Concert Experiences?

Colin James was actually really, really good and Jeff Healey was too, as well as being a super nice guy. I think I’m showing my age now.

I saw Jeff Healey back in the late 80’s at some small place in Toronto, it was upstairs over a restaurant, I think. I wanted to ask him why he plays his guitar flat on his lap, but never got to talk to him. If you know the story, PM me. I never saw anybody’s fingers move like that.

I saw him early 90’s at Front 54 in Thorold, Ontario. Had a friend in a band that opened for everyone. Never thought to ask him at the time about his unique style so no story. Now, I do have a few stories about some others. The good old days:)

best- original deep purple, pink floyd, zep, stones, many more just not the best.worst robin trower

Red Hot Chili Peppers at the Tommy Hilfiger theatre at Jones Beach 3(?) years ago. Its an outdoor theatre, nice summer night, two lesbians making out in front of us (I shit you not) and an amazing playlist.

Fuck, I was sober and it was fucking amazing.

Oh, and some guy ran onstage and started dancing with Anthony Keides, and Anthony went right along with it like nothing happened. It was awesome. Then, he got pummeled by security 4 seconds later. That was even more awesome.

Forgot to add in was Pink Floyd on their last tour in 94 I believe. Saw it at the CNE in Toronto and was just simply amazing.

Nearly all the shows I went to in the early to mid 90s were in the detroit area. Lots of good memories from there.

A show I definately wished I would of been at was the Metallica/GNR while Metallica was on their black tour.

Best Musically: Phil Keaggy doing a solo acoustic show

Best for energy and fun: probably the Dropkick Murphys

I’ve been lucky enough to see many bands.

The best:
Metallica- 1994…before they plummeted into utter disappointment…

Front row to see Plant and Page, Concord CA- possibly 96 (shame on me for not remembering the year…it was many beers ago)

Pink Floyd- Division Bell tour…no Roger Waters, but still a dream come true- 94

Kings of Leon- Fillmore San Francisco 2005

Jesus & Mary Chain- reunited! Coachella 2007

Sonic Youth- Coachella 2007

I also had the pleasure of seeing Pantera in the Dimebag days.

The Worst:

Guns N Roses- I was 14ish…1989 Costa Mesa CA…, Axl threw a tirade, flipped off the crowd and never returned…only half hour into the set.

The White Stripes- Bill Graham Auditorium SF CA…they played 20 minutes, something happened (meg had her period?) never came back.

RHCP- Coachella CA 2007…I think I was just expecting alot more from these veterans, Frusciante was golden…the rest were totally lackluster.

Thats all I can think of for the time being. All three of my worst list are great bands, they just had a bad gig. I’d see any of them again.

The Extreme Steel tour in 2001 at the Tacoma Dome with Morbid Angel, Static X, Pantera and Slayer.

Second that; a good friend of mine and I talk about that show often. Too bad Axl is such an asshole and they had to split that tour up before it barely got off the ground. Of course, Lars is no picnic to be around either, it seems…

Slayer opening for Judas Priest. Slayer kinda sucked that night but Priest literally made my head explode. I’m now walking around headless. I got to see Vio-Lence open for Testament in a club. Sean Killian said “what’s up” to me after the show. That was the day I became a man.

Best Band Live: Muse.

I’ve seen something like 15-20 shows and they took the top spot 10 seconds in to the first of their shows that I’ve seen.

They are amazing; words can’t describe.

I’ve seen incubus a few times too…fantastic shows.

Both of these bands are good bands to be in the stands and just rock out to.

However, 2003 my buddy and I saw a Mudvayne/Bloodsimple show that was killer.

I saw Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Queen at (seperate) Knebworth gigs.

Seen more bands than I can mention at Glastonbury over the years.

Years ago I saw a couple of guys in a local band who sounded great and it was a real thrill to see them again years later playing to 125,000 people (Oasis).

Other great concerts - Pulp, Inspiral Carpets, Manic Street Preachers, Stone Roses (awesome).

Hey, when you saw the Stone Roses, was Mani playing bass?

Just wanted to add I’m going to check out the new U2 3D movie on an IMAX screen this Friday and I’m pretty pumped bout that. The reviews I’ve read on it are very good and they say you feel like you’re at the actual concert only better since you get the best angles. One reviewer said you want to tell the person in front of you to put their hands downs in some parts but it’s actually the movie.

First time I saw them was in '85 with their original line up so it was Pete Garner playing bass back then. I saw them again in 89/90 when their first album came out and Gary Mounfield was indeed playing.

Absolutely kick ass band.

Those that come to mind are:

*BLUE MAN GROUP!!! - I love these guys! Originally saw them in NYC and it was a fantastic show. They’re coming to Columbia next month and my friend, who manages a radio station in town, is getting me some kick ass tickets!!! Cant wait to get to Vegas to see them there
*Def Leppard
*Jimmy Buffet
*Shenia (sp?) Twain
*Brad Paisley
*Elton John
*Trans Syberian Orchestra
*So many Christian bands I couldnt even begin to name them.

I’ve seen Rob Zombie a new of times. Small stage at House of Blues or large scale set at Universal: always a great show.

Type O & Tool

Black Label Society really disappointed this last year with Zakk wanting to play piano for 30 minutes. Crowd aggression just died after that and never got it back.

There just aren’t good modern touring bands these days. It’s all about producing a hit single to sell on iTunes.

Best concert? Blind Melon opened for Guns n’ Roses. GNR hit the stage at midnight (supposed to start at 9:00PM) and played for 3 1/2 hours. I’m sorry to hear Moltov’s negative experience because they were really on their A game when I saw them.

Others? Primus on Halloween. Everyone dressed up and it was a freak show all the way around. Metallica a few times before Jason left. Van Halen back in the day. The Allman Brothers. BB King. Aerosmith. Page/Plant. Blue Man Group tore it up, too!

Band I really want to see live? One word: Rammstein

Modern bands touring? You should come and visit NW England. There are so many awesome bands playing small gigs every weekend that you wouldn’t know which way to turn.

Having said that - I’d go with getting to see Rammstein too.

Isn’t he playing with Primal Scream now?

I have been to quite a few great shows and festivals over the years. The best show I have ever seen was Tool this past August in my hometown. They put on such an unbelievable show. With all the lasers and shit I could have dropped some cid and been in heaven. I hope they will tour again.
