It was a bad summer for me. After dropping 40+ pounds I hurt my back - bulging disc pinched sciatic nerve. Ouch. After injections in the spine the pain went away, but I had to stop lifting. As I was ready to get back at it I had to get 2 surgeries for bladder cancer.
Ok, getting a little flabby, but finally ready to get back at it. No, my friggin’ Crohn’s Disease hits and I get surgery on my gut. So, no gym for fear of hernia. Ok, finally back at it, although avoiding going heavy still because of the abdominal surgery hernia fear. I put about 20 back on all told. I am having troubles getting focused on diet and exercise and I do still have a bit of fear about my back. Anyone come back from serious bullshit and have tips? THANKS ALL.
Looks like your future is rosy, because you’ve used up all the bad luck for at least 3 lifetimes!
Keep your diet in check, that’s the first step to good health. Eating very clean may also be a factor in cancer prevention, that should be enough motivation in itself.
Get back in the gym and start off light and easy. Don’t expect to do what you used to do. You certainly don’t want to cripple yourself.
What were the physician’s recommendations about lifting? If he says none at all, perhaps you want to see an orthopaedist with a concentration in sports medicine, who actually understands about spinal loads and postural compensation.
I had brain surgery in February. I just got back to work and back into the gym. It feels good to have my life back.
Thanks Momma. I am going light and if I do lift heavier I try to avoid movements that recruit my abs. However my back needs a strong belly. Argh! The surgeon said 8wks before lifting. Of course I went back after 5. I seem to be doing ok. I am doing DLs at a measley 125 out of fear or hernia, but I do them circuit style.
My ortho is anti-free weight, but he is good, so I am sticking with him for now.
The hard part about diet is not eating like i was when I was going at it hard. I can’t get a caloric deficit now and stay satisfied.
Glad to hear you are feeling better. How long did it take you to get back in the swing of things?

Wow, I’ve been sick in bed for two weeks and I’m still weak as a kitten, but suddenly I don’t feel so bad about my circumstances!
Anyway, best of luck to the OP and to Yo Mama on getting all healed up and back at it. Remember to train smart and don’t let that ego get in the way. We want you training; not injured!
Keep the faith man! Look up my old posts on my situation. 3-4 years of shit sandwich and eating crow, back surgery, major f**ked up nerves in neck, both arms/hands burning/ fried nerves, vertigo, dizziness, weakness, confusion, and eventually anxiety attacks/adrenal fatigue from 3 years of this shit.
You will find what you can/cannot do and will recover. It takes time though. I have managed to get back into some boxing/kick boxing striking on heavy bag again and lifting. A year ago, I thought I was going to die from the pain. ENDURE!
