i gotta say, as weird as his style looked at first, i kinda like it’s flow…and i f’in loved “the Perfect Weapon!”

unrealistic for most people, tho.

i’m watching the UFC 118 promo right now, and am more than a little confused by James Toney…i mean, i can’t understand a word he’s saying. i hope he wins…at least Randy’s still coherant, and has business skills to fall back on…

actually, i hope Randy wins, although Toney has a legitimate shot of KOing him in the 1st. after 3 min, i can’t see Toney moing much.

the rest of the card really looks good though…

Welcome to MMA Toney.

Yep…told you so…

wow…i kinda expected that, but Randy made that look too easy. nice!

I am very surprised any of the MMA guys here really thought Toney stood a chance. Maybe in his absolute prime, but definitely not now, and not in the MMA ring.

I was under the impression that he’s a current boxing champion and not retired or injured or anything.

That comes from first of all being an ignoramus- secondly from getting hit in the head far too many times.

Toney would not have stood a chance in his prime. It wasn’t age that prevented him from making it a contest, it was his skill level in mma. I don’t care who the boxer is they are going to have to have reasonable ground skills. They would certainly need to know how to defend a takedown. Toney probably took the fight hoping to tag Couture coming in, it didn’t work out.

Does anyone really think someone like Mayweather would do much better without a ground game? Sure he’d move back faster but the end would come about the same way. Boxing is not mma, and anyone who thought they were virtually the same thing needs to think again.

haha he’s not injured or retired, but the guy’s glory days were a long ass time ago, and he’s a former champ. He’s 42 years old and past his prime.

But regardless, this is one of the very few things I agree with Zeb on- there’s a whole other skillset needed for MMA, and unless you’ve got some kind of strong background in grappling, you’re not going to win.

In that octagon, there’s just not enough room to move- if a guy wants you on the ground, eventually you’re going to go to the ground. And “catching him on the way in” is just some term that announcers and writers like to use when they don’t realize how fucking hard it is to punch someone in the face cleanly as he shoots in on you.

we haven’t heard from all of those people with 'gut feelings" yet today…

always easy to have 20/10 hindsight, enjoy it when you’re right, but dont gloat, we all pick losers once inawhile

Was anyone else surprised that Randy’s lazy ass shot actually got a take down? I guess I am giving more credit to Toney than I should. The old debate should be settled, MMA fighters are better at MMA than boxers. Go figure…

Not at all. Come on man, Randy’s been wrestling for like 35 years - he had absolutely no problem taking down Mark Coleman, who was a world-class wrestler at around the same time Toney was a world-class boxer (early-to-mid 90s). Why would he have problems with a fat, old boxer when he had no problems with an in-shape, old wrestler?

I honestly think as long as Couture stays with the sideshow fights he can keep winning.

One final point regarding James Toney-Those who are crying that he’s 42 years old and past his peak need to keep in mind that he fought 47 year old in Randy Couture.

No I didn’t mean were people surprised that he took Toney down in general. I only saw highlights on ESPN of the fight, but Randy’s shot that led to his takedown was like a foot short and he still managed to get Toney down. Again, because I only saw highlights I could be exaggerating/way off, it just didn’t seem like a good shot to me.

Randy is my favorite fighter, I know he is a freakish wrestler man, I never would question that. It just seemed like that particular takedown was shit.

that was a low single, where you aim for ther ankle/calf (vs a high single, the more common version, where you aim for the knee/thigh).

for being such a big fan, you don’t seem to be a fan of wrestling…
