Deadlift, Steak, Beer, Sleep, Repeat

Hey BD,

Yeah, apart from a few, their where some very experienced knowledgeable guys on the old site, such as both Ray and Al above.

By all means be honest, what would be your take on HIT? Is it something youve every tried?

A good weeks training, last workout was on thursday nught, did some log pressing and framers frame deadlift hold.

Kinda spoke too soon about my back, ive had a bit of flair up of sorts, ive coccydynia (inflammation of the muscles and ligaments surrounding the coccyx). So its anti bloody inflammatory pills, fecken pain killers and rest for the next week or so…cause that’ll happen…not. ill just take it easier.

Yes… back a long long time ago . Got one of Dr Ds books along with Mike Mentzers around the time Dorian was making a splash.

It has its merits.
But with all systems and methods it has its pros and cons. I do stress all…

I will address my own opinion over in my log here soon .

Completely agree BD. Ive drawn inspiration from others, but ive never been one for following the systems or routines of others to the letter. I like to train instinctively and with zero discipline.

I agree with the importants of recovery .
The need for a specific level of intensity
Not overdoing volume.

But not at the levels prescribed by the truly indoctrinated I see.

Yeah, Mike regularly give examples of Arnolds 4hrs a day, 6 days week “marathon” workouts, but by HD book2 he was advocating the opposite extreme, training once every 4-7 days with 3-5 set workouts, with 2-3 layoffs every time you hit a stumbling block.

Mike stated a long time ago that anything you can do to make an exercise harder was a step in the right direction. Imo thats true, but up until a point, many took that as a license to train with maximum intensity every workout with ever longer recovery periods required. Soon those same people would be complaining about deconditioning.
The same people also claimed they had become much stronger but not bigger, no wonder, there was too mucn intensity and not enough volume or training frequency. Admittedly i would include myself in that…but we live and learn.

One of the big flaws in the approach deals with beginners. Most dont have the ability to fully recruit muscle fibers effectively for a single set to be optimal imo. Along with that most dont need the overly extended recovery period . I think it a more viable option for your more seasoned lifter.

That’s very true, and that’s how the likes of Yates and Mentzer start out themselves, training 3-4 days per week, with multiple sets. Viator, Coe Olivia all the same.

Heavy day today…

  1. Rack pulls
Worked up to 900lb beltless then 1000lb with a belt. Both with a 5 second hold at the top.

  2. Farmers walks
    20metres with 280lb
    20metres with 370lb
4x20metres with 455lb no belt or straps

  3. Deadlift hold with farmers frame
455lb x 52 second hold, no belt or straps, grip was fatigued from the farmers.

  4. 3x500metre sprints on the concept 2 rower

Tired but feel good. Mobility work and brisk walk tomorrow, then a 70% day on Wednesday as a primer for another heavy day on Thursday.

Yeah… and hell its common knowledge Yates used multiple sets while implementing a high intensity approach.

Even holding 1,000 lbs is a feat in itself. Great work, Rob. Just be careful with the back.
Nice to read you’re doing plenty of cardio too.
Oh yeah, Wesley Clayborn has withdrawn from WSM. Another C-19 fail! It’s not looking good for the competition.
Nearly forgot, isn’t there a big deadlift only competition taking place soon in Belfast? Got your eyes on it?

Hey Hel,

Thanks mate, am 2" smaller now lol. Im hoping next year to do a deadlift contest, but it’ll be open to all ages, equipped, and no drug testing. Might look for a raw over 40s drug tested contest. Though it’s fun beating the big mouth whipper snappers Haha.

Hey Ray,

Thanks mate, think I’ve another 100-150lb in the tank, next time I’ll load up with the thinner calibrated plates (when Phil’s not looking lol). Yeah, I’ll get 2-3 short HIIT sessions and more loaded Carries in each week, does no harm.

Yeah, I just missed getting my name put down for a DL contest next month, but hopefully next year I’ll get find something…

Jes, another one out, that’s very convenient. I wonder will the Shaw classic still go ahead?

How’d your deads go today?

I can’t even imagine holding that much weight…

Granted, there are a couple freaks of nature that have pulled that from the floor. But I have my doubts that they are even human…

Hi Rob,
Again, phenomenal lift. I know you’ve had back issues recently but, despite the deadlift weight, I hope all’s going well?
My deads are starting anew. Got to an easy 247kg before the two weeks of digging a trench kicked in. Could barely sit on sofa or lie in bed without back pain. Managed 230kg, which wasn’t bad in truth as I’d gone nearly 3 weeks with no deadlifting and the back was messed. Did an easy 227kg with 6 sets of 3 a couple of days ago. Barely felt it. I think I’ll be back to 247kg in 2 weeks and am expecting to hit 255 or 260kg in my PR attempt. 600lbs might not happen this year but I’m getting close.
Re WSM: a friggin’ hurricane is hitting Florida now! What else can go wrong? Hoping for a Luke Stoltman win. Tricky heat with Shaw, though.

Ray
