Can I Eat Eggs Raw?

Is it safe or no?

why? they make protein powders now.
this isn’t the day of the rocky flicks anymore

Why? Because eggs rule (if you really need an explanation as to WHY they are better than protein powders, you’d best be doing some more reading). Eating eggs raw allows you to mix them into shakes, making it easier to get protein and kcals into your diet.

I eat a dozen a day and haven’t noticed anything bad from it.

They say the chances of getting a contaminated egg is about 1 in 30,000 or so. You can further reduce your chances by not consuming eggs that have cracked shells or watery yolk/whites.

Some say raw eggs contain an enzyme (deactivated by cooking) that prevents your body from optimal absorption of the egg protein. Personally, I don’t notice dick between cooking them and eating them raw (except I have an easier time getting them down raw…I hate eating eggs).

As far as i have read:

Egg white- cook
Egg Yolk - Dont cook

Apparently the egg white needs to be cooked to be fully used by the body.

You can eat, or drink, them raw, but try to get them in with some veggies or something slow-digesting so that you get more out of them.

Yes, you will be fine

^I’m not sure what to make of your avatar… I’m just… confused here… why?

Raw egg white has a protein called avidin that interferes with the absorption of biotin, a B vitamin. Leaving the egg under hot running tap water for one minute is enough to solve this problem.

Do you hate miniature baby zebras? or Paris? or just the combo?

Really?

Yes

I prefer my eggs scrabbled or hard boiled, but go ahead and eat them raw.

You could just keep chugging them raw into you spew, that would be fun!

Actually, I’m going to try that. Who wants to post numbers and pictures as a compitition?
You need to drink as many raw eggs full until you spew or give up.

I have never had more than 6 in an hour, but over a day I have had up to two dozen.

contest starts tomorrow

O.k. what is the time limit? is it an all day thing? or is it over a 30 minute period? 1h?

Up to you, I just know I’ll be downing some raw eggs tomorrow.

My advice-Do not drink raw eggs.

Raw eggs are only 51% bio-available. Cooked eggs are 95% bio-available.

This means that if you drink 10 raw eggs, your body can absorb only 5 of them. If you drink 4 your body absorbs 2.

Now cooking them increases the protein absorbtion to a whoopin 95%. This is higher than in most foods. Some foods are absorbed better than others.

It is a common misconseption that heating the eggs will denature the protein. This not true, cooking changes the shape of the proteins in an egg when you cook the egg. In this case, denaturing the egg proteins changes the texture of the egg from slimy to firm.

Cooking changes the shape of proteins, but cooking doesn’t take away the amino acids found in them.

Cook your eggs, from an efficiency point of view it hold many advantages.

Now considering the theory of bio-availability, let me try to change your mind.

You will get the same amount of protein+nutrients if you-

  1. Drink 10 egs
  2. Eat 5 eggs.

So if you say you cant eat as many eggs cooked, the answer is you dont need to.

Digesting the raw egg will also put alot of stress on your digestive system.

Hope this helped.

But yes it is safe, you wont die.

good post

There seems to be little advantage in doing so;

less protein appears to be aborbed as noted http://jn.nutrition.org/cgi/content/full/128/10/1716

There is a small chance of illness by infection (Salmonella enteritidis)

egg contains conalbumin which binds to iron and avidin which binds to biotin.

You’d have to eat an awful lot of raw eggs over time to run the risk of a biotin deficiency though

On the upside it can be easier to consume a lot of eggs in drinks.

Your wrong. It’s 51.2% and 94.7%.
