Deadlift Form

I have been deadlifting for over a year now and until recently everything was going well, weights increasing progressively every couple of weeks. Until i hit a bit of a rut, i managed to work through this but i feel my form has taken on a negative impact.

Essentially i feel like im squatting the weight. When i go down and grab the bar i concentrate so much on keeping my lower back flat that im lifting my head up really high. So when i go to pull the weight its as if my my hips are hardly moving forward at all. My legs are lifting the weight directly upwards.

It seems really stupid but i taught my training partner how to deadlift and helped him with his for. It looks so much better than mine, which is why i cant work out why my own advice i would give to him just isnt working for me.

I have read a few articles on here about deadlifting and most say not to squat the weight, i have dropped back down to the weight i was at when i got stuck in the “rut”.But i still feel im just squatting it. Can anyone give me some tips? maybe had a similar experience… i know its going to be just a few words that will make it click in my mind again. I just hate knowing my form sucks.

Do you have particularly long arms? If so take a look at the ‘deadlifting with long arms’ thread in the ‘strength sports’ section.

One article that really helped me was ‘The Dead Zone’ by Dave Tate:

I don’t know if you’ll have read it yet, if not you really should.

Other than that, try posting a video on here of your form to see if any of us can give you any pointers.

Also, what are your stats: PR, height, weight, years training etc?

As long as the weight starts on the floor, you are standing fully locked out at finish, and you don’t excessively round your back you are fine.

More lifting, less thinking.

deadift however you fee strongest

article goes thru how to perform a deadlift.

You also can check out Deadlift Diagnosis, if you have a particular point in the deadlift in which you are weak.

I had issues in the past with squating the weight but these 2 articles, as well as the Dead Zone article listed above helped to get my form set correctly.
