Changing of the Guards

I am in the gym to get stronger, I have and continue to do so. The byproduct of this is I am also bigger, that wasn’t the main goal but I am not complaining.

In reference to this comment.

“We all know utter morons who claim to be “street smart.” This phrase, much like FS, means nothing at all. It’s just a little piece of pride to cling onto when one realized that one is not actually smart. Are we supposed to be impressed that you know how to not get mugged? Doesn’t make you smart.”

I totally disagree street smarts at least in my opinion compares someone who has learned from experience to someone who is “educated”

example: I have a college degree in Chemistry, my father has no formal education outside of HS however I have watched him completely disassemble a 200k tractor, fix the shit that was broken and reassemble it without any formal training. Or build a deck, or polebarn starting from a pile of wood, a saw, level and some nails. The plan is all in his head.

I watch this shit in awe, that is my definition of Street smarts.
I couldnt even dream of being able to do that yet I have a degree, I must be smarter?

Sorry to derail the I am small but my function is huge thread.

First off, one needs to look at the composition of the “hypertrophy”. As you probably know, bber hypertrophy is ussually different than say for a o-lifter. That said every trainee has a level of lbm where gains in terms of physical performance are not only diminishing, but turn to losses.

Therefore if an idividual can perform a task with 19" arms as well as they could with 22", they are saving a bunch by not having to do with maintaining the extra 3".Look at the word TRAIN, what does it mean?? It means to teach, right??? An athlete is trying to teach their body (and mind) to perform tasks with more and more efficiency. Hypertrophy, plays a small part in that.[/quote]

My muscles grow because I feed them, not because of some mystical growth process. I train TO GET STRONGER. I eat TO GET BIGGER. The belief that my muscle mass is made up of something different than that of a powerlifter is largely bullshit unless someone follows my training and has biopsied my muscles. I am stronger now than I was when I was smaller. It take greater strength to build up my muscle mass. They are not independant processes. Why are people trying so hard to seperate the two?

If you are truly getting stronger, the only way you won’t gain more size is if you don’t eat more to support it. If that is the case, you will be LIMITED in how strong you can get if you never gain any muscle mass.
