Carlos, what mental cues do you use when you’re squatting?

Haha, one of my friends is an aspiring writer and huge Lovecraft fan. He always says Cthulhu is going to haunt Metallica’s dreams for misspelling his name.
Also I’ve recently been doing more squat and deadlift beltless in response to what I’ve seen in your log for quite a while. Have you noticed anything in particular as a result of implementing so much beltless training?

Stronger abs. Since I don’t have a power belly, I have to get in as much ab training, directly and indirectly as much as possible. I don’t have the benefit of a gut for added stability, so I have make that up by training my abs every time I train. Once I peak and put the belt again, I get more out of it than I would otherwise if I relied on using a belt all the time.

Just sounds like you need to drink more beer to me.

I had the pleasure to train with T-Nation author Ben Bruno today. I can’t speak enough of awesome a guy he is, and he’s pretty damn strong, and definitely convinced me to do some single leg work and some other good stuff for assistance work in the near future. An eye opener for sure.
-
Deadlift, Beltless
465x5
525x3
585x1 -
Olympic Squat, beltless
315 5x10

I did a few sets of 5 and a couple sets of negatives. This are legit hamstring work. My hamstrings were cramping by the end. Absolutely brutal and I’m definitely adding this into my training.
-
Dead Squat Bar, Single leg variations - worked up to 275x5 each leg. I don’t think Bruno has posted a video of this yet, but he also had a Dead Squat Bar from T-Nation and this thing is a monster. I like the knurling a lot, reminds of me of a Texas bar. Pretty cool. This also tore up my hamstrings. I had some grip issues, but definitely like this a lot as well.
-
Ab Wheel - 5x8-12 nothing fancy here although after all that single leg work, definitely a lot harder to brace my core when I was doing these.
All in all, a pretty good training session, and I can’t wait to head back up there again for some good training.
Offseason: Week 3, Day 3
- Overhead Press
170x5
190x3
210x1
- Bench Press
225lbs 5x10
- Pull Ups - 5x8
- DB Curls 3x10
Band Pushdowns 3xamrap
Facepulls 3xamrap
My Overhead Press felt pretty awesome today; no rep was a grind nor were any of them slow. I’m excited to see where my Press is at come the end of the summer.
The 5x10 volume is finally catching up to me. My pecs were getting fatigued towards the last couple of sets. I felt like they were going to give out. I’m glad I get a deload next week, but the 5x10 is only going to get heavier from here on out.
You should join us over in the “Quest for a 315 Strict OHP” thread.
how much rest do you have between the 5x10 bench sets?
do rest times change for exercises or is it all the same - eg 2 minutes per set of bench but 2 and a half for squats
Congratulations to my client, Drug Free Bodybuilder Evan Piercey for not only going to his first Powerlifting Meet, but also totaling Elite at 220lbs with a 1555 total. His starting numbers during our prep was a 515 Squat, 315 Bench, and 625 Deadlift, and yesterday it was a 550 Squat (35lbs up) , 340 Bench (25lbs up), and a 665 Deadlift (40lbs up)
I believe he use to post, or still posts on T-Nation as ebomb55

Well I superset the work, so whenever I do a set of presses, I’ll head straight for the pull up bar. As for the Deads and Squats, I’m supersetting my Ab work.
My rest periods are about 2min for upper body and 3min for lower body.
