Running around after all those kiddos will be training enough Wed-Fri. This is my prediction, worth what you paid.
It sounds like you don’t hate it. So, SCORE!

cant wait for the first urine story.
glad to know you didn’t run away pulling your hair out ![]()
congrats on the new job Cal! that’s great…have fun with the little monsters… (almost all children are monsters to me…)
Oh don’t, I don’t want any little accidents of that type. On my first day I had tears, some minor scrapes, a sick note, an asian girl who had to swim in shorts for religious reasons and a tummy ache. That’s enough to be getting on with!
So I survived my first week, and now I am a quarter way through my four day weekend.
Yesterday (Friday) I did some basic obstacle/agility courses with nursery (a mixed class of boys and girls, 3-4 years), transition (girls only, 4-5), year 1 (girls, 5-6) and 2 (girls 6-7). I made it slightly harder for each. The nursery loved it though they have rather short attention spans. Year 1 loved it so much they went back to their classroom chanting “more PE!” (which made me feel pretty good, I have to say). Year 2, who are normally quite a naughty class, enjoyed it as well. The only class I had problems with was Transition. I’m supposed to be accompanied until my criminal check comes back but the teacher had to take one girl to first aid as she had an allergy attack, and the girls were pretty naughty. One of them refused to take part and was generally disruptive so I had to make her sit on her own. I guess it can’t be perfect.
Years 5 and 6 had double lessons so I did netball with them. I must admit I don’t even know the rules properly (I have vague memories of it at school but being dyspraxic, I hated it. Fortunatley I can catch a lot better now than then - I wonder if my computer gaming has helped, lol). Both were pretty good and apparently year 5 said I was the best PE teacher ever. This might just be because I am less frightening than the one they had last year, who was a big butch Aussie rower who shouted a lot (according to my friend, the drama teacher).
It’s all a learning experience but so far I’ve enjoyed it. I think this is a job I can wake up to and not groan inwardly - I’m away from a desk, I get to move around during the day and I also get to be pretty creative. Plus, more spare time, which is awesome. (Less money, too, but you can’t have everything).
Anyway, I managed to get into the gym today. My strength has suffered a bit what with the injuries and the general being busy (my instructor course, and now school).
Standing Press:
2 x 10 x bar
1 x 5 x 25kg
1 x 5 x 27.5kg
1 x 5 x 30kg
Deadlifts
2 x 10 x bar
1 x 5 x 60kg (conventional)
1 x 5 x 60kg (sumo)
1 x 5 x 70kg (conventional)
1 x 5 x 70kg (sumo)
(Concentrating on form)
Dumbell Rows
2 x 8 x 26kg
Incline Dumbell Press
2 x 10 x 18kg
2 x Triset:
30kg Lat Pulldown x 10
20kg Straight Arm Pulldown x 10
40kg Scap Depressions x 10
Then…
Hyperextensions
2 x 20 (unweighted)
A shit load of stretching.
I need to try and work towards splits and stuff for when I have to start teaching gymnastics after Christmas. Me, who can’t do a headstand. Think I may start doing yoga again to help that.
Aw Cal best PE ever! too cool.
yay!!
glad you are enjoying it…aside from the acting up that kids do, I can’t imagine anything to not like. You also get the same holidays off as the kids, right?
Yes, which is awesome. And as it’s a private school, the holidays are a bit longer, too.
Of course, there are summer camps (held at the school) for the children which you can do, and get extra money for, so that’s something to think about.
Oh and if you have any tips for dealing with naughty ones, please pass them along. I’m rather clueless when it comes to children.
Today: AM, easy 5K run. PM, yoga class.
I haven’t done yoga for a long while, but I figured it would be good to try and do some now as I need to improve my flexibility and so forth (as I said yesterday). There’s a class tomorrow which I might do as well.
Incidentally, I was pretty sore from the weights yesterday…
Basically when they are acting up its for attention. Not sure how it works in school, but you can try a reminder of the rules, and then if they do it again, they get a timeout…
Yeah, timeouts is what seems to be standard at this school.
Hey, you deadlifted without saying your back hurt! Nice.
I’ve got nothing for you on naughty children except (1) better you than me and (2) good luck with that. ![]()
Seriously, though. I’m so happy it doesn’t suck.
congrats Cal! I bet you’re awesome with the kiddos :)!

Cheers. The one thing about this school is that it’s private (parents pay £12K to send their kids there) so whilst there are a few spoiled kids - the attention seeking kind - and a few with behavioural problems, the majority are nice girls. It’s not one of those London schools with metal detectors on the door, heh.
Today - another yoga class. My poor spine didn’t know what hit it but I think this is pretty good for me. I notice I’m quite weak in some of the positions - my postural muscles suck because I’m too used to slouching in chairs. I quit yoga previously because I got a job but now I’m free on Mondays I can do at least one class a week. I find it quite relaxing and nice, actually.
Went into town to get myself a nice tracksuit (Puma, yellow and black - the school colours) and some trainers (Nike, yellow and dark grey. Close enough). I’m not obliged to wear the school colours but I figured it wouldn’t hurt. I like yellow anyway. What I really need is one of those Kill Bill tracksuits. And a samurai sword. OK, maybe not the sword. I haven’t had any students come after me with a morning star yet so I’ll just make do with the whistle I ordered.
I’ll do some more weights tomorrow, I think. And maybe another class.
Today:
Superset:
Standing Press: Bar x 10, 25kg x 8, 27.5kg x 7, 30kg x 5
Rack Pull-ups: 7, 7, 5, 5
Felt really weak sauce. But onwards.
Bar x 10
Bar x 10
30kg x 10
40kg x 10
Did these to feel my shoulder. It didn’t like the 40kg. Too bad.
2 x 28kg x 5
That was all I had time for because I’d booked myself into a “Body Balance” class. This is an hour long class that mixes yoga, pilates and tai chi. Really I just needed a stretch and there’s no yoga class so thought I’d try it. It was alright. I think I prefer straight yoga but this can substitute on occassion.
I’m worried about my failing strength. Well, not worried. More like perplexed. I’ve got injuries, certainly, but I’m also wondering if it’s because I nixed a lot of supplements. Maybe I need to get back on the crearoids. What d’ya reckon? (I am still taking my fish oils, joint stuff and vit E when I remember. Which is most days. But I’m taking less than when I was working full time and went to work with my little pill box every day).
Visited my parents yesterday for my mother’s 80th birthday bash. (She’s actually 80 today but the restaurant they wanted was only available yesterday). She’s very frail now - she can’t walk more than a few steps and has real trouble outdoors. She seems to have lost confidence in her ability to move. Perhaps she was a bit overwhelmed by the occassion, or just having a bad day, but she was way worse than when I saw her in July.
She enjoyed the meal, though, and I think seeing her friends put her in good spirits.
I’m not sure she will have many more birthdays.
Off to school today. Friday’s my most intense day - and it’s likely to rain so I’ll have to come up with some creative stuff for the older girls to do in the gym. (And when I say gym, I mean hall. There’s no weights or anything. I might give 'em some circuits though!)
are you still diet mode? eating can play a big part in muscle maintenance…
plus you just went through some rough times too, the stress of work, a cold, your Mom. I wouldn’t sweat it. chalk it up to outside influences. when your head will be in the game again, it will make a difference.
I’m not in diet mode but my diet could certainly be better. Some bad habits have snuck back in, if I’m being honest (looking at you, empty Haagen Dazs carton). And you’re also right - there’s been a lot going on in my life, so mind hasn’t been on the training or the diet.
the Haagen Dazs whore - we all love to hate her. my particular flavor of evil is cookie dough. I can eat the whole thing in one sitting. Then a fall into a beautiful comatic sleep. the wonders of sugar overload.
