interesting, this post might determine if this is combat sports board OR a MMA only board.
so crhis bryd, who started out as a middle weight, but ended up a heavyweight champion, at age 37 has managed to shave off some 25lbs, and make light heavyweight(175). i saw some pics and video on espn.com, he looks in shape, and at 6’1.5" he has a crazy reach , if you remember he often had equal or greater reach than many of the much taller heavyweights he fought.
he will be the first heavy to go down two weight classes and be a serious contender, unless you count RJJ, who only was a “token” heavyweight for one bout before going back down.
i think his size, the durability he will bring from years and years of hitting AND getting hit by giant heavyweights, and his elusive, counterpunching style will make him a nightmare matchup for manyh of the top LHW’s out there. there are a lot of ageing big name fighters, (hopkins, joe cal., RJJ) that i would pay to see him in the ring with.
George looks tough, impressive in his last fight. I’ve gotta pull for byrd, but I think father time will come knocking soon. This is kind of a wait and see, did he keep his heavyweight chin, can he move at a light heavy pace??
well said donut, and no-gi, those are good questions. the chin, i dont know, i could give you a long sermon on how i feel about the myth of “good-chins” vs “glass-chins” that i am somewhat famous for on other boxing specific boards, but i will not get into that here.
as far as LHW pace, i think he does fine, he is a slick counter puncher, with an awkward defensive style. he makes other fighters fight at his past for the most part, unlesshis opponent just plain physically overpowers him(think ike ikabuchi, and Wlad). this wont happen as much in the light heavies, where he as a large frame for that division.
on that note, this may deserve another thread, but what about david haye? any thoughts on his impact if any in the heavyweight division?(besides that he is an arrogant jerk).
i saw a video of him ambushing Wladimir at a charity event, what a tool, i wanted klit sucker punch him and send him tumbling down the stairs they were on so bad.

Actually, I’d be interested to hear your theory. Either in here or in a new thread.

The video was hysterical. Wlad had this big shitting grin on his face the whole time. After Haye had his little hissy fit Wlad was off to drive to his mansion in his Ferrari and bang a supermodel.

LOL.
Pathetically, however, I no longer follow heavyweights and have no inkling what the hell you guys are talking about.

well, in a peanutshell, the heavies are oft trashed these days, as it seems no matter how hyped a fighter is, they all seem to be very beatable(KTFO) at some time or another.
in todays world of superheavyweights, ther is no such thing as a good chin. a 6’4"-6’7" 230-260lb fighter, if they are in any sort of fighting condition and know how to throw a punch, can knock pretty much anybody out at any given time, if they land one good shot.
its has nothing to do with “heart” or who has an “iron beard”, or a “granite chin”, it is simple physics. and i am sorry, even the best fighters get hit every now and then. and when that much mass and force is behind one of those shots, chances are the other guy can go down.
seems if a top heavyweight today has a couple of knockout losses on his resume, then they are bums with glass jaws. just not true. BIG guys punch BIG. it is a different world out there today. ANYBODY can get caught.
hark back to the golden days of Joe Frazier, Ali, Marciano, Lewis, all those guys would get smashed eventually if they fought a lot of the top super heavyweights that are otu there today. it would be like heavyweights verses light heavyweights.

I agree. Ring generalship is alot more important nowadays… although I’m not really impressed with anyone in that regard either. Even Klitscho, talented as he is, sometimes seems like his head isn’t in the game (i’m thinking that last fight where he never dropped the straight right.)
Oh I don’t know about that. Those guys all weighed in heavy enough to knock out anyone else… especially with the amount of force that Marciano and Frazier could bring to bear.
And Ali would be a lot faster than many of the chumps out there… I think it would be evenly matched. The guys you mentioned are legends… and in my opinion, far more talented than anyone except KLlitscho in the HW division.
