Counter-Strike

Since I have seen some PC game posts lately I dont feel to ashamed to admit that I am somewhat of a gamer myself.

I just got Counter-Strike last week and i like it, but it is just that i am so bad at it. I have played unreal with a certain amount of success but this is humiliating. Some of my buddies told me that everyone online cheats so not to get too upset.

I dunno, any advice on how to get better? Of course, I am going to keep playing - it is so addictive.

A lot of people do cheat, but most of them are terrible, and you should still be able to beat them when you get tthe game figured out. The main thing is this is not a typical fps, you can’t expect to out-shoot your opponents, although you often will if you are good at fps games. You need to figure out how to be where they don’t expect you; and so timing is everything. I am really bad at fps games, but in my prime (cs 1.3, I think it was) I made it to #4 out of several thousand on a server, by outsmarting the others.

I’ll leave you these clues: find out where they are weakest, penetrate and flank the rest, use a silencer whenever you can, and don’t shoot if you can’t make the kill (better to wait, rather than attract attention). Yep, cs is awesome.

Learn the maps really well first, then cheat. Cheating is fun.

Just make sure your hack is VAC proof.

It takes time. When I first started, I was getting killed 7 or 8 or 9 times for every kill of my own. Now I am about even. This is with about 4 months of playing. I don’t cheat- what is satisfying about that?

Look out for me. CS name- ghb wazer.

In my prime I was one of the best 56kers in the UK and Ireland, that was years ago though and to play without broadband would be unthinkable now.

I was a gamer too. Filled the void after high school sports interestingly enough. Unfortunately I got fat, and lazy because of it. But then I found this site so it’s all good.

Ok, now that that is over with, I was more of an rts’er (Brood War, War3), but I played quite a bit of CS too. Keys I think are to just play a lot of the game. Know all the maps, get the controls down, get your aim down, overall just know the game well. There are stuff out there like missionred.com that can improve mouse seed and aim but in retrospect who cares, just play the game. Like anything the more you play the better you are. I guess also if you die watch the best players in 1st person to see how they move, aim, etc. Have fun!

I don’t play anymore, but I can give you a few pointers. You want to learn maps really well, then learn the basics of “combat.” For example, if you know someone is around the corner (he made noise, just killed someone, etc) then go around the corner with your gun aimed where his head should be, cutting the .5 second it takes to move your mouse is what seperates those getting kills and those getting killed.

Also, learn to strafe shoot well so that you can pop out, get quality shots off at an opponent and then hide again. Oh and the main weapons to use are the USP, Glock, Desert Eagle, MP5, AK47, M4A1, get good with those guns.

Edit- I just remembered, learn to control gun recoil, its different on each gun. Its one thing to aim and hit someone with your first shot, but when you can control 4-5 shot bursts and have everyone hit, that is when you will start racking up kills.

Pick one map to play and get good at it. Then branch out to others.

Pick 2 sets of weapons. Cheap ones for when you have no money and the primo ones for when you do.

Always use body armour if you can afford it. The only time you shouldn’t be using is in the initial pistol only round cos you want to buy the deagle.

Go for headshots. Set your station up so you have the best ROM possible on your mouse.

Don’t go toe to toe. Try to lure people around corners and pop them off when they follow you.

Practise heaps. It takes a long time. Most other players have probably been playing for months or years, so you need to get a lot of hours under your belt to be competitive.

Don’t cheat. You don’t gain anything except the satisfaction of knowing you’re wrecking other peoples fun. That’s for mentally ill people. do it right.

You’ll know you’ve gotten good whenyou get banned from a server for cheating when you weren’t.

As for weapons, it really doesn’t matter which ones you use, just stick to a few and master them. In my prime, I was a bastard with the .45 smg, and now I am useless with it. Also, on the server where I was #4, I was undefeated with the 5-7, it was crazy, but when I pulled it out, I was invincible. Funny, cause I only used it because I found the sound it makes soothing.

Anyway, learn the map, learn the weapons, and pretty much everything else is style.

Yeah, I guess I should learn the maps better, I am dead so much of the time I should have them memorized pretty quick. Other than CS, are there any websites that have all the maps illustrated?

Kevlar and helmit or no helmit?

Crouching when shooting and learning to burst fire will also help out a lot with shooting accuracy.

Both

Learn the Dusts map first, they are the easiest and most popular maps to learn.

Also try setting up your controls using the number keys on the right, easiest for many people to master.

CT is a superb game. Realistic guns and if you dont play as a team you get fucked up fast.

My advice is if you are the CT use the M4A1 first rifle you can chose, it works really well with a silencer and even if you fire like crazy has a good chance of hitting your opponent. If you are a terrorist most people go for the AK47 which is really accurate with the first few bursts of fire but if you keep the trigger pressed you will not hit shit. Learn to burst fire like one of the guys said previously.

Choose the desert eagle for handguns if you find yourself getting accurate at aiming. It can kill enemies from a couple of body hits.

Always buy kevlar.

Learn the maps.

Reload around walls or corners, never out in the open where you can be picked off easily.

Learn to use flashbombs, and set a hotkey so that you can quickly change over to grenades.

Run with the knife at the start to get a head start.

A good idea is to use the voice call signs like “Enemy spotted” etc. Saved my life many times when people on the same team have come to my aid.

Great game, if you want to get better just keep playing it and dont get too frustrated.

A couple tips…

  1. Stay calm. New players tend to be used to the twitch or “pray and spray” style of other FPS games. This is a thinking man’s game. When you see an enemy, take the time to line up your shot - don’t just hold down the trigger.

  2. Keep your aiming reticle still and centered around the “head” area at all times. Watch any pros play and you’ll see what I mean - newbies wave their mouse everywhere, while exeperienced players keep it eerily still. This way you’re always set up for your next shot.

  3. Be careful about reloading. Make sure you’re in a safe spot, as people can hear you when you do.

  4. Stick with your team! Strength lies in numbers.

  5. Use silent methods of movement, such as the crouch and walk. You’ll have an easier time sneaking up on your opponents.

  6. Don’t be overly aggressive. Conserve your shots and try to achieve optimal placement on the map. Certain points tend to evolve into firefights very rapidly. Holding back and stalking the enemy makes them play on your terms.

As to the individual who suggested setting movement to your number keys - don’t! Your right hand should be committed to your mouse, and your left on WASD.

Left hand on the numbers keys, right hand on the mouse.

Numbers PAD is easiest. Left Fucking hand on numbers, right on mouse.

Reload *

8 is foreward

2 is back

4 is left

6 is right

Drop /

0 jump
del crouch
enter walk

7 & 9 strafe left and right

Sorry I diddn’t spelll it out. If you want a solid set up let me know.

Like I said, it’s all style. I never use a desert eagle unless I have an smg, there is no point. I often jum straight into a gun fight, if I suspect the other guys are lined up (this can get you 3+ kills at the same time). I never tell my team where I am, because I want to attract as little attention to myself as possible, and I don’t wait behind corners, because experienced players know what corners to look behind, and will be aiming for your head when they go around them. But it’s really all style, and whetever you learn will probably work for you.
