Anyone else watch the fight last night. Great fight, great performance by De la Hoya. For anyone who missed it and cares, De la Hoya boxed Vargas for 10 rounds and then put him away in the 11th. I think Vargas has got a good future, but he needed to be put in his place last night.
Magnus: first thing this morning, I went right onto Fightnews, since we didn’t watch the fight. Oh my! I am now a De La Hoya BIG fan! Best condition I have ever seen him in, amazing! I also read the round by round report on ESPN. HBO is going to show this fight again on Saturday, the 21st. We’re getting it taped (since we have to go to a BB contest that night…). Can’t wait to actually sit down and watch it.
good show, i was so happy to see De la Hoya punch the snot out of Vargas it made me a little worried about my frame of mind.
by the way, i think vargas is a arrogant little wanker, hopefully this will teach him some humility
Vargas is a punk, and I’m gald De la Hoya gave him a beating. There is a beautiful photo on fight news Oscar landing a left hook right to Vargas’ jaw. I am going to try to catch the replay this weekend.
saw the fight, Vargas may have had a better chance if he would have rushed in on Oscar and got him on the ropes more and used his power.
What a great fight, my wife and I were in Vegas but had to watch on closed circuit. $5000 for ring side and $500 in the nose bleed section, no thank you. De La Hoya is a true champion and a great person. We thought both fighters had a great fight. One fighter would win a round then the other would come back and win the next. We even cheered Vargas at the end of the fight for a great performance. However, at the end of the fight this “trash talking PUNK” didn’t even congratulate De La Hoya, no post fight interview and no class at all.
I would have loved to see a De La Hoya-Vargas II but after this I hope Trinidad comes out of retirement and we can see another De La Hoya-Trinidad fight.
Definately tape and watch the replay if you can. I’ve always enoyed watching De la Hoya, buy was never a fan. I definately have new respect for him now however. He fought a smart fight against a much stronger opponent. He beat him with speed, skill and conditioning and then finished him off with pure power. It looked like he was in trouble early on, but he showed some huge stones and stuck to his game plan.
That was fight of the fucking year. Oscar is no joke. Vargas was so humiliated he wouldn’t even do a post fight interview. I lost all respect for him.
De la Hoya lost many peoples respect after he lost to Trinidad (a fight that he should have won), but I have alway admired his skill in the ring. He is a great combinaion of puncher and boxer.
What you said about the fight: speed, skill, conditioning and the fact that he fought a “smart fight” is why I want to watch it. And keep it on tape. Sounds like a good fight to use for training purposes.
What's so amazing is that Vargas was actually winning the earlier rounds - what, up to the fourth round? And his camp was yelling out how De La Hoya was finished. Uh huh. De La Hoya proved what the heart of a true champion is. I NEVER thought I would say that about him, too. NOW I'm a believer. For sure.
Combination puncher with a GREAT left hook. Ko and Patricia you would have loved the change in the audience towards De La Hoya after the middle rounds. At the start they were booing De La Hoya ??
Also lets not forget De La Hoya is a “natural” 135 lb fighter taken on fighters 20 heavier. Not many fighter can do this, power punch with speed in heavier classes (well maybe Roy Jones Jr.)
Ya, I definately thought De la Hoya was the better fighter in the Trinidad fight. If he had put the pressure on in the last couple of rounds instead of just displaying superior boxing skills, he probably would have won. He did’nt make that mistake in this fight. He out boxed Vargas in the earlier rounds and then started throwing the hard combinations and that killer left hook in the later rounds. I would like to see De la Hoya get a chance to redeem himself against Trinidad. Actually I felt he should have won that fight anyway. IMO, there was no question he was the better boxer.
I would love to see “De la Hoya-Trinidad 2”, but don’t think it will happen. Trinidad lost the first fight and knows it so i imagine he will stay “retired”. If Oscar had taken it to him, he would have gone down. I wouldn’t mind seeing a Hopkins/De la Hoya fight, but I think Hopkins/Roy Jones might happen. Oh well, up next Ward /Gatti 2
