Dr. Mauro Di Pasquale recommends the same type of diet on metabolicdiet. I have been implementing this diet and it is unbelieveable at the results. I have gained 5 lbs of LBM the past month (I am 6’1" 215 now) and am down to 8% bodyfat. When I started to lessen my carbs and increased my fat (fish oil and flax seed oil) I have stayed in an anabolic state. It is incredible. My workout partner sees me everyday and he says I look a lot bigger. My energy now is through the roof. I use to always be tired and lethargic. If you guys want to get started without getting too complicated go with the T-Dawg diet in the FAQ section.
Thanks again; I’m definitely going to be giving it a shot this fall. I make a good guinea pig:) Also, as Sebastien mentioned, a good link to sample diets and/or information on the physiological premise for such a diet would be appreciated. JC- did you get this diet directly from Poliquin himself? Also, can one get by without all the seafood? I don’t tolerate it well at all. I’d much rather eat 4 lbs. of red meat a day…
cjack, I’m definitely interested in the Metabolic Diet, but the price for the book, $40, is kinda steep… do you think it’s worth it? Does it contain enough useful info (over T-mag articles) to justify the price?
Eric, Poliquin gets his whole diet philosophy from Dr. Mauro Di Pasquale. Dr. Di Pasquale’s website is metabolicdiet.com and the T-Dawg diet is something you might want to reference in the FAQ section.
No the ebook is not worth the price of $40 unless you are interested in why the diet works (the detailed physiology). You can get pretty much everything in the FAQ section here under diets clicking the T-Dawg diet or at metabolicdiet.com . TC and Chris Shugart modified it a little bit and I think it is better. You can also go to metabolicdiet.com and click on “bodybuilders” and you can get a very detailed description of how a bodybuilder should approach the diet. There is a e-book that you can download called the anabolic diet and you can actually download the majority of the book for free (at least the most important parts.)
no, i did not get the diet directly from poliquin, but my buddy brian trained with him for a week last year and got it then. as for me eating half the population of the indian ocean, its not mandatory. basically i got sick of chicken, steak, and beef, so recently ive been eating like 12 speices of fish, lots of buffalo for my red meat (which i actually find much tastier), and i will throw the occasional bird in there. oh and steamed veggies will become a delicacy. you will be eating veggies so often there’s really no time to steam them, so i just toss them mofos in the microwave and chow down. when i actually have time to steam them it tastes SOOO much better. good luck.
Yo E, I have to disagree with cjack that Chuck P. gets all of his dietary info from DiPasquale…I know he has, and may still from time to time, work with Dr. Serrano. Hit me on the e-mail or IM and I can give you some info on Serrano’s recommendations…I tried, with varied success, a plan just like JC#10’s late this Winter.
Were you using flax oil on your salads? Also, I’m still trying to do a little math and figure out the nutrient ratios. It sounds like about 2g/lb in protein, maybe 50g or so of carbs (not including post-workout), and the rest in fat? I hate math.
Thanks for the link. I don’t see a real great correlation between the T-Dawg diet and Poliquin’s recommendations, though. Sure, they’re both low carb for most days with one carb-up per week, but the protein intake is much different. Poliquin recommends 1.5-2g/lb, while the T-Dawg sticks with .6-.8g/lb. Obviously, much of the physiology of the body’s response to higher fat diets is similar, but I don’t recall ever hearing from anyone here who has used the T-Dawg diet for mass gain.
Okay, I took my laptop to work with me today and played around with your sample diet to figure out some tentative macros based on your stats. Here’s what I came up with:
Low-Carb days: 19-20 calories/lb. bw, 2g protein/lb. (40%), .85g fat/lb. (39%), 1g carb/lb. (21%-80g post-training, 100g from greens, incidentals). The carb intake seemed a little high, but it was tough to estimate with veggies.
Carb-up day: 19-20 calories/lb., 1g protein/lb., .65g fat/lb., 2.35g carbs/lb. I wasn’t sure if you were supposed to avoid higher fat protein sources like salmon and red meat on these days?
How did I do? I even put together a sample diet of my own based on these recommendations, and it looked very manageable. I’m planning to go 40P-30F-30C for the next few weeks anyway, so it should be a less painful transition this fall.
Do you use as much glutamine each day as Poliquin recommends?
I’d love to bounce a sample diet off of you if you have the time to check it out. If you’d be willing, you can contact me through my homepage at:
This is truly a great thread. Arizona could do some damage this year if Plummer is properly conditioned…rumor has it that T. Jones bulked up too in the off-season. Anyway…on the subject of eggs. Does it really make that much difference if you use part whites/1 whole egg? Why can’t you just use all whole eggs, provided you keep carbs low? In Poliquin’s Ultimate Workout article he recommends 4 poached eggs as part of the breakfast meal. Also, did those of you who followed this diet use BCAA’s/glutamine pre-workout? Overall, this is very similar to what I’m doing right now, only I’m doing 5-6 meals instead of 8. I store fat predominantly in the midsection as well, and I am one of the few that can function quite well on 50 g. carbs/day. I’d like to ask the question again about the cashews and provolone…is this from CP or just your own preference? I normally use walnuts/almonds or even macadamia nuts sometimes. Another question: what is the science behind Don Alessi saying to eat red meat only once a day and only on certain days?
i got the idea of cashews and provolone cheese from my buddy who trained with poliquin, so i am assuming they are from chuckie himself. eric, that sounds about right, its hard to estimate with veggies though, and i think when i calculated the protein intake, its around 2grams per pound, maybe a little under and also yes, i take lots of glutamine. i take it pre, during, and post workout. and no, i dont use flax in my salads. as for the red meat once a day, that was just an example, i eat it minimum of once a day. and CRESSY, on the carb days, its still ok to have the fat like red meats and salmon. ok fellas hopefully i answered all your questions.
speaking of boston, that guy is a FREAK. he’s built like a freaking LB (6’4 240ish) and runs the 40 under 4.3. how would you like to be a 5’8 CB trying to tackle him in the open field?
I have two questions for you. What kind of workout were you doing on this (program and cardio) and what brand of fish oil did you use (with how much EPA/DHA)? Thanks
as for programs, ive done both high and low volume. ive done EDT, poliquins 2,1,1,1 dropset, a workout that i will call a “cousin” of GVT 2000, and i am about to finish up another strenght phase. as for the fish oils, i use pretty much whatever the store has, with an EPA of 360mg and a DHA of 240. for cardio, i box for about 25-30 minutes, twice a week.
i believe boston is only about 6 foot. Regaurding lo-carb diets, I always see coaches highley against low carb diets for athletes. but i guess this works fine with boston. I will be looking to try this in the future, possibly after i finish T-dawg, then massive eating if my body fat is at the desireable level. Currently im keeping my carbs about 100\40, but using berardi’s during\post workout drinks. Do u think these workout drinks w\35 grams of dextrose each, will hurt my progress? Im melting down right now, i feel the during workout drink helps me in this workout.
I have to agree with Monty Ritchie and say that this is truly the most exciting and inspiring thread in quite a while. I was also wondering if this would all pertain to the info in Charles’ “Manly Weight Loss” book. Regardless, I’m definitely giving this approach a try! Oh yeah - JC how much glutamine were you taking before, during, and after workouts? Were you just mixing it into your water bottle or what? What other supplements did you use?
Good stuff. Regarding Boston, I remember Poliquin saying he was the most genetically gifted athlete with whom he’s ever worked. He adapts very quickly to a given training program, and tolerates carbs extremely well. I believe Poliquin said that he carbs up much more often than usual (I think it was every third or fourth day). On a side note, given his recent bust for possession of illegal narcotics and OUI, he seems to tolerate “other goodies” rather well too… Meanwhile, those of us who are genetically screwed continue to bust our asses for mediocre progress!
I read in the forum at charliefrancis.com that Boston reported to camp at 248 pounds and ran a 4.17 40 yard dash
JC#10, is the diet you described here the one you used to go from 15% to 8% body fat? It sure is a heck of a lot of calories!! It sounds (reads) more like a bulking diet! Amazing stuff! Thanks for posting.
