Children, Asthma, and Exercise

Is there any decent literature linking exercise to controlling asthma in children or adults?

I have a nephew that is in the 4th grade that is becoming overweight. His asthma seems to be progressively getting worse. Does anyone have any suggestions on any exercises that I can make him do or a good website that has that information?

DO A search on google and you will find articles that link obesity to asthma.

visit a website called www.watercure2.com. If your nephew follows the VERY simple guidelines on intake of water and salt, it will change his life. It sure changed mine!

Healthy fats very important. Try Dr. Andrew Weil. Have him start breathe meditation. It is very effective in helping you control it when it is necessary then. It sounds pretty tree hugger however it is very effective. Also as I said healthy fats very important. Junk food is really bad on asthmatics. Especially ice creams and other milk based treats… Does he have excercise induced or allergy induced or wheezing cause he is hauling a small child around his waist?

Excess carbs and junk “food” is really, really bad on asthmatics. Plus I notice that when my BF% rises above 12% I begin having problems with my asthma.

Martial Arts training, boxing (especially heavy bag training) have all helped in reducing my asthma to practically nil. Oh and keeping my BF% to below 12. And the whole "water cure" program of water/sea salt is helping, too (with thanks to Mike Friedman!).

Try him on a low carb diet it helped my asthma and my fat.

Hey, Patricia.

I was wondering how the water/salt thing was going for you. I’m glad it’s helping. Remember that if you exercise a lot and drink coffee or take any type of diuretic, you must up your water intake to help accomodate for the increased water loss.

Hey Mike F.! Well, thanks to you, I am now very aware of my water intake and have properly increased my intake. THANKS!

I had childhood asthma. Kids can often outgrow the worst of the symptoms. Playing wind instruments (sax, trumpet, etc) and lots of cardio exercise (soccer, basketball, etc) were key activities for me in controlling asthma as a kid. As an adult cardio fitness remains my chief means of control - as long as I keep it up asthma almost never bothers me. Second hand cigarrette smoke or heavy air pollution (on those hot summer days) is the notable exception…
