I was reading in a previous post about the studies in JAP of the detraining effect. If I remember correctly, it went something like “IIB fibers started at 16%, decreased to 9%, and after retraining increased to 24% before stabilizing at 12%.” Did I read that right? Was the overall effect of detraining an actual decrease in the percentage fo type IIB fibers? Help me out here people, why would we be after that? Drew, Kelly Bagget, I believe you guys had the most input on this thread. Any thoughts?
Look up a previous post by me called “periodization rip up plan”.Theres a lot of reasons why getting out of the gym is a good idea, and i believe i listed some in my previous post, but since then i have expanded my knowledge, and stand by my “detraining” phylosophy.
You’re mostly correct…however it was after “detraining” that the IIB fibers increased to 24%. Sedentary people have IIB fibers, most athletes don’t. As soon as they are recruited they tend to diminish into slow performing fibers. All of this gives credence to tapering and incoporating off weeks and low volume training prior to performances in strength/power/speed oriented sports.
