Coronavirus - What Happened?

They tried to follow what was being done in Singapore and Hongkong at the time. Singapore did a major fuckup that’s an anomaly around the world so it wouldn’t be fair to use that to compare but the public never forgave them for their anti-mask stance, which you can easily see from their recent election results.

Hongkongers were wearing masks from the start and pressured the government to lockdown. Especially small businesses, which you will find in abundance there. Why? Because they could get government grants and subsidies while defaulting on rents and delaying or defaulting on debts because an official lockdown would serve as sufficient reason to do so.

Singapore mandated something similar when they had to lockdown:

And did this:

Seriously, I’m not expecting people who have never done business, especially B2C ones, to understand this shit, but at least stop listening to the stupid bums on YouTube. They don’t know what they’re talking about.

Oh God NoOOOOO

From what I understand, some things were closed early. People listened to recommendations that they stay home(because Swedes apparently trust their government…not the case here), which caused businesses harm anyway.

I’ll fix my claim again: Without forced and encouraged shutdowns and slow downs, nothing would have changed. 2020 would not be memorable because nothing would have noticeably changed from 2018/2019.

First, that is never an appropriate response to Judas Priest.

Second, there’s a reason the most popular songs are often the catchiest… You can’t get them out of your head no matter how hard you try! :joy:

That would be a fantasy world you’d be living in. Do you know who first declared this to be a global pandemic? It wasn’t the WHO. It was the FUCKING WASHINGTON POST. You think people would have just gone about their daily lives in the US after seeing everything else happening all over the world?

I don’t know about NYC, L.A., and D.C., but here? Yes. Things happen all over the world all the time, and Americans don’t typically care.

That would fall under what I said about ENCOURAGED.

A lot of people still care about what they’re told by the media and other institutions. Remove the fear mongering that’s gone on for almost a year, and no one would’ve noticed anything different.

That’s why I said you’re living in a fantasy world. There are no ā€œifsā€ fitting your premise in the real world. The media is going to do what the media is going to do unless you want the government to control what they can write.

And that’s not even discounting the absurdity of your premise since even the fact that more people were dying prematurely(notice I didn’t even say due to COVID) is going to sound the alarm bells.

What you would really need is a nice little government cover up or complete denial, which apparently failed to work even in 3rd World Countries like Indonesia and Malaysia.

Do you think the US would be conveniently absent from a site like this?

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

There are so many factors that render your claim invalid I don’t even have the time LIST them out.

I don’t think so. Reporting the fact that covid infections have touched all continents except Antarctica and calling it a pandemic is just that - reporting. That’s the textbook case of what pandemic means.

I’ve got no great love for the Washington Post either. But that’s straightforward.

Come on guys, common sense. If these countries could avoid lockdowns and just let everything go about about as per normal, THEY WOULD HAVE. Seriously, look at this shit.

Why? They HAVE NO MONEY. This is some 12 year old kid level kind of logic here, dudes.

You think the government can’t control the press there? They could have suppressed all information and you’d still have the bodies piling up in hospitals.

I agree with this. ā€œPandemicā€ means very little, as far as I can tell—just that something spreads pretty easily and in multiple places; really has nothing to do with severity of illness. Around here, no one changed anything until being told they had to; I don’t know how it was elsewhere.

If something was to be done, it should have been early and severe…but can you imagine the cries of ā€œMartial Law! Trump bad! Martial Law! Police is the bad evil.ā€ if an effective lockdown had been enforced?

That’s about correct. Rule of thumb is it generally needs to be a ā€œnewā€ bug. Which means either never seen before, or previously squashed and went away for a while. Some exceptions apply, but this is why the seasonal flu isn’t a pandemic, and if polio had a resurgence it would be.

Same here. That doesn’t mean it would have stayed that way after enough people in the area got super sick though. ā€œDemandā€ for things is vulnerable to fear just like the stock market.

Action should have been early and yes, I can.

Years ago my best friend and I were looking at some old photos from when he was an F-16 jockey and I said, ā€œHey this guy has ā€˜Screaming for Vengeance’ logo on his helmet.ā€

His reply, ā€œDude, that’s me!ā€

That’s probably the coolest real life thing I’m going to hear all week. Wicked!

Side note - you need to read the book ā€œScream of Eaglesā€. Its the story of how the real Top Gun school was formed. It is simply awesome… Those guys are just badasses. Mike Metcalf (played in the movie by Tom Skerrit) is real, and a monster.

Ill check that out.

My bud went to whatever is USAF equivalent, but didn’t pull any Ph D instructor hotties there…
