Chicago Eating

I am going to Chicage on business next week.
I’ll be staying in Oak Brook and am hoping someone out there can point me towards a few good places for healthy food and also a grocery store…
Anyone…Anyone…Buhler…

Are you staying at a hotel?

There may be a shopping/dining near the hotel.

I am at the Laquinta Inn at Oakbrook Terrace. I was hoping for some inside info on grocery stores and good places for healthy food in Oak Brook.

Not to hijack your thread, but (ok, yes I’m hijacking) what about good gyms in chicago. I’ll be going up there for school at the end of this month. I’ll be in North Chicago.

Oak Brook is a fairly large suburb of Chicago, but you will still be about 30 min to an hour away from Chicago proper depending on the time of day.

Chicago is not known for its healthy cuisine. We’re known for deep dish pizza and hot dogs. That being said, there are alot of good restraunts in the Oak Brook area. When you say you are looking for “healthy” restraunts, do you have something in mind? There are pleanty of grocery stores in driving disttance from where you are staying.

If you are a little more specific with what you are looking for, I can help you out better with some specific restraunts to try.

When you say you will be in North Chicago are you going to be in the town of North Chicago or will you just be in the Northern Chicago area? What town are you specifically going to be in?

LOL man I say enjoy Chicago and the food for a few days man thats one of the reasons I go there pizza etc even have a great Thai place little hole in the wall honestly its the closet thing ive had to the street vendors in actual Thailand.

I say let it loose a few days and come back strong on the diet after enjoying one of the best things Chicago has to offer.

I need to try to stay on plan if possible. Letting loose for a few days for me would likely result in me not getting back on the diet at all and that would be bad for me.
In answer to more specifics about what I’m looking for, I guess that a Whole Foods Market or something similar would be good to stock my fridge in the hotel. I would also like a few restaurants where I can get something that isn’t fried and isn’t pizza.

Well, as far as eating out goes try the following: Wildfire Steak House, Maggiano’s Little Italy, Braxton Seafood Grill, The Clubhouse, The Cheesecake Factory. The Clubhouse is American style and the Cheesecake Factory has sandwiches and smaller menue items. You will be right around Oak Brook Center Mall so if you need to hit a GNC there should be one there.

There is a Whole Foods market in Clarendon Hills. That is about a 10 to 15 min drive. The standard grocery stores in northern Illinois are Dominicks and Jewel. You should have one of those within walking distance of your hotel.

If you like pizza, take one night and get yourself Lou Malnati’s, Giordano’s or Gino’s East pizza.

If you have the opportunity, go to Chicago and check out things in the city. There is always something going on in the summertime.

There is a PowerHouse Gym in Waukegan and a Golds Gym in Gurnee. I think a 24 hour fitness in Libertyville.

The PowerHouse and Golds are about as hardcore as it gets in this area.

Thai Bxr gave you a few places to check out…I would add California Pizza Kitchen in OB, along with The Clubhouse…a little pricey, but the food is excellent. It is near the OB Mall. You won’t find the types of restaurants that you would downtown…but there’s enough there to keep you full…and eating right.

Where you will be located? I could steer to a few…

I used to work in Oakbrook.

There is a Wild Oats just SE of the mall…
500 E Ogden Ave # A, Hinsdale, IL

For gyms, I used to go to the X-Sport in Lombard, gym is decent and pretty close to you.

205 W Roosevelt Rd, Lombard, IL

Thanks. Sorry it took so long. I’ve been working.

Alright. The city of North Chicago is an absolute hole. I am assuming that you will be at the Navy Base or Abbott Labs. Either way, I think your best bet is the YMCA in Waukegan. It has two free weight rooms, an indoor running track, a seperate nautalus room that everyone else works out in and two full size basketball courts. The free weight rooms are almost never used.

The PoweHouse gym in Waukegan is also a semi hardcore gym. If you are at Abbott Labs you will be close to this one. If you are at the Navy base you will be hell and gone from everything.

Do not go to the Golds Gym in Gurnee. Gurnee is a huge community with a bunch of wannabe fitness athletes. You should sooner hit yourself in the head with a hammer then go to this place. The gym is nice but you will be so pissed off by the members you will quit in the first week.

Where are you going to be staying in North Chicago? I grew up in this area and used to bounce around the North Cicago/Waukegan area so I can give you advice on whatever you might need. Let me know what type of questions you have and I would be happy to help if I can.

I’ll be going to school at Rosalind Franklin University, and I’ll be living in the on campus apartments. So I’ll be right by the navy base. So that means the Y? Thanks man.

I live about 20 minutes from Oak Brook. Check out the XSport GYM on ELSTON. GO TO THE ELSTON gym, the other ones have a rep of being “pretty-boy” gyms. The Elston Xsport used to be powerhouse elston, so there are still a lot of hardcore guys that go there. Xsport has a free week-long trial membership, which sounds right for someone who is just gonna be in town for a while.

woooo, thanks man, I work out there. Golds is a yuppie haven, but one can still have a damn righteous work out there. The people leave you alone if are just doing your thing and the place has a huge free weight selection for the area, about 2x what powerhouse has.

I have no opinion of the Y in Wauktown, I’ve never been there.
