Most SSBs are heavier than 45, with 65 being pretty typical, but an overbuilt one might be heavier. Is there a brand name on this one?

Sadly no brand name. I’m assuming the lettering on pad wore out. It was stout tho. I can curl an empty barbell easy, but this was a bit more effort to go from curl to raise elbow to shoulder level.

Makes me feel much better about the weight I moved ;). Sometimes it’s hard to gauge improvement when you haven’t done traditional barbell movements. I just hit 400lbs on the belt squat but no framework for how it relates to a barbell.

Along with that, the SSB is literally always trying to kill you the entire time you are squatting with it, haha. It’s absolutely brutal.

  • Felt really good on bench. I’m slowing increasing height of bench, this angle is basically a strongman OH Press, where you lean back a bit.

Sunday Open Mat

  • Had some good rolls, did a few 10 minute rounds
  • Rolled with a white belt for first time. Plan was to let him pass guard and get dominant position. I rolled to recover guard and he jumped to take my back and quickly got a RNC locked in. F me if I’m going to let a white belt tap me out the first time we roll. Got free and then promptly got him in my favorite position - S Mount with multiple subs happening at once. Got him wtih a straight arm-arm bar
  • I went with him a few more times, including a 10 minute roll. He never got close again, worked mount defense, retaining guard and side control escapes
  • Throughout all my rolls, I was letting my hips get passed and working rolling into K guard. I haven’t done this before and it worked nearly every time. Advanced it to a purple belt with luck and a black belt. Both times gave me great leg entries for knee bar and toe hold
  • I started developing an attack where my guard is being passed from knee shield. I let them push the shield out, while simultaneously pushing their near shoulder to mat. I then put my knee shield leg over them and end up with a back take. I did it to the black belt and he wasn’t too happy under estimating flexibility. He rolled out of it, but I think I expanded two pretty good options for when guard is being passed.

Went to my old morning class. New Schedule allows me to go every other week. Great class, was able to notice huge improvements since last time rolling with these guys. Ended 40 minutes of sparring with a six minute birthday shark tank. Every time I went from bad position (usually back control) to an offensive position, they tapped out and someone new grabbed my back. My body is destroyed right now. It was a blast tho, I hit that K Guard sweep three times in a row to start of the shark tank. My last round my professor came in and took my back, without hooks. I was able to shake him and scramble to side control. He weighs about 130-140lbs and I smashed him with everything I had, before someone came and tapped him out. That’s the closest I’ll get for a long time so had to take advantage.

One of my buddies went for a baseball bat choke, I pulled his hands in and tucked my head hard, right has he was going to twist his elbows. Instead of torquing on my neck, he got my nose between his wrists. My nose popped about 3-4 times and broke whatever cartilage hadn’t been broken yet. The tip of my nose is black and blue.

Took wed off and had planned on training Thursday, but wasn’t in cards last minute with kid stuff. So took Thursday off as well.

Spontaneous open mat with a really solid group. Had 2 black belts, 2 brown, 4 purple, 2 blue and 2 white. I got 8 rounds in. Highlight was not being submitted once.

Found this. Less than a year went from lifetime PR to 5 reps on a random second workout after doing 3 max rep sets.

Went to open mat.

  • Rolled with a good white belt and black belt in judo to kick it off. Started off with a butterfly sweep, took side control and subbed with a shotgun armbar, whereby getting in reverse kesa and putting my leg on far side of head, with their arm trapped across my thigh. Then let him pass guard and worked rolling out of it. Let him pass again to quarter guard and worked a butterfly sweep when he has cross face and undertook
  • New kid from main comp school was here. Never seen him before so let him work a bit. He was clearly a wrestler with double unders and over/under passing. He couldn’t pass my guard and was breathing hard. Time expired and I asked if he wanted to keep going. I egged him on and said I wasn’t tired. (He is probably 23-25). After a minute or two of feeling him out, I did the same sweep as mentioned above. Got his arm pinned and hit a mounted Americana.
  • then rolled with a purple belt who’s always a good roll. He’s about 6’0 and solid. Weighs 240 to my 236. Bastard has started playing my leg lock game from bottom half. I got a high step pass, took knee on belly before he shucked me and rolled into close guard. We then just laughed and messed around.
  • spent another few rounds doing positional defense with him. He took my back and I tried to escape then same for him.
  • there were a few more rounds, but more or less let white belts get me in bad spots and worked out of them

  • first time doing these in long time. Shoulders didn’t hurt at all. Triceps and tendons in elbow were a bit achy, but not a big deal

BJJ Class

  • didn’t make it to morning class, so went to night. This class used to be nogi, but is apparently fundamentals now
  • Fundamentals coach didn’t show up, so main professor ran it. I convinced him to do nogi
  • I was only colored belt, but just focused on hitting certain things
  • Had two 10 minute rounds and a 20 minute round
  • Focused on hitting sumo gaeshi and butterfly from 1/2 smash
  • Everything I did was getting the sweep or going to side scissor position (my chest on their side, with legs clamped on their back/chest)
  • Did a much better job of controlling arms. Using my whole body to isolate for gift wrap and/or extending arms. Key was locking wrists and elbows, filling space with my head/chest and giving them the dilemma of protecting arms or neck
  • For the 20 minute round, had a few jump in when opponent got tired. Let them take side control, mount, back as starting point and just worked out of it

  • Motivation for workouts has been low this week
  • Lot happening right now, trying to figure out next steps for life. Big things coming
  • Haven’t made much recent progress on weight loss. It’s fine… Last few weeks have been great workouts, but lot happening and eating hasn’t been amazing. I had a birthday and then my daughter so that contributed. Had a couple drinks (5 in last 2 weeks) that has made me feel kinda crappy. Can’t have a finger of bourbon and not feel shitty for a day after anymore
  • I got blood work back and all things were good, but estrogen was quite high. Makes sense why acne has creeped in really bad. I’ve been at 160mg each week and Test was around 780, but E was 64. Taking .125mg of anastrozole to lower, then might take it once every 7 days and retest
