I think everybody has a rythm or operating speed. Whether its to the moment, day, or week. When they hit their rythm, actions becomes fluid.
Mine has always been quick, moment to moment, and I get bogged down and overwhelmed on long projects. Even when cycling I’d keep a high cadence and felt best at that pace, completely opposite to my old riding buddy. Same speed, completely different gears and pedaling rate.
Other people have their daily rythm, wake up, lift, hygene, work, etc.
Weekly- same, just longer, and either everything crammed into friday, or friday is the wind down leave early day.
It can be hard to figure out what your rythm is though, and it does change, and gets disrupted.
Matt and I used to play a game where we would try to check off a task off the other’s list without them noticing. So I would do something like sear the short ribs and when he would come out of the walk-in wondering where they went I look at him and he laughed saying “Son of a bitch,” then I’d discover all my all my salad prep had been done. He’d smirk at me and I’d insult him back.
Some staff members complained that we were always goofing off, but they didn’t understand we were kindred spirits trying to maxamize efficency.
I have a theory that you can divide people into three different categories based on what motivates them, and it applies to the gym, work, recreation - but each has a shadow function.
Maintainers - They want a clear to-do list, then be done. If there is not a clear goal that is spelled out, they quit.
Organizers - They like to move things around, so coming into a new established idea or situation motivates them to get busy. But if they have to go into maintainer mode, they start creating chaos to give them something to do.
Catalyst - The person who thrives on newness and always is creating something. They are willing to dip out for the next new thing.
As a chronic procrastinator holding myself back with silly distractions, I’m still trying to figure out what my jam is. I feel I am easily motivated and despite not being inherently lazy or anything, I just have terrible productivity (in comparison to how it should be) because I create chaos when there IS a to do list. Not a “catalyst” because it’s usually the same old stupid shit distracting me. I know lots of people have the same problem.. the mind frickin’ wanders.
It was quite late last night, and re-reading… you’re right and the theory is looking pretty infallible right now.
I actually came to say how admirable I think Dani & Chris are at just bossing life right now. From the exploring different cooking ideas, to the training, to even the scenery where they walk their dogs! From the outside looking in, their lives seem pretty inspiring!
leaves thread to go create more chaos amongst the things I should be doing
I just heard a podcast discussion about how a good life requires a little chaos. So it sounds like you’re instinctively doing what will lead to more excitement and life satisfaction.
Dani in 3-inch heels combined with me shaving my head and losing an inch of hair-height = I’m the “short guy” now. I’m owning it, like Tom Cruise walking around with a supermodel.
Did a lot of mobility and SMR for my left upper trap and shoulder complex. They’re tight and irritated today. No biggie. It’s just the revolving door of tweaks and injuries, as our girl QuadQueen says.
