Confused whether I'm insulin sensitive or insensitive

Just finished reading JB’s Massive Eating and frustrated regarding whether I am insulin sensitive or not.
I am not fat at 160lbs and 9%bf and I just had a blood test and the fasted glucose reading was 123mg/dl. I think this means I’m insensitive right? and a hi pro/fat low carb is what I have to plan around? Thx. Z

A fasting bg of 123 is just a point under being diabetic. You are supposed to be under 110 but from 110-124 is considering IFT (Impaired Fasting Tolerance). Above 124 you should be tested again for diabetes. Considering your weight/bf, I would assume you are fairly young. I was diagnosed with type I diabetes just a year ago (well, a year and a few days) just as school let out for the summer. I was 16 and despite being like 10 years older than all the other people who I was in diabetes training group with, they said that every once in awhile they find people my age. Chances are, you are probably not type II diabetic, that requires being obese for quite a while or being severly obese as a child these days, but just because you are in your late teens, don’t think you are too old for Type I, I met a guy who was 23 who just got diagnosed…

That being said, best of luck and hope everything is all right. Don’t mean to scare ya but 123 is actually pretty damn high for a fasting glucose :frowning:

I agree that your fasting glucose levels are high (If you were truly fasting). However, you do not have to be obese to have type II diabetes (insulin resistant, adult onset, non-insulin dependent). A diet high in carbs, when consumed for a prolonged period can lead to insulin resistance. I would suggest that you have an oral glucose tolerance test (tests your body’s response to a glucose load). They should check both your fasting glucose and fasting insulin and monitor both as the test progresses. However, they will usually only measure glucose unless you request both. They should also check your hemoglobin A1c, which gives you an estimate of your avg. blood glucose levels for the past 3-4 months. If you do have glucose intolerance, I would suggest that you util. a higher prot/fat diet and low GI carbs. Also a potent multivit would help along with a supplement like ZMA since both zinc and Mag. are needed for proper blood sugar reg. In addition, chromium, alpha lipoic acid and fish oil help to improve glucose tolerance. I hope this info helps, keep us updated on your status. Take care.

Do you weep when you watch movies about Insulin? Or do you take long walks on the beach with Insulin?

If so, you are probably insulin sensitive.

Ok, that was stupid. Forget that you read it.

Your replies were really appreciated; but I just discovered that the secretary at the MDS clinic made an error in her calculation because up here in Canada all readings are mmol/L and my reading is 4.2; she multiplied by the cholesterol factor which is 28.9 and should have used 18. so the good news is that my Glucose fasat number is 76. Thanks everyone.

Glad to hear the good news.

That being said, you are obviously a fairly sensitive guy (pansy!). The standard fasting ranges are 70-110 so you are on the low side. Good job

Man, being in Canada can give you diabetes? You Canucks have it rough!
