Whats up T Nation. Cardio is my weakest links… After 30the knee surgeries im only able to do upper body.
So i cant do much cardio to help loose or shed some weight. Eating clean is tuff all the time. Im a caterer. So that’s like owning a strip clup and saying to ur wife you dont look at the dancers. To much biking. eleptical.of stair climer blows my knees up with fluid.
Then im back getting them drained sometimes 60he cc out of each.
So im asking. Would quad setting with no rest be good to get my heart rate up and be sort of a poor mans cardio?
Buy a heart rate monitor, do your super sets (of any kind) while maintaining your heart rate goal for 20 to 30 minutes at a time, and this will by definition be the same thing as “steady state cardio”. Do the same thing with a higher heart rate target for 1 to 3 minutes by doing complexes of multiple exercises like swings, clean & press etc., rest until HR comes back down, do it again etc. and this will be the same as high intensity intervals. Imho.
Other options to consider: see if your gym has one of those machines where you use your arms instead of your legs to spin; hit a heavy bag or just shadow box for rounds.
Thanks punnyguy. I do a boxing class once a week. And as for super setting. Yes i do 4 different exercises in a row with minimal break i have is between. For example. Flat bench press.then incline dumdell press then skull crushers then trcept extentions. Then a brief rest …about how long it takes me to get back to the bench press
Glutes are major muscles. I guess you can find some exercises to activate them without knee stress. Adding them to pecs and back might save those 2 from over use problems. Doing abs work make me feel real warm maybe because i finish with them but you might use hanging knee raises, some with wraps again to be safe on the over use potential.
All the best.
I would think some complexes would help you out in your situation. Dan John has some articles on the benefits of complex training. Or some circuit weight training, but that is hard to do in a commercial gym.
