Seriously, fuck ESPN and the media. Why are we supposed to care that she finished top 10 in a race? In 184 races she has won only 1 singular race. Stop telling me she is good because she is cute.
Bev Franics is a true pioneer for woman’s equality in sports. 500 pound squat, 501 deadlift, and the first woman to ever bench over 300 (335)
Becca Swanson proved women could beat men at a mans game totaling 2050 in a power meet Squatting 854, benching 600, and deadlifting 683.
Those are all weights many male lifters will never lift.
ESPN won’t tell you about them because of their lack of sex appeal. If you want equality in sports you have to look at the numbers, not their faces.
Anyone else think it is bullshit that only “Pretty” women are ever talked about in sports? Griner does not look good, but is dominating womens college ball! Never hear about her cause she isn’t fun to look at. That is stupid. She averags 21 points 8 rebounds a game.
No one thinks she’s the best, but it gets coverage because she’s competing in a male dominated sport with males.
If Lisa Leslie could play in the NBA, even if she wasn’t that great, the media would be all over her.
But sex does help sell an image because we, as the viewing public, as a whole, enjoy looking at good looking people over ugly people. It’s rating, brah.
Good points. I come off like an asshole because I am irritated with the media. I do not dislike Danica Patrick. I should have started my post with “Fuck ESPN” because they’re being so ridiculous.
Now, great point saying she is competing against men. BUT I don’t think it matters in a race car.
I understand them marketing her because obviously she is more fun to look at than Tony Stewart, but people are acting like she is the first ever woman to EVER do ANYTHING is sports.
Yeah, she’s definitely over hyped. Plus, I got shammed into viewing one of her go daddy videos a couple years ago when I was led to believe she’d be dressed scantily (she starts to undress in the commercial, then "view more at godaddy.com or whatever). She’s not even all that great but I was bored one day and thought “What the hell, lets see what Danica’s packing.”
Suffice it to say that she was not scantily dressed, and therefore I’ll never forgive her. I mean, if you’re going by the “sex sells” mantra, at least have the common courtesy to bring the goods, ya know?
I feel like this should have gone in the “Confession Thread”.
I agree sex sells, and I like her! She is a hottie and seems like a cool person.
Now, ESPN and the media is really what is irritating me. They’re acting old school sexist acting like women have never done ANYTHING in sports.
Just tired of them dancing around addressing her being a hot chick is 95% of the reason people mention her.
It is insulting to prior female athletes that paved the way in my humble opinion.
Lol, my bad, I meant my post should have gone into the confessions thread because I’m embarrassed to even have looked for her godaddy video a few years ago. I’ve got no problem with this thread.

Why is sex appeal so important in sports? [/quote]
ESPN does not give attention to the top women athletes because the vast majority of ESPN’s audience is men. ESPN is not a public service, they are a network. Most men don’t care about women’s sports just as most women don’t care about men’s sports. Until more women start tuning in to watch women’s sports, they will not be a major feature on ESPN.
Regardless, the Becca Swanson thing is a bad example because no one cares about powerlifting in general. The powerlifting community is a minority group on weight lifting websites, to call them a fringe group in the sporting world is an understatement.
