Deadlifting

I was reading here quite a bit yesterday ( pretty sweet site, I learned more yesterday about this stuff than i ever knew in my life) and the articles were saying not to pull u’r shoulders back i’m just wondering y…to me it kinda seems like that would be danderious and do u guys use belts when u do deadlifts all the time or just on heavy lifts

I’ve used a belt on and off in the past when training with heavy weights (1-2 rep maxes). But I stopped using the belt a while ago, and even when I lift heavy now, I don’t use it.

However, if I was competing in a powerlifting contest or thought I needed my belt for deads or squats when attempting a 1RM, I would consider using it.

Deadlifts aren’t dangerous unless you use horrible form or already have some injuries or other problems that could be aggravated by them.

The why: to lessen the range of motion on the lift and thus lift more weight.

It’s not dangerous to start with your scapulae in a protracted position as long as your upper spine stays neutral. The muscles about the scapulae are just in a stretched position, not in an abnormal position, and they do get pulled back at lockout.

Keep in mind this is the form used for strength athletics (usually)- for general bodybuilding purposes it’s just fine to start with the shoulders pulled back, since you’d be worried about delivering stress and making the muscles work hard rather than the absolute weight lifted.

thanks … i tryed deadlifting tonight with my shoulders a little looser and it felt pretty good…about the belt… in one of the articls i read where it was saying to push u’r guts into u’r belt when deadlifting and squating well what do u do when u don’t have one on??.. i tend to pull in and stay tight… is that right? sorry for the stupid questions but i train at home and there is no one around here that does any kind of powerlifting so there is no one else to ask

Don’t worry about pulling your abs in or doing any other sort of crazy ab contractions. Your abs and core will stablize itself properly on its own. When you are about to deadlift, take a deep breath in (this automatically forces the abs and lower back to contract properly), begin lifting and exhale at the top of the lift. No fancy ab movements needed.

alright…thanks bud
