Counterproductive?

But with one or two joker sets in your program you will be approaching 100% of your training max several times a week.

Suddenly you are lifting heavy each workout, see what I mean?

You can still lift heavy several times a week. For a person who is injury free and has done enough prep work, it’s doable. Especially for a person who is not competing in a sport.

Cheers jim!

Powerlifting is my only sport so I guess that I’m good to go!

Will continue with 531, jokers and FSL

Onwards and upwards

This is why 531 has a training max. Using 85 to 90 percent of your real max as a training max will almost guarantee that you will not burn yourself out. Provided that you are eating enough, sleeping enough, and not being a fucking idiot with assistance work.

Also doing 5 cycles forward 3 cycles back will keep you from stalling which will in turn prevent burn out. I’ve been doing 531 going on 5 years now and have never burnt myself out. I have followed the principles and Jims advice. You should as well. [/quote]

Can I ask what your progress has been in the 5 yrs. I have only been doing 531 for about 5 months. Love it so far.

Well, five years ago I was a fairly lean 170lbs. I was in the service and could run and do all types of bodyweight exercises all day long. My best lifts when I started were
squat 185
bench 155
deadlift 225
press 120

those were my absolute maxes. Over 5 years my weight has gone all the way up to 240 and now back down to 195 where im at now. As of right now my training maxes are

squat 425
bench 290
deadlift 415
press 200

I haven’t tested a 1rm in quite some time and have used the rep max calculations to get my training maxes. I use 85% instead of 90%

I am now going to be implementing the 5 cycles forward 3 cycles back method. Also I only up my training max every 6 weeks instead of 4
