College Football

I think Spike made some good points. I am also frustrated about exclusion from BCS games because of bowl tie-ins.

I also think Utah was screwed over when they had to play Pitt. They should have played Auburn. Now before I get flamed, I want everyone to know that I think that Auburn was a stronger team and would have won that game. I just feel short-changed because we finally busted the BCS but didn’t get to see if we could be successful against a great team.

On the other hand, I can see the points made by eic and Rainjack. That constant success has built up great power and tradition in the BCS conferences. It is virtually impossible to argue that they aren’t any good.

I just wish the system would change. There needs to be a playoff because all of the decent teams have a chance of beating each other, even if that chance is very small.

I think a playoff system would go a long long way to bringing some sort of parity to D-1 football. I refuse to call D-1 “FBS” because that is nothing but bullshit PC crap.

I also think that if we ever get a playoff system for D-1, you will see a lot of talent staying closer to home, and a lot of the traditionally strong programs will weaken. Texas, Florida and California schools will become very strong, and the Michigans, Notre Dames and Nebraska’s will fade into obscurity.

I mean, why would a Texas kid want to go to school clear across the country if the have a realistic chance of staying home and making the playoffs?

The bowl sponsorships are all that’s stopping a playoff. Too much money exchanging hands.

Keep the the big BCS Bowls ust like they are now, but get some of the lesser the bowl sponsors to back each round of the playoff games.

And for the Meineke Car Care Bowls - they can still have the bowl with non-playoff teams.

Seems to me that there would be more money in a playoff system than they currently make. A playoff system would drive bowl game ratings through the roof.

I think under this type of program you can also give the bowls a bit more freedom to pick regional interests. Maybe break up the playoffs into regional brackets like basketball and baseball. I know can think of atleast 1 example of a pre-Christmas bowl that was poorly attended by TCU and nother by Tech, and I remember the second year of the Ft. Worth bowl was just abysmal with 2 very far away 6-5 teams and horrible weather that kept the locals away.

Random question:

I would consider myself a college football newb but a big NFL fan. I was wondering, how good is Matt Grothe? Does he have a shot at the NFL?

ESPN will be broadcasting “College Game Day” from Lubbock tomorrow morning, dumbing down the collective football IQ of the entire region.

God I hate Lee Corso.

I didn’t even know there was a Ft.Worth bowl. I know there is a Armed Forces Bowl…is that the same bowl game?

Yes,
It has changed sponsorships atleast once. Bell helicopter has done a much better job of marketing it as the Armed Forces bowl than Plains Capital did as the Fort Worth bowl. It was originally CUSA v. Big 12. The idea was TCU/UH vs. Tech/Aggie/OSU etc. That never quite materialized. The big 12 only sent a team once.

I often refer to these newer bowls by their city since I can’t keep up with the sponsorship changes. TCU has played in Houston 3 times this decade. It has changed stadiums once and has had a different sponsor each time.

I could not agree more with you on that one, I hate that damn publicity stunt of his gameday “pick” considering he has been wrong god only knows how many times.

Ah I see…didn’t realize Bell was sponsoring. I have relatives that retired from Bell.

Man,I haven’t seriously kept up with TCU football in a while…and only briefly while Drew Coleman was there…he’s from my old neighboorhood. I see Stephen Hodge and Nick Sanders are doing good…they’re from my “neck of the woods” as well.

Coleman was a good one. I think he’s in the NFL. Sanders has also been a solid contributor. Hodge is a man among boys. He’s a linebacker’s body/mentality playing at safety. We got 2nd row tix earlier this year, got to sit right behind the DB’s section of the bench, and his physique is freaky, even by D1 standards. He’s also a terror on coverage teams, and even runs back kicks.

Coleman is still with the NY Jets…don’t know if he’s actually playing or not. Oh,and Hodge comes from a family of gifted athletes.

Every time he picks Oklahoma I know we’re fucked.

Everytime he picks a team that I think will win it is never a good sight, especially when he picks my team. His prediction for the OU/WVU Fiesta Bowl last year I’m sure made you pull your hair out after that game, I just can’t stand the guy. I don’t mind Herb or Fowler but Corso I could do without.

We’re down 11. 1 quarter left. The future is still bright now that we’ve removed their starting quarterback and they had to put in a true freshman. Their offense hasn’t moved since. Now its up to our O.

Glad the Apps made Friday night on ESPN 2 sort of intersting. Of course, 1AA is nowhere near the excitment of all the Div 1 stuff this season.

Dammit/.

GO GATORS!!!

Already 49-3 with 7 minutes left against Georgia.

Gators are on their way to the SEC Championship game against Alabama and then the BCS game against…Texas? Texas Tech? Penn State? USC? Anyone else? Bring it!!!
