Ok, is it just me, or is this a recurring theme in the UFC. One champ goes on a tear, and seems totally invincible(Hughes, Iceman, even Silvia) and everyone thinks it will break the sport.
Maybe it’s the whiskey talking, but someones gonna beat him. Sometime. Blah.
I love Randy, but this would end badly for him. First round KO would be my guess unless they just didn’t engage, a la Leites, but I can’t see Randy fighting like a chump in that fashion.

Would prefer Cro Cop or Fedor. (Yes, I know Cro Cop is -done-, but he’s only looked really bad against opponents that have had a massive size advantage over him: Overeem, Kongo, Gonzaga)[/quote]
CroCop was beating Kongo before he broke his ribs. Couture’s an animal, but not sure this would be a smart move. Silva’s basiclly a smoother, stronger, more powerful and accurate Lidell on the offensive end, and he’s obviously as elusive as anyone in the game. That doesn’t bode well for Couture… or anyone for that matter, ha.

He only has three fights before he’s done and no one has demolished their opponents like Anderson. Hughes lost to Penn, lost rouds to Sherk, got triangled by Newton, and I think would have lost to Gomi or Sakura at his prime.

Chuck knocked out 7 contenders in a row didn’t he? Not trying to start an argument, just trying to draw parallels to situations in the (short) history of the UFC.

Ok,are saying Hughes would have lost to Gomi or Sakurai in his prime…OR Hughes would have lost to Gomi/Sakurai at their prime??
I ask, because you do know that Hughes beat Sakurai when he was at top echelon?? Well…that is after Anderson Silva came in and dethroned Sakurai when he was considered the top pound-for-pound fighter.
The UFC actually tried to get Silva when he was fighting at 170 to be put in the mix with Hughes and Newton. BUT low and behold,he didn’t like their contract offer…almost like that other guy. Imagine how things would have turned out if the UFC had brought Silva to the WW division back then.
In Mach’s prime. No way Chuck was ever number 1 at light heavy, he was fed wrestlers mostly in the UFC and his Takedown defense allowed him to win. When Chuck fought in Pride I think he would of lost to Henderson, Rua, and Prime Wanderlei.

And what world-breaker opponents has Silva fought in his stint as champ? You could use your same argument for him. The talent is not there though to make a good fight for Silva atm.
I can’t see this one going to couture, unless he pulls some crazy stuff out. After watching Silva completely embarrass Forrest, I am having a hard time believing Couture can put anything together. Couture is definitely one of the smartest guys in the game ever, but there aren’t a whole lot of holes to work with in Silva’s game. He has the most accurate hands in the game today, and will break any dirty boxer with his clinch.
If he gets on the ground, he still has his BJJ black belt skills to fall back on. Unless Silva is hiding some poor conditioning (we haven’t seen him go for a long match ever), I think he will end Couture’s career. Liddel seemed like a titan in the stand up game, but everybody knew he could be beaten if somebody actually got him on the ground without getting their face dented in the process
i like randy but he needs to chill on the Silva thing. Anderson would make him look like he had cement shoes on. Truthfully, as much as i like/respect Randy, if he pushed and got this fight some how, i’d be hoping Silva dusted him quicker than he did Forrest.
From the fights I’ve seen of Silva on the ground he likes to be on his back and set up the triangle choke. The problem I think is that he can be outpointed that way. So just as Couture says…get him to the ground, smother, pound, stay chest to chest and away from the triangle. Boring but effective.
Silva’s trouble at LHW will be big guys like Couture…the LHW who is strong as hell and can wrestler. Couture has been the HEAVYWEIGHT champ. Silva is coming UP from 185 to fight at 205 and Couture has fought UP to the HW division. Speed and accuracy of strikes will only get you so far. Shoot, smother, pound.
Rashad Evans is another possible spoiler…a strong former HW.
