Dani's Rebel Log

(That’s because I’m confident my lack of green skills means I could kill it within a few weeks, not because I’m going to get one to pass to my kids, we’ve got a tortoise for that already).

Wait. You have a tortoise?!

Yup, Herman (he’s a Hermann’s tortoise, original I know).

I had one years ago that died quickly after following the directions that everyone says you must follow.

But this one is thriving and my plant care is based on “vibes” alone. I put it where it would look pretty, and water just whenever.

So, blanket advice for most plants: just put it in a well lit place, err on the side of under-watering rather than over-watering, and never get a peace lily because they’re full of lies and chaos. Not peace.

It would be illegal to own that pet down here, surprised you can still have them as pets in the UK

They come with documentation to prove they’ve been bred in captivity not removed from the wild, but yup still legal over here. Had him best part of a decade - my wife’s choice of pet, she’s always loved them, not entirely sure it’s fair on the kids, but too late now .

I have always wanted a tortoise. But my wife likes cats. I hear cats like to gnaw on their feet. Bastards. Someday. At my age I would like a pet that might outlive me. I am getting too sentimental when it comes to having to take my Shepherds for that last ride to the vet.

Seems pretty tough to think about too though. What if he misses you or wonders why you abandoned him when you pass? Maybe that’s just a thing mammals do though.

Understandable. :smiling_face_with_tear:

Not Quite Lower Body But Sort Of

Made this more of a multi-muscle thing with a little metcon at the beginning. Working around this hamstring limits a lot of exercise options, but I still want to feel challenged with more than just isolation work.

4 rounds, 3 minutes per round:

  • Loaded Carry: out and back about 25 yards
  • Push-Up: 10 perfect, full ROM reps
  • Walking Lunge: 25 yards, walk back

This left me with about 20-30 seconds of rest between rounds. I only used 105 pounds on the loaded carry, not knowing how much fatigue would accumulate between rounds. Carrying my bodyweight will be doable with a shorter distance.

  • Staggered Stance Hip Thrust

If you need to go lighter for any reason (like not recruiting the hamstring too much), emphasizing one glute at a time with the staggered stance is powerful.

  • Leg Extension Drop Set

Went to failure, dropped down a plate, did about 4-5 more reps per set.

Tanning booth: 4 minutes

Other Stuff

I have a new child:

Alocasia Polly: 6 inch diameter, 10 perfect leaves, and 2 new ones that are just barely unraveling.

I have a wishlist of plants. This wasn’t on that list, but it was too cute to pass up.

That looks way lower maintenance than my plant.

Yours sings. So, totally worth the extra work.

Not only did my plant grow up big and strong, but it encouraged my interest in dentistry. So there is that.

Light Stuff and Heavy Stuff

Plant cutting presents:

There are knives and there are guns… but there are also knife-guns.

Actually, the pointy part is called a bayonet. I’m not even sure what gun this is. My friend Will has a lot of crazy toys like this, and he lets me hold them. And by “lets me” I mean he insists I hold them.

My wife does these too, we always seem to have jars full of cuttings placed around our house.

Nice gift, you are a lovely and generous person.

I love this! Your wife and I would totally be friends.

Christmas gift-giving gives me a bit of anxiety. There’s an expectation for adults to give presents to other adults when we all could have just saved our money and bought ourselves whatever we wanted… or nothing at all.

But plants fix all that weirdness. It’s a living thing. It’s nature. It’s art. It’s healthy. It’s beautiful. And if it comes from your home, it has meaning and memories. It was grown and nurtured by the person giving it away. So, yeah, big fan of that.

You are! :hugs:

I did some of these with basil when I had some left over while cooking. It keeps it fresh then makes more instead of drying or wasting! I also have some mint going from a big patch me & kiddo found. He said “Will it do like the basil?” I responded “we’ll find out!”.

That’s really smart!

It’s like a science experiment! One fun fact I’ve heard about mint is that it’s such a hearty grower, that in gardens, it’ll dominate and choke out the other plants. So I’m betting you’ll have success growing it.

MINT SMASH!

I buy my parents Hillshire Farms meat and cheese gift boxes every year. They are in want of nothing. (Except better health…) Occasionally I mix it up with gift cards to P.F. Changs or In n Out Burger. But I am always at a loss when trying to find something meaningful for them.
