Canadian Powerlifting Nationals

Anyone who wants to watch some powerlifting April 9-13th can make the trip out to St.Catherines, Ontario. It’s only about 13 miles from the US border and an hour from Toronto. The CPU is the Canadian IPF affiliate, so all lifting will be drug testing and single ply. I just did the count and there will be 166 three lifters and 91 bench only.

Should be a great week! More info here niagarapowerlifting.org/UpcomingEvents/CPUNat/CPU2008.html

Cool, thanks. I live in St. Catharines. I may check it out.

I was hoping to make it out, but my baby sitting arrangements are up in the air so we’ll see.

The formating of the web page is all messed up when I open it. How do you know which day each flight is on? I only know one person lifting and he’s in the M1 110 class.

Also which day do you lift on?

Hope that link works better, all the flight/lifter lists are on the left side of the main page.
Who do you know, Tondo?

I lift Friday afternoon, 90kg Jr.

Let me know if that link doesn’t work.

Thanks that worked much better.

I used to train at the same gym as Tom Nicholls. Unfortunately I wasn’t interested in powerlifting then so I never took advantage of the situation.

What’s with Juniors and the 90kg class!! Jeez, 13 lifters in Junior! Good luck.

Hey just a question for those who have competed in this before…

Around what are people in the male, open, 75kg class benching?

What’s a respectable 3 lift total? Not necessarily a winner… but an average that would have you in the middle somewhere?

Thanks  And I’m hoping to make it over there to watch!

You need to hit a class 1 if you’re open to qualify for the three lift. The Bench only standards are at the bottom.

http://www.powerlifting.ca/cgi-bin/webdata_cpudb.pl?cgifunction=user

If you go here you can search and see what other people have done and compare. For example, last year there was a bench of 185 kilo’s (407 lbs) that I was able to find.

Cheers,

Pat

75KG Open hasn’t been a very dense class at our Nationals for the past few year. This year theres only one lifter and hes the one we routinely send to Worlds.

You might see him total something like 295-195-290=780KG

The Class 1 or the total you need to qualify for 75 Open is 570KG, possibly something like 215-140-215=570KG

Really? Tom’s a beast…its too bad you missed out on that opportunity, he’s one of the strongest and most respected powerlifters in Canada.

From what I know he won’t be putting up the huge numbers we’re used too this year, hes cut from a heavy 125 to 110KG this year. The guys I know that train with him in PEI said he’ll just lift what he has to, to win the class…which for Tom is probably less then his first attempts haha.

Yeah, it really was a missed opportunity, thanks for pointing that out. haha I never really got to know him, he may or may not remember me, but he was always a very friendly and helpful.

How’s this for another missed opportunity, I went to high school with Darren Weatherbie and I trained at the same gym as him when he started lifting.

I know Darren a bit better and I was hoping he would be lifting this year, but I didn’t see his name on the list.

I’ll be there! Its my chicks birthday but I talked her into going and hanging out for an hour or two. I live in St.Catharines, actually I could walk to the meet.

How’s this for a missed opportunity…Darren, Tom, John Mac and a few other Nationally ranked powerlifters all train together in a gym Tom built on his property. Haha

Darren has missed Nationals the last two years, untimely injuries basically. He squatted 777@90kg this year though, in the IPF not bad eh?

Quick question since you guys seem to be in tune with the Canadian powerlifting scene…

I would not be able to total enough to qualify for this. I doubt I will by next April even, though I think I’ll be a lot closer. However, I’d still like to try my hands at a competition… even if it’s just lower level beginners. I’m a student at University of Waterloo and they do not have a team.

Any idea where I could try it out at a lower level? I’m in Kitchener Waterloo, 23 years old. Feel free to PM me… I don’t want to jack this thread.

Thanks

I figured it must have been. I was going to train with him one night when I was back on PEI this past summer, but he broke a bone in his foot the night before and was at hospital for an X-Ray/wrapping.
