Who or what is Bob Hope putting the lash to in that picture of The Road To Utopia?

The dog that’s sitting on Bing Crosby’s uh, lap?

Those sure were the good old days.

I’m too young to say that lol, but in some ways sure. Other ways not as much. But it doesn’t prevent me from loving the movies!

That’s what I’m getting at. Somehow it seemed normal to have Bob Hope whipping something out-of-the-picture back then.

It was probably a black guy.

I guess it could be a dog or team of dogs. Luckily Bob Hope is still around for us to ask him about it.

You believe in commietopia?

I believe in freedom first, not utopia. Paradise is not in this world.

Context? I don’t recall Trump saying he had ā€œabsolute power,ā€ of everything. Wasn’t he referring to oversight of interstate commerce?

I think what most people don’t get about Libertarianism it’s not a team sport. It’s not about picking ā€œyour guy,ā€ and sticking with him. There is often nuance that is important and a lot of people refuse to understand this because they can’t get out of this my team vs your team though process.

Nah. It’s more because most libertarians portray a person who wants all of the benefits of a well organized and orderly society while railing against the constructs that form that society.

Thats why every single discussion of libertarianism exposes childish naivete and obstinacy of the person trying to support the concept.

It’s essentially a bunch of man-children making pouty lips and saying ā€œI don’t wanna playā€ while pretending to be patriotic, rugged individualists.

No one buys it. :joy:

I remember when in my mid-twenties I’ve read both Hayek and von Mises and went apeshit for libertarianism. I mean, I was so into it that I wanted everyone to hear about the best way for societies to self-organize and spread the gospel of the perfect model for social relationships.

I hear about a group of ā€œYoung Libertariansā€ and came to one of their meetings.

It went like this:

YL president: ā€œFirst topic of the day - how government funded shelters for victims of domestic violence incentivize women to seek out abusers knowing that they have an easy way out of a relationshipā€

Me: ā€œI’ll see myself outā€

I don’t believe in any 'topias.

No, you believe in (regulated) freedoms.

Utopias don’t promise paradise; they promise order.

Me: ā€œDamn, these incel groups are getting clever with their names.ā€

This.

Excellent characterization, @SkyzykS, that warrants emphasis.

Thank you, but I’d also have to credit @thunderbolt23 for being influential in forming that view.

It’s easy to entertain an idea like that and end up way out in the weeds arguing about the articles of marqui and wanting to be a pirate, in the abstract.

But logging on to a giant network (the www) formed by companies that accept billions of public dollars, using a public utility (electricity) from a location with an address that can be reached by a road, (almost anywhere in the US) that has posh public amenities such as hospitals, emergency medicine, police protection, weather advisory and response… You get the picture.

The irony of it. I just can’t play pretend that hard. And that’s coming from an alcoholic/drug addict that has played some pretty high stakes games of pretend!

Glad you said that, @SkyzykS…

The back-and-forth that used to occur between @thunderbolt23 and pushharder taught me more about our Republic; it’s history; the Constitution; and law that I ever learned in any class in College.

You can learn some amazing things here if you let your ego get out of the way.

I’m aware your mind edited this out already.

You have forgotten Trump’s actual quote, and remembered Nick’s interpretation of Trump’s quote, which had him jumping through hoops to stuff words into the man’s mouth. Selective memory is fascinating.

Don’t credit me - you said it better than I did. :grinning:
