Cheap Plates for Oly Lifting

I’ve been trying to get a set of plates to use for the snatch and clean n jerk. Cheapest I found was from Iron Woody’s.

Anybody familiar with this brand and anybody have any recommendations?

I don’t know anything about those plates, but if you read the disclaimer, it says they are just rubber coated metal plates and should not be dropped like regular bumpers. I don’t know what that means, but that’s the best price I’ve seen. I suppose you could rig up a makeshift platform that would allow you to actually drop the bar.

The only other bumpers I’ve found that were decently priced where these:

I don’t own those myself but thought about getting some. If you compare pricing, the Pendlay bumpers sell for $149 for a pair of 45s and that includes shipping. The Iron Woody plates will cost you $132 once you add in the shipping, and there’s still the question of whether or not you can drop them like regular bumpers. Personally, I’d spend the extra $20 (not even) and get some real bumpers.

Well, really you can drop any set of plates and bar, it just depends on how much floor/equipment damage you’re willing to put up with.
I’d spend the extra money and get the bumpers though, especially if shipping is included. Weights are a bitch to ship usually.
If you’re worried about price, get a few bumpers and then enough metal plates to give a decent amount of weight.

Sure you can drop any type of plate, but you’ll ruin your bar and your floor, no matter if you have rubber or not. You’ll also likely break the plates after enough drops. The Iron Woody website even states that these plates are not bumpers, therefore they are NOT meant to be dropped.

Get real bumpers, I suggest Pendlays or Wright Rubber, that are relatively inexpensive if you can’t afford the higher priced bumpers. Just keep in mind that you get what you pay for, and be prepared for the possibility that these low cost bumpers may not last as long as WerkSan, Mavrik, or Eleiko bumpers.

I think I’m gonna go with some cheaper ones. Any idea where to get a oly bar too?

Everything is so fucking expensive, it makes me want to cry.

If you cant afford to get the real deal, dont even bother. A cheap bar isnt worth its weight in sand. The back bone of an entire home gym is the bar. If something good is “too expensive” than your priorities aren’t in order or you need to shut up and save…

I lift with a club but I’ve also been looking to buy some stuff for home use. I don’t see a problem with buying less expensive stuff for home use if you have access to better equipment on a regular basis. Here’s a bar that I was looking to put on my Christmas wish list. Apparently, it’s just like the Pendlay but without the chrome:

Such malice haha. My priorities are definitely in order, School first and lifting after. I just don’t have the kind of money for a 700-900 bar right now.

And that is definitely reasonable to me. I’m just wondering about what that other guy said about cheap bars. he’s definitely right but I wonder if anybody has tried this bar?

Here’s the thing. My guess is that you’re going to continue with the sport for several years or at least as long as you can, right? Buy a cheap but usable bar now. Later, when you have more money, buy a better bar and use the old bar for squats and deadlifts and save your good bar for just OLing. Having two bars in your gym can be very handy. Also, I’m not sure how proficient you are in the lifts, but if you’re still somewhat in the learning stage, the quality of your bar will not be the limiting factor.

I don’t know how much you have to spend, but there are good inexpensive bars and bumpers out there that are better than those plates you looked at with Iron Woody. Look at MuscleDriver USA and Wright Rubber.

You can probably get what you need for about $500-$700 and might be able to score free shipping. Figure what you can spend and do some research. There are good deals out there. Look at some of the Crossfit stuff (even though you would have to get lb plates), they seem to have really good deals.

keep your eye on craigslist. I found an entire package of pendlay plates and bar for 300$ It’s potluck but it happens.

I’ve been looking at this place. In terms of brand new gear they seem reasonably priced.

Prices look good but if you go through the checkout there is a disclaimer that says they will email you the cost of shipping after you purchase the items!!! Yeh right, gambling is fun but you will surely only be a loser in this scenario!!

That’s a bit off-putting.

Look up the wright rubber company. Best price going with a bar for around 400 i believe!!!

I’ve bought bumper plates cheap on ebay. Craiglist is a great idea, but you would need to be lucky.

Staley Training Systems has 45lb bumpers for 150 shipped. And sets for similarly reasonable prices.

Quite the contrary. We advertise the price without shipping cost so you know exactly what the plates cost minus shipping fees. Our shipping fees are charged at the prevailing shipping rates. If you would like a competitive shipping quote please contact us. You won’t be disappointed.

Do they ship out of USA?
