True, but it might cost more which is why Trump would rather send checks. What you are suggesting is what they are doing here, but as more things shut down there will be more and more people on it (employment insurance, coronavirus employment benefits, and welfare) and it really can’t keep going for too long. But the alternative is anarchy, so what can you do?
Did people starve to death or what?
No, but give them enough time and it might add up to that.
In Seattle we are under a shelter in place order. I’ve bought groceries, weed, gone mountain biking, and Backcountry skiing all in the last week. But the only people I’ve interacted with in person are my fiance and dog. Gonna be like that for the next few weeks.
It’s not ideal, buts also really not bad at all… My company put on a virtual happy hour conference call last Friday afternoon. My fiance attended a virtual bachelorette party on Saturday. Best time in history to be under a shelter in place order.
I’m terrified over the economy. Staying away from people is fucking EASY though.
If that’s the case we are all screwed anyways and we’ve seen millions of deaths either from the virus or from hospitals that can’t take care of the other typical killers
You know a lot of people who aren’t worried that their actions might contribute to death right now? Pro-lifers! Abortion big no no. Avoid big crowds for a bit because it might lead to a lot of deaths? Fuck that shit don’t tell us to panic! This is Jesus punishing us because gays are getting married!
Depends. What period of time? So far I’ve heard 10 days to 9 months.
Don’t underestimate the government’s ability to turn a short term problem into a decade long shit storm. See FDR.
We should consistently re-evaluate. 9 months right now is panicking because we don’t know where it will be 1 month from now. 10 days based on what we know right now from other countries and where our numbers are headed seems like a pretty risky move.
Yeah FDR was super unpopular only serving 4 terms. Everyone loved his predecessor because he was letting the free market figure it all out for them. The people in the depression were all saying “we don’t want any help!”
I mean he’s usually considered top 5 by historical scholars but if you ain’t number one…
Hoover a free market figure? A topic for another thread, but you are severely mistaken. And what does popularity have to do with anything? Trump is popular, Mao was popular etc. Doesn’t matter.
I was judging what he did vs FDR. If you think Trumps popular then you’re just like Pat and don’t know how numbers work nor have looked at his historically favorability compared to Presidents since we’ve been polling accurately. But we don’t need to go down that road here.
More on topic But be honest Trump is already talking differently than he was a few days ago. Do you really think he is going to err on the side of caution with this? He will go pretty much the minimum or less and it doesn’t matter how many health professionals tell him otherwise. If your pro let’s get back out there even if it may be too soon then Trumps the perfect guy for the time. He will have no problem saying it ain’t that bad or he trusts his gut or something. He probably thinks he knows more than his own doctors already.
And economist…and generals…and previous President’s…you name it…
He said as much in his “press/I’m FDR/conference” the other day.
In terms of the economy and navigating what is amounting to a true economic crisis;Trump may not be seeking advice from other Administrations (especially President Obama’s) on how to navigate this pending economic disaster…but I guarantee you that Mnuchin and others are.
I believe Australian scientists have now come up with a blood test to show antibodies in a person’s blood to show if they have had the virus, but recovered from it. Not sure how the logistics would work in getting the masses tested, but none the less a helpful discovery.
