Hi guys, I’m new to this board and new to powerlifting (8 months or so). I have seen big gains in all 3 lifts in this short period, however I am a severe ecto at 6’2 165(!)lbs but the more I challenge myself in the weight room and see results the more I love powerlifting. So at this point I’m considering diving into the sport and entering competition, however my total weight of the 3 would be 7-800 lbs as of right now, but I wouldn’t enter one until 2011.
So really what I’m trying to ask you all is if it’s worth going for a competition at this point, or holding off until I will be able to score better and avoid humiliating myself in front of strangers.
Every time someone asks this the answer is always just do it no matter how bad you are. The goal of the first meet is to just do it, not to do good in it. The 2nd one you can worry about improving.

Agreed. I’ve seen many topics like this one. I bet if you search for topics like this, you’ll see that what this guy said is true.
Thanks for the link. Yeah believe it or not in January I was about 152 lbs. and now I’m drinking the better part of a gallon of whole milk per day in addition to stuffing myself with nutritious food. There’s no way I’m staying at this weight for long. I’ll actually be getting solid sleep when college starts back up, I have to wake up at 5:30 am for my summer job now.
Man it doesn’t matter if your maxing 200 for your third attempt on a squat. The crowd loves seeing you push through a struggle. Get your name on the records. It will only keep that fire burning inside of you.
I say go for it. Get some meet experience under your belt! Go into it with an open mind and learn the mental side of a meet not just performing the lifts. Also you may run into some other lifters in your area that you can learn from and possibly train with. Good luck

One more rookie question, is it necessary to get lifting clothes outside of regular workout clothes-I use underarmor generally- for a competition?
Look at your fed rules. USAPL rules require a singlet, plain t-shirt with no logos, briefs not boxers, tall socks, and flat shoes.

Good job! milk is the shit (literally for some people =p)

It’s a helluva lot of fun to compete. And you’re really only competing against yourself if you choose to see it that way.
I’m 5’4", only 110 lb. Don’t look like a powerlifter. And have put up some woefully low numbers at some meets. But it’s so addictive.
Go for it.
It’s absolutely addictive to compete. However, like everyone here has said, you just need to get out and get your first meet under your belt. I can almost guarantee that the people who are waiting for their lifts to get better to compete because the want to win, will never compete. They will never be good enough.
I do well here, for my size and age but when I compare to prominent lifters I suck. There will always be people better than you. Worrying about it is what will keep you out of the game.
I’m looking at doing my first meet in november and am excited as hell about it. If I were you I’d just sign up for a meet so that way you have something to commit to, something to train towards. It’s always better to have a set deadline and a goal then to have “well this is my goal for when I eventually do my first PL meet.” Just sign up and rock out.
If you’re not used to gear, don’t compete in one that uses it. I’m doing USAPL raw open for my first one, sounds like that may be good for you too. Give it a go, lift some heavy shit, and enjoy the experience.
As a side note would there be any issue with me wearing what I’m wearing in my avatar for a PL meet as my singlet? It’s a rowing unisuit and only has my team emblem on it very small in the upper right chest. Anyone know if that would meet USAPL standards?
