Hey guys,
long time listener, first time caller
I’m an 18 year old type-I diabetic from England, I’ve lifted in the past, but never had a good training partner to push me. I’ve now finally for the last month been training quite intensely on a 4 day split regime. I’ve never looked heavily into supplements except whey protein isolate when I was a bit younger, but now I have a good training partner in uni (college) I would like to take it to the next level and get some supplements. So a few questions I pose to you T-Nation pros, are:
- Is the use of creatine ok with diabetes?
- what supplements would you recomend to a beginner as essential supplements? ie iv heard protetin, fish oil, bcaa etc…
Any replies are appreciated alot thanks guys.

I’m type 1 also.
I never noticed any problems with creatine, such as excessive highs or lows. I don’t think it has any effect on blood sugar levels. My only beef with creatine is the stomach discomfort.
I think a daily protein supplement for type 1s is an excellent idea no matter if you work out or not. Why? A whey protein shake will fill you up like any normal meal, and you can make them with little carbohydrate content (which means you don’t need large insulin doses with them). So you get a big protein dose with little baggage. It’s a very good health move in general.
Fish oil is great for your HDL/LDL levels if you have issues there. Helps reduce post-workout muscle inflammation (soreness). I also think it has helped make my joints more healthy; I can squat with much less stress on my knees these days. It will also help you digest fatty meals, and remove stubborn body fat. Not sure about diabetes-related health problem help though (such as reduction of microvascular complications). I take it every day. Don’t plan on stopping either.
That’s about it for T1 diabetes and supplements. Anything else is probably overhyped and/or a marketing scam.
Type 2 here, which I realize is a different deal, but it hasn’t had any effect on my levels either if that helps at all. Actually my levels have been tight for quite a while without any meds so I don’t know how much I apply.
thanks for the replies guys, I received my Promax extreme today, it’s pretty tasty, so I’m quite happy with it…
Has anyone any past experience with a supplement called Thermabol: It’s a weight loss supplement which I know can affect blood sugar levels.
It has a substance called chronium in it which, I’ve heard can lower blood sugars. Can anyone add any clarity as to whether it is safe or not for a diabetic to be taking. I’m considering jumping onto it but carefully monitoring its effects on my blood sugar levels alot.
What do people think?
Hey guys,
I’m new to this site and found this thread about diabetes and bodybuilding and figured that I’d introduce myself and give my two cents worth.
I’ve had diabetes for about 16 years now, am recently on the pump, and have been lifting on and off (mainly off) for about 10 years now but have recently gotten back into it.
Yes, I’ve taken creatine for years and it doesn’t affect your blood sugars and appears to be perfectly safe. Alot of my other diabetic bodybuilding friends also use it.
I currently use this creatine stack that one of my diabetic bodybuilding friends gave me - this stuff really rocks. It has completely transformed my workouts, I’m lifting more then ever, have a great pump that lasts for hours afterwards, great focus and energy.
German Creatine Mono - 5g pre - 2g post
Beta-Alanine - 1.5gpre - 1.5g post (I use HMB also)
Bcaa - 5g pre-5g during-5g post
Arginine-AKG - 3g pre-1.5-post
Glutamine - 5g pre-5g post
Caffeine/Tyrosine tabs 200 to 300mg caffeine-250 to 375mg tyrosine pre

I’m currently looking into taking ECA stack. Has anyone here with diabetes ever used it?
Apparently chromium can lower blood sugars a bit. Try it and watch your blood sugars carefully.
I don’t know how many other diabetic bodybuilders are on this forum, but we should probably start a thread on diabetes and bodybuilding - as a place to talk about bodybuilding issues as related to diabetes, blood sugars, insulin (and using insulin as a 'roid) etc…
