Tuesday

First day back to jiu jitsu. I made a huge mistake today, while rolling with my professor. Started out seated to him standing. Entered shin on shin and sit up guard, then rolled into single X. Swept him down and he started inverting to take my back. I reversed it and took his. Then stretched his arms over his head and subbed him with lapel choke less than 1.5 minutes in. From there, we both just messed around to finish round. I then moved to a big purple belt for a hard 5. Afterwards he put me in center of mat. Turned a loud song on and set time for 7 minute shark tank. Every time I got an advantage or subbed someone tapped in. Most brutal seven minutes ever. Lesson learned, don’t sub your professor.

Been really really bad. Haven’t trained since last tuesday. Just been super busy with getting house ready to be listed and finishing up at my last job. Fortunately, home is now listed and I’m in between jobs.. new one officially starts tomorrow.

Tuesday Morning class

  • Had solid rounds. Did a really good job of pressure passing from tripod and butterfly sweeping. I feel very confident in these two, as was able to hit on 3 purple belts.
  • Went against another blue belt who is my size. I had never seen him before. I just waited patiently while he tried to pass my half guard, before butterfly sweeping, then clamping down in side scissor, threatening armbar, before taking lapel and finishing the choke.
  • Rolled with him again and threatened that butterfly sweep, he posted with his leg, so I grabbed onto his arm and hit my first realy Choi bar (not on a white belt). Was a great setup for it faking what I had just successfully hit.
  • Immediately rolled with a purple belt I train with a lot. It’s become my move to cycle through leg entry, underhook to back, choi, overhead sweep, butterfly, etc. from half until one o them works. Hit the butterfly, he started to come up, I took side scissor and finished him with lapel choke again.

I’m 100% WFH until I move in a few weeks, so should be able to get garage sessions in each day. Weight has been as low as 226, which is good. Diet has been solid, with exception of two Dos Equis one night.

  • Trying to stay consistent, but lots happening with preparing to move on May 1
  • Will be going to an open mat today (Friday). Will be last time I see a bunch of the guys
  • Keeping diet tight. The 5/6th abs are starting to be more visible. With so much happening, I really need to keep diet perfect. Might need to start throwing KB and med balls around just to get quick work in.
  • My general goal every day is drinking protein shakes when hungry and only eat a breakfast/lunch if it’s part of a meal with friends/family. Otherwise, I don’t want to eat too many calories early in day, then get caught with a big meal at night with friends saying goodbye. Ex was yesterday. I had a ribeye and rice for lunch, then got caught last minute with dinner with friends and ate more than I wanted. I want to keep protein high, then if nothing happens at night, make myself something that will be satisfying and keep me under on calories.

Friday

Spontaneous self organized daddy day care at jiu jitsu. Had a good group of guys, 1 brown belt, 5 purple, myself and a white belt and all our kids. Set up some cones for kids to play on mats, ordered pizzas, snacks for kids and we all rolled for 2 Horus.

  • Definitely felt great today. Didn’t give up any subs and got quite a few myself. Most of my subs coming from that side position. It’s getting well refined. I get there hit the lapel choke, arm bar or take the back and roll through. Alternatively, I told myself I wanted to start hitting ankle locks. I got 2 of them. Normally, I’ll enter leg entanglements and use the position to pass guard.
  • I also started working a high step pass, which open a lot of doors against the BTT brown belt. Normally he does Adam Ward shit to me and sweeps me from half. High stepping until I could advance to a pressure pass allowed me to actually pass his guard once and other time enter SX, where I locked in a straight ankle lock.

Overall great rounds. Will try to hit back or legs this evening.

Forgot WNO was on last night, so no additional workout. Got baby to sleep and went into our media room for first time since living in home and watched it. Definitely should have used this space sooner.

Quick thoughts: Over the weekend had a bunch of guys out a friends property, as a going away thing for me. It’s going to be to so hard to leave these group of guys. There’s about 7 of us who train together consistently and go to Origin together. I’ve mentioned I hate stripes in the past, but they coordinated getting my belt there and had one of the black belts show up late and surprise me with two stripes on my belt. Meant a lot to have them think about me and honored in that way.

Tuesday:

  • Went to morning class. We worked on my favorite topic, points of leverage for rolling. Specifically, moving from tailbone to shoulders and working on using natural leverage to our advantage.
  • Had some great rolls. I’ve found that side-scissor/clamp position to be my game. Getting there is easy, and then I own them for sweeps and subs.
  • Right groin is pretty tender. It’s sore from opponents trying to pin it to the ground, while passing. Need to let it heal before I do squats. I tried a few days ago, but was painful on descent. I might try and do leg ext and lunges, as that doesn’t seem to impact it.

Been hit or miss as expected. Got in a chest workout today, then went to my last class at gym. Was pretty dominant on mat today. Started on back in half guard, got my sweeps, then finished opponents in Mount or back control. Was working Ezekiels today. There’s a cool one I’ve wanted to hit with underhook lapel grip, from back control. It’s normally non threatening, as undertook prevents the full choke, but taking the far arm and grabbing sleeve completes the choke.

Thanks for checking in. Pretty good, pretty nuts. Flew to the state we are moving to with family, got them settled in an Airbnb, then flew back to TX to pack up our stuff and drive it. I’m on day 2-3 for the roadtrip. Been a wild ride, getting family settled, while working remotely, while navigating inspections on new home and showings/cleanings/etc on old home. We close on new place at end of month and hope to have offers soon on our home in TX.

I’ve gotten a few workouts in and a few rounds on the mat. I took a 60lb KB with me on roadtrip. Every 125 miles or so, I get a series of swings, squats, snatches, rows and OHP in. I’ll be in new state tomorrow night and settling over weekend, before going into office at new job on monday. Then in two weeks, move into new home. Then, fly back to TX to get remaining items from storage unit and drive 3 days again.

Man.. it’s been hard to train. I did get into 3 bjj classes this week. I’m officially training only nogi now.. Made three lunch time classes. Monday got 3 decent rounds in. Opponents were ok. I need to improve on pins in nogi, I didn’t train it often before so grips are a weakness. Wednesday was just me and coach, so worked two saddle entries. One from butterfly and other from X. Then today, Friday, got two good rounds in, but much smaller opponents.

  • First guy I did my favorite takedown, but modified for nogi, whereby, I isolate an arm grab their lat and sit back and kick them over. Him being much smaller was able to get his leg in and stretched me out with X Guard, but being able to the splits, I could stretch further and faster than he could. I was able to wrap my stretched leg behind his head, then remove back leg and lock in a triangle from mount. Him being small, it was hard to make tight, even with leg locked out. I stretched his arm out, after trying Americana, but finished him with a fish hook wrist lock (Fuck the trial guy, haha).
  • Second round was with coach and brown belt. We rolled hard. Lots of sweeps and inversions by both of us. Ended in a stalemate.

I haven’t had anytime in weight room or doing any movements. My stuff is in storage unit, while in an airbnb until we close, and I couldn’t make it to a gym. I’m debating getting a membership at a commercial gym to train T and TR at lunch. Then do more functional/atletic movements on Fr-Su. I’m going to live on a steep private hill. So, carries, yokes and sprints will be super easy to do…eh, they’ll be super accessible.

One thing that sucks here is that elevation is above 4,000’. I’m in good shape, but my lungs burn trying to find the oxygen.

Lil update. Haven’t trained since Friday. I get keys to new place friday night. In the meantime, I’m just navigating office life and surviving in our airbnb. It’s nice enough, but small for us. I sleep on a couch every night, as there are not enough rooms.

Diet has been absolute shit. Food tastes good, but I’m eating pizza, nachos, tacos, etc. and a couple beers each day. Looking forward to next week, when routine can start again.

We did get a good 2-3 mile hike in on Saturday, which I did fasted. Then, we met some friends at a food truck park. I drank 4-5 drinks over course of 3 hours, while kids played.

Wednesday,

Got into a midday class. Just me and coach again. Since I’m training exclusively in nogi, dynamics are a bit different:

  • I’m not great at pinning, when I can’t use grips. Really focusing on pressing into opponent from side control, for instance. Taking more of a wrestlers stance, far leg up by their head, bottom leg out, hip blocking their knee in and on my toes.
  • My inner thighs are incredibly sore, as I’m using them to clamp far more
  • I’ve always done far more chokes than joint locks. Nogi changes the scenario a bit, spending more time working on arm bar setups and kimuras
  • My passing is getting much better, as well as scrambling to top position
  • I feel 100% confident in ability to tie up arm, sit back and kick opponent over, when starting from standing

Better few days nutritionally. Just need to keep it up. Really really need my clear to close tomorrow, so I can close friday. Getting nervous.

Last Friday we ended up getting keys and closing. Spent Friday and Saturday moving in. Then Sunday/Monday I was in all day board meeting, for a board I’m on. Tuesday/Wednesday had to travel for work. So, finally back at home.

As previously mentioned, I live on a huge hill that’s quite steep. my property is fairly flat, where the house and yard are, but the driveway and 1.5 acres of property is steep hill. I also have a trail on back of property that takes to top of hill ('m about halfway up). On Monday and today (Thursday), I got a quick early morning (530am) walk to bottom and back up. On Monday, I had 40lb vest and 20lb DB in each hand. Today, I did it with a 60lb KB in each hand.

I also joined a gym pass system through my health insurance. So, I now have access to real gyms. Going to try and sneak away at lunch hour.

Just went to the local Athletic Club, which is part of the ‘One Pass’ health benefits I have. It’s the most grungy metal building gym I have ever been to. All the free weights you could want, hammer strength and then separate machine area for elderly. They have every specialty bar, turf for sleds, hex bar, camber bar, Swiss, etc. Even have the Rogue belt squat and reverse hyper. Pretty stoked, because I get access as part of my $35/month health benefit. Beauty is I can go to 10 or so gyms in my area too or any gym in network while traveling.

Saturday - Spent day unpacking boxes. Finally able to see kitchen, living room and garage #1.

Sunday - Similar to Saturday. Put kids beds together, knocked out garage #2, which happens to be my gym/tools. Gym is set up nicely, need to work out the kinks in my ice bath. Leaked quite a bit over night. My sauna arrives today too, pretty stoked to be all setup soon.

Going to go to BJJ today. I’m debating switching gyms depending on how this week goes. I need better training partners. I’ve been waking up every day around 450-5a. I can easily make the 30 minute drive to the best and largest school in area, for a 615 class. Winter might be a bit sketchy, when it snows.

Last night we had some friends over for dinner. We all had a few drinks and was getting egged on my friends and their son, who just graduated and was headed to military shortly. He won 4th at state wrestling this past year. I played it slow, trying for some outside trips, but got him with the smoothest Uchi Mata I’ve ever hit. Then got him with a half guard butterfly/balloon sweep to arm bar and finally was playing half butterfly and hit a choi. lmao. Mostly playing around, but he didn’t know what to do with jits.
