I probably have more than enough to last a week for me, my wife, and kids, I was just thinking that if everything is totally shut down for weeks it would be a problem. I have a a whole bunch of steak in the fridge, canned fish of various types, and a good portion of rice. Now we also have pasta and dry beans. I have weights at home so i can keep training, I just need to make sure I can still eat.
I guess survival isn’t really the concern for me, at least not yet, I just want to keep training and eating well like normal but maybe my standards are too high. I was going to book a hotel for a powerlifting meet in May but right now it looks like that might not even happen.
The hotel I was looking at has free cancellation up to 24 or 48 hours before and is part of a chain, so won’t go bankrupt too fast.
Aside from that, in a situation like this I think it’s best if you can try to continue with as close as possible to your normal lifestyle. The people who will get seriously ill or die are a small minority, but a lot of people won’t be able to work and then gyms and things like that are closing. Imagine being stuck at home with nothing to do, can’t work out or anything, and your workplace is closed so now you have no income.
That would really suck, and this is also going to make this economic crash even worse than it’s already looking because anywhere that is locked down for long enough you can expect to have people getting evicted or unable to pay their mortgages and losing their houses. The cure might be worse than the disease.
Just a point of order here–almost all coronaviruses have the ability to be transmitted from animals to humans. It’s one of the general traits of that “class” of viruses.
Also, all viruses mutate not just the serious ones.
This is a supply side issue, for goodness sake, it’s not a cash liquidity issue. Helicopter as much money as you want, it won’t make closed businesses and factories be open if they aren’t.
Edit: for those who followed that crash yesterday, a mate of mine is a hedge fund coder, word on the street is that that was the smart money de-leveraging, not the extent of the eventual drop.
I really really hate this move. It burns much of the tiny leverage we have against an eventual recession and it doesn’t solve the problem. Eventually when we actually need QE (debatable but you know what I mean) we won’t have as much room to operate.
I didn’t get it at all. Unsophisticated guys I know (but with visions of easy retirements built on 401Ks) are now bailing, instead of using options. Well earned commissions to Money ‘managers’ indeed!
I wonder if it would have made more sense to just shut down all trading for a couple of weeks - a couple of weeks ago. In order to help people see this isn’t some nuclear missile exchange, where the EOW is at hand. But computer trading is what it is, I suppose.
Congrats on your (both of you) call a couple months back on VIX.
Indeed. Rates are already in the toilet and the QE spigot is turned on all the way. What moves do they even have left if we do enter a liquidity crisis?
The idiocy at the university may be more contagious than the virus. Probably too late for the kids who go there. Liberty University…where you’re free from having a brain. Why does Fox continue to give someone like this an interview?
Okay? I’m not a pathologist, nor do I really keep track of things like this. I don’t see why it’s necessary for you to nit pick me.
I wasn’t implying that they didn’t. What I said was just concentrated on this particular one. I’m just commenting on what I’ve been reading about this whole thing.
Again, I’m not well versed with things like this, so perhaps I could’ve used a different word or something.
This is actually why living your life as normal as possible isn’t being advocated though. It’s essentially use social distancing to limit the spread of the disease. Sucks now but less time closed in the long run if the thing doesn’t get its hooks in everyone.
Short periods of no gym no work as opposed to long periods and more deaths. The quicker we can say this virus is heading down the less impact on all aspects of life.
And I say that as someone who hasn’t changed their lifestyle one bit yet.
Ehh I don’t like using that as a reason. I don’t know the individual at all. Nor his life, aspirations, accomplishments, etc. I choose to pay attention to intent.
I was just making a joke, but in all seriousness this particular sub forum can be brutal. Being close to correct will result in getting torn apart if someone catches it. This particular thread hasn’t been too bad IMO, but some of the others are basically online fighting (I enjoy it, but it isn’t for everyone).
