Commonly F'd Up Phrases

Ever notice how many common phrases get messed up? The one that always kills me is:

“I could care less”… Usually that person is trying to say that they don’t care, but what they are really saying is that it is possible for them to care less…

If they didn’t care the proper thing to say is:

“I could NOT care less”

What phrases are you tired of hearing get f-ed up?

Moral Majority

This is wrong because it insinuates that those in the minority are immoral.

“Same Difference.”

WTF?!?!

“It’s the same difference.”

WHAT?!?! A difference is by definition of the word NOT the same. So you can not call it a difference at all if the two things are the same. The correct phrase is “It’s the same thing.”

Whoa! Never had anyone agree with me on that and here you and I post it at the exact same time.

Also, “To try and do something.”

The correct phrase is “to try to do something.”

It still is wrong because it’s two different things try and do are two different things you can try something or you can do it.

when people say “everythink” and “nothink”
instead of ending with '…thing"

read the damn dictionary people!!!

Howabout mixing up “loose” and “lose” around here?

I can’t believe how many people talk about “loosing” fat…

tight vs loose

find vs lose / win vs lose

Now get lost, ya bunch of bums!

Since this has kinda moved to words…

I CAN NOT STAND it when people say “Supposebly.” It’s SUPPOSEDLY. When was the last time anything was “supposeb?”

How about cause instead of because?

There is the word cause as in causing something to happen and the word because, as in I shortened because to cause because I am not well read.

There is no abbreviation or contraction of because people.

I’m sure “try to do” is perfectly correct, as it describes an attempt at an action. Now, this action has not yet come to its conclusion, and therefore it is not known at the time the phrase is used whether or not the attempted action has been done or hasn’t been done. I don’t see a contradiction in the wording.

“Try and do” on the other hand describes what you said. One cannot BOTH try and do at the same time. The trying must come first, and then as a result, the action can possibly be done. But if you say it at the same time, it means you just did, without any trying involved.

Whatever, I think we’re looking too much into this stupid phrase anyway.

“I need to get a prostrate exam.”

It’s an examination of the PROSTATE not prostrate.

Also…

When someone asks “Do you have the time?”

Then I say “Yes.”

Then they look at me all weird and say “Well?!?” assuming I’m going to tell them the time when all they asked was if I had the not, not what time it was.

Or during class someone asks for a “piece of paper.” I then proceed to tear off a corner of a SHEET of paper and they are like “what the hell!!??”

looks like i’m not the only annoying pedant.

small joke-
what is the collective noun for pedants?

i don’t know either, but by damn, you’d better get it right!

My all time favorite: ‘He is bigger then you’

That’s right.
Do, or do not. There is no try.

Much like vroom’s pet peave,

I can’t stand when people write “your” instead of “you’re”

It’s petty, but it bugs me.

The other phrase that gets my goat.

“It is what it is…”

That phrase is being used more and more lately to dismiss a problem rather than actively search for a solution.

Then, lastly, the latest phrase that bugs me is…

“That’s hot”

GAINER

“Wherever you go, there you are.”

WTF???

Your
You’re

It’s
Its

Too
To

Lose
Loose

Effect
Affect

Irregardless. There is no irregardless, but you hear people say this. It’s just regardless.

In the same vein… how about there/their/they’re?
