CT: Vertical Leap

Hey Christian,

How would you go about setting up a weight training program specifically for vertical leap improvement while in season.

By in season, i mean that the days are nice and sunny in Montreal and I find myself playing ball 3 or 4 times a week already.

Therefore overtaxing the legs becomes a problem. Any suggestions.

Eric, Mike or Chad if you wanna jump in on this, please do.

Honestly, trying to increase your vertical during a basketball season (or volleyball season) is not a wise thing to do. The best exercises to improve your VJ might be too much to add to an already “jumping-intensive” sport.

I see a lot of strength coaches have their players perform plyo work in-season … that’s just overkill if the athlete is already doing hundreds of jumps during the week!

The best advice I can give you if to focus on increasing limit strength in your lower body and add some olympic lifts if you know how to perform them.

When your season is over will be the time for plyometric and ballistic work … all in due time.

how would you arrange an off season program then, CT?

That’s a bit too complex to answer in a single post!

The methods to use are nothing out of this world …

olympic lifts,
heavy squats,
depth jumps,
jump squats,
jump lunges,
squat with bands,

The real trick is to arrange the methods properly so that there is a build up in power capacity not just a random physical development.
