Carb up? Neccesary w\ 190g of carbs a day?

TX! You totally misread me:-) I would never, ever break the rules of my mentor, JB. Well, at least not the most sacred of all! Let me show you what a meal plan looks like, then you can see for yourself that I’m not doing it up wrong! (grin) [br] All meals list the foods then the calories, protein (g), fat (g), and carbohydrate (g), respectively. Fiber grams are included in meal totals, but I’ll subtract them out at the end [br]
Meal One: 1 scoop low-carb Grow, CLA, and either natural peanut butter or walnuts (this used to be 1/2 cup oats)…276.0 calories, 27.0g pro, 15.5g fat 7.7g carbs[br]
During Training: 1 scoop VP2 (hydrolyzed whey), 25g dextrose/maltodextrin…203.0, 23.5, 0.5, 25.2[br]
Post-Training: same as above…203.0, 23.5, 0.5, 25.2[br]
Meal Two: Cottage Cheese, Low-Carb Grow, 1/2 cup oats, cauliflower, CLA…453.2, 57.8, 5.6, 45.2[br]
Meal Three: Ground Turkey Breast (1% fat), 1/2 slice Provolone, 1 tbsp Flax, broccoli, CLA…442.0, 53.3, 21.9, 7.8[br]
Meal Four: Atlantic Salmon, 1/2 slice Provolone, broccoli/cauliflower, 5g Fish Oil, CLA…420.5, 44.6, 21.0, 7.8[br]
Meal Five: (this would be the post-cardio meal) 6 Egg Whites, Extra-Lean Ground Beef, 1 tbsp Peanut Butter, broccoli/cauliflower, 5g Fish Oil, CLA…441.0, 56.8, 16.7, 12.4[br]
Meal Six: Cottage Cheese (fat-free), Low-Carb Grow, 15g Walnuts, 5g Fish Oil, CLA…407.8, 50.3, 17.3, 13.0[br]
Daily Totals: 2846.5 calories, 336.9g protein (50%), 98.9g fat (30%), 144.3g carbs (20%), 21.7g fiber. Net carbs: 122.6g. Carbs during/after training: 50g.[br]
So, TX, all P+F meals contain less than 10g of carbs, when fiber is subtracted, and those come from low to no GI/II carbs (i.e. veggies, nuts, etc.). All P+C meals contain 5 or less grams of fat. Now is that Classic JB, or what! (grin)[br]
Subtleties, TX? Yep, I’m all about the minutia, and I’m glad you are too. This is important to me as well. I see exactly what you’re saying about that pre-training meal/snack. I will go with the P+F tomorrow–actually I did today as well because I trained later in the day and my training was top-notch–and I’ll let you know how it goes.[br]
Do you think that it will matter that I consume the simple carbs + pre-digested protein at the onset of training? I don’t think that you utilize this “bracketing” technique, as you only consume your carbs immediately AFTER training, correct?[br]
Thanks again, TX, for all your wonderful help. You’re a charm. Bring on any and all questions and comments, please. (grin) [br]
T-Rock: Hella Strong and Confident

Sorry, Terry, about that last post being all jumbled up. I tried to throw in some breaks, but obviously my novice HTML ability–actually it was just a guess and I know nothing!–is non-existent.

Let me know if you would like me to re-post any of that. Thanks!

How could I have doubted you, Timbo? I am so ashamed. (hanging head & scuffing carpet with big toe on right foot)

Seriously, Timbo, that’s about as good as it gets. As I was studying your food log, I was thinking, “Heck, he coulda, shoulda told me that he keeps carbs to <10g in any given P+F meal, instead of going to all that effort,” but I’m sure others benefited from seeing how you structure your diet.

Re splitting the post-workout drink or saving it all for after, I keep my carbs so low that I’m almost forced to limit my carbs to post workout. I only do a half serving of Surge. This is an area in which I’m inclined to follow JB and deviate from Faigin’s approach/beliefs.

There’s a split camp on this one, though, and I do understand the argument that if you spike insulin, you’re using “sugar” substrates to fuel your workout instead of a higher ratio of fat to glycogen. But weight lifting is anarobic and glycogen dependent to begin with. And a one-hour workout can’t burn that much fat to begin with, compared to what you burn over the course of the day.

My final argument is that if you tend to run with low glycogen levels (and you do), the “lift” you get can’t help but allow you to work out harder than you would otherwise.

Having said that, I could make persuasive argument for saving your post-workout drink for the end of your workout. (grin) Bottom line, I’d stick with what you’re doing currently.

Terr…simply marvelous you are. You had me laughing pretty good with your “play on words” about hanging the head, etc. That was good.

JB's recommendation is similar to what I'm doing. That is, P+F in the hours before training. Then at the onset and during training--as well as immediately after--Surge or a similar concoction. So I guess I'm on the right path. It just seems odd having that plasma fat high and then getting an insulin response. But I think the last thing the body's going to do during a hella hard training session is start storing bodyfat! Highly unlikely, especially with the relatively small amount of nutrients I'm taking in.

I understand your logic behind just the post-workout 1/2 serving of Surge. But I'm not interested in keeping carbs that low or ketosis.

I'm compelled to ask more about Faigin's theories and recommendations, but I'll hold out for now (grin).

Since you've now given me the final "nod of approval," I'm even more confident than ever. I hate to bother JB with my diet plans since he's such a busy feller, but your counsel has become rather highly regarded, Terr. Thanks a bunch! This is not yet put to rest though, TX, it has only begun! I should probably start thinking about a possible refeed plan/schedule, as I would want to avoid any unplanned type of activity that would prove detrimental. Keep your eyes open and head up, T! By the way, sorry for always asking, asking, asking...I would really like to give a little back. So, holler if you've got anything (grin).

Timbo, from the bottom of my heart, you DO give back. Not only do you entertain me and the rest of the T-Nation, you share what you’ve learned with others. That’s as good as it gets in my book and ample reward for my exhausted fingers. (wink)

Terr, you’re truly one of a kind. A genuine, wonderful individual with outstanding zest and knowledge.

I am very glad to see that you not only see the humor and entertainment that I bring to the table, but the fact that you enjoy it brings me great happiness as well.

Thanks, TT, and for now, give those lil' fingers some recovery time! (grin)
