What should I specifically ask my doctor to test for when I get my blood test?
You should get a minimum of two tests, both around 8 AM.
Test for:
Total Test
Free/Available Test
SHBG
Prolactin
estradiol
DHEA
PSA
Cholesterol Profile (Trigs, LDL, HDL) If they can test for LDL particle size do this as well.
C-Reactive Protein
Fasting glucose and insulin levels are good surrogate markers of insulin resistance. You could also undergo an oral glucose tolerance test.
NOTE: These are all FASTING blood tests.
Get a prostrate exam from an MD who knows how do do it correctly. If done correctly it feels like you have to urinate during procedure.
Get a varicule scan. Too much blood in the balls = less testosterone.
Hope you have good insurance.

It’s not even the insurance. Most MDs simply refuse to authorize the level of hormonal tests that we would like. It’s expensive and they would rather just put you on high BP/cholesterol meds, prescribe an SSRI and send you on your way. The last MD I had even told me I should give up weights and start playing tennis. FAULT! (Obviously I switched doctors.)
I’m currently waiting for my latest results but I saw the list and besides the usual cholesterol crap my Doc only authorized Free T. Better than nothing I guess.
Good list though, thanks Bugs.

Wow, what a tool. I’d be scared about the other stuff he recommended.
Do not test for DHEA as it has a short half life and is pulsile. DHEA-s is the active form and has a long half life… a better test.
All that is needed is in one panel at LEF.org, much cheaper if out of pocket compared to from your doctor.
Thank you.
Can a doctor deny me these tests if I ask for them?
