Deadlift Pain

I have recently started deadlifting again. Last night when I got into heavier weight (heavier for me) I started having a pain in the middle of my upper back. It made me put down the weight which was frustrating as I had many more repds left and strength wise could have lifted much more.

I thought my back was straight and I was using good form but perhaps my back was more rounded than I realized and this caused the pain. Anyone experience this before?

Please don’t take my comments as any sort of diagnosis, but shit like this happens (to me) all the time. It could be that I haven’t warmed up properly or that my form isn’t quite right, or that I haven’t fully recovered from the previous session.

Whatever the reason, experience has taught me that when the pain is serious, I know it. So these niggling little bastards that muck up my sessions, I LISTEN to them. I’ll lower the weight and try again, change the exercise so I don’t antagonise the pain, or change the routine to another part of the body.

My advice, apart from see a Doc if you feel it’s more serious, is to listen to your body. If you ignore it, it may bite you in the arse.

Thanks, Duke.

The only time I experience this type of pain is when my form is less than ideal. When deadlifting there is so much at stake- you can’t afford to cheat form on this lift. If you are in pain, it is probably because you aren’t doing it quite right. Love your back and make sure you have the form plusgood.
