Hey, what do you think about this piece of equipment? I love the idea of alternating presses with all the adjustability. They also offer leg extensions and other cool attachments. For what its worth, Kai Green endorses them.
This is to be your gym so I donāt want to yuck your yum, but since you asked my opinionā¦
It looks cool and hits a lot of the bigger movements, but it is still a machine that can be replaced by a barbell, smith bachine, or cable assembly. Except that the barbell, smith and cables would still offer more variability⦠you could do far more with less specific equipment, but this depends on your preferred training style honestly.
Some people LOVE machines and rarely touch a barbell; others LOVE free weights and dogmatically hate machines. I live between these two ideologies⦠I prefer to use barbells, dumbbells, and cables for most movements, but I found better results by using specific machines for specific purposes.
I can do 90% of the movements I need to do with either dumbbells, barbells, or cables - but certain movements simply cannot be done without specific machines⦠Hence why the only machines I have are Hamstring Curl and Quad Extension. Neither have good or effective substitutes that can be done with freeweights or cables. If I were to add an item, it would be a Glute Ham Raise/Reverse Hyper machine. These are the only movements that are worthwhile IMO to have their own machine - at least for a home gym.
If you have a written training regimen, look it over and see what equipment you would need for your most important exercises. If there is an alternative (that you like) which can be substituted with an piece of equipment you already need (aka power rack), then you may be better suited to just use your alternative movement.
Hamstring curls, quad extensions, glute ham raises, and reverse hypers have no good alternative
Thatās a pretty bitchinā workout space man.
Thank you! Now I need to get the swamp cooler up and running before the SoCal heat catches up lol
In addition to the brands that have been mentioned already, Iād look at Rep Fitness. My dumbbell set came from them as did my GHR and adjustable incline bench. Very happy with their service and quality. In fact, I thought the adjustable bench I bought would be a stop gap but it is so nice I havenāt had to upgrade.
This reminds me, @Luis5905 you should take a look at Spud Inc. for some of their straps and whatnot. IDK what you would need or what training you do, but some of their stuff can be a valid substitute for a regular piece of equipment.
Also, donāt go cheap on an adjustable free-bench if you get one. I went top grade on mine and itās more stable than most attached bench press-benches.
Some people are very picky with their barbells. If you are one of those people, look to get a high quality barbell that suits your needs. Itās probably worth mentioning the Safety Squat Bar (SSB) as well⦠pretty much everyone has glowing reviews of these.
Sorry, I know I kinda blew up the thread with my own responses - I had to do a shitload of researching and pricing (and logistical stuff) to get my home gym setup while gyms were closed in Cali⦠It may be worthwhile to create guide-thread for home gyms⦠Weāll see how badly I need to be distracted from school stuff ![]()
I like free weights, machines, and cables. Ive been doing nothing but free weights for the last 12 years on and off. I just think id use that machine quite a bit for shoulders and I love how its kind of like a dumbbell in the fact that you can alternate arms. But I thibk that youre right. This is more a want than a need.
Thanks for the suggestion. Ill look at Rep Fitness for sure.
Great suggestions. Ill look into all of that. Safety is my #1 priority for sure. So youre in school right now? Im working in wrapping up a supply chain/logistics degree myself.
I was 79 credits deep into an AS in Engineering and BS in Project management, then I decided to switch to BS Computer Information Systems - which Iām ~70 credits into now.
Nothing wrong with this; it truly is your gym. Iām just advocating to minimalize movement-specific equipment as you canāt really use it for anything else. If itās absolutely essential, then it is justfied IMO, but I also had like 1/5th your budget and 1/2 your space
Thats cool man. Its never too late to go back. I started school too but then got out to pursue real estate. (Which i dont regret at all) I just want to wrap it up and get it done. For me, aside from potentially more opportunity, its about setting that example for my kids. I love project management and my major is closely related to that field.
I look at machines like that and think āfuck, thatās a lot of moving partsā. Iāve never owned one, but iāve spent a fair bit of time in commercial gyms and thereās always at least one machine with a āsorry, iām brokenā sign on it.
Check out the āLever Armsā or āJammer Armsā that hook up to a power rack. Not exactly like a machine, but pretty cool and versatile.
I didnāt read the comments so this may have already been said.
A lot of the machines fit and feel different for different people. I have certain machines I really love and I feel that fit me well and do a good job of targeting the desired muscles, others may cause pain, or just not really mesh with my size/structure/ ROM. Iād be cautious about buying expensive machines unless youāve used them before.
Iām sure everyoneās already mentioned the free weight stuff and cables so thatās all Iām gonna add ![]()
Hey man, really appreciate this. Those lever arms are so cool. Maybe cheaper to buy a good rack and those attachments. Appreciate it!
Thats a very good point. Thanks for chiming in.
You might need 2 racks for your crew!
Good luck getting this thing together man.
Haha, yeah probably. Wife is about to deliver our 3rd boy in 2 months and we are hoping for 2 more after this baby. Then we want to adopt some siblings to keep them together, so maybe ill need 3 racks. I got time though⦠Thanks
House in the country with a tricked out home gym and a pack of kids. Thatās the good life!
Thanks man, especially the pack of kids.
