Cal's Big Log

wow, I’ve never seen a menu quite like that…accept at a fair maybe…sheesh!

Fried BUTTER!?!?! I just cannot wrap my head around that one.

Indeed, this menu absolutely is a symptom of why so many people here in the US are obese.

One of my friends ate a deep-fried Twinkie, but I stuck with ice cream for my treats.
Up in Scotland they tend to deep-fry various things - Mars Bars are typical - but one park does deep fried pizza. You can put salt and vinegar on it, too, as you would fish and chips. Disgusting!

Lord knows I love my junk food but fried anything just does not appeal to me. Except maybe the occasional handful of fries. I was so traumatized when I travelled the east coast drooling for fresh fish only to find that most placs just dumped it all in a vat of oil. the shame.

Fried oreos are actually very good. Of course you’d only want to eat a couple at a time but you’d be surprised at hos good they are.

I must be like the only person I know who doesn’t like oreos period. give me chocolate chip anyday though.

It’s hot here (for the UK) - my flat gets the afternoon sun so stays hot all night, which is a pain as it affect my sleep. Also feel a bit wibbly after three days on tuna and whey in order to combat the theme park food diet of the last couple of weeks.
Still, no excuses for not getting my arse to the gym this morning.

Warm-up (dislocates, mobility stuff).

Military Press

(Warm up: 10 x bar)
9 x 27.5kg

Added weight after last time. The empty bar felt heavy enough - 9 reps was all I could manage with the new weight.

Chins x 4

(+1 over last time)

Decline Push-ups (shoulder-width hand spacing) x 12

(+2 over last time - still hard though!)

Chins x 3

24kg Dumbell Rows x 12

Had to put the weight down a couple of times to regrip, but got the reps out. Can move up next time.

40kg Bench Press x 12

(+2)
Still not happy with the way my shoulder feels, to be honest. I’ll add weight next time but if it doesn’t start feeling better soon, I may cut the benching and rely on push-ups for a while.

Chins x 2

40kg Pulldowns x 12

I didn’t add weight, which I should have done, but that’s just as well as I struggled a bit - the shoulder didn’t feel great.

Weighted hyperextensions (12kg) x 12

+2kg. Actually felt pretty tough. But I’ll go to 14kg next time.

Stretching.

Considering I barely had the energy to walk up the escalator at the tube station, I feel pretty satisfied with this. After watching that epic tennis match at Wimbledon (the one that spanned three days, lasted 11 hours and featured over 100 aces each player) I feel there’s no excuse for pussing out of anything, even if you are tired.

To be fair is I had to have cookies I’d want oatmeal raisin, though when I’m going to really splurge I want apple pie.

Yeah I definitely pick fruity over chocolatey when it comes to cake or cookie things. If I want chocolate, then I eat chocolate. The very expensive, gourmet kind.

No excuses, you showed up and did it. Awesome. I’m sorry your shoulder continues to be a little bitch. I’m going to try benching tomorrow on mine – we will see.

pie FTW and any fruit pie is my friend. I can eat a whole rasberry pie by myself with a side of vanilla icecream… I need to have breakfast now.

Wow! You’re killing those work outs! especially considering your post vacation and doing tons of high volume.

Does suck about your shoulder tho. My shoulder acts up as well. So annoying.

Oreos are awesome just for the variety in which they can be consumed - regular, dipped in milk, unscrewed-filling first, unscrewed-cracker-filling-cracker…If I made porn It would be called “2 sleeves, 1 sitting”.

Just catching up here. First, your back looks AMAZING. Something for me to aspire to! Glad you had a good trip and are back on schedule with the work outs. I have not eaten a fried Oreo because I know it could easily become an addiction. For now when I want a treat (I allow one a month) I have this $9 per slice homemade coconut cream pie a local restaurant makes. Yum. I enjoy every bite.

I figure if I allow myself to have one high quality decadent dessert I don’t miss the low quality junk that is easily accessible. Working so far! Your work outs look killer woman!

The plan was to train yesterday, but I had a crappy night’s sleep and felt like a zombie when I woke up. Most of the time I’d just muscle through this, but my shoulder wasn’t feeling good either (guess I slept on it) and I don’t want to fuck it up further because my form gets sloppy because I’m tired.

The day wasn’t entirely unproductive, though - I finished uploading my holiday photos, cleaned the bath, did my grocery shopping, cleaned the kitchen and changed the bedsheets (you have no idea how much I hate housework). Oh and I had some ice cream. It’s fucking hot here. I mean really hot.

This morning I got my arse up and went out for a run at 9.45am and it was hot already. (I ran 4.5 miles, btw - I had the energy to go further but by that point my mouth was a parched wasteland and if I’d got any hotter I might have exploded into bloody chunks of steaming flesh). Apparently it’s going to hit 31 degrees - that’s 88 in old money. And as it’s London, that means it’s a sticky, dirty heat.

If you’re wondering about the running, it’s because I only have a few weeks until my next 10K. I’m hoping it’s not as bloody hot then or it’ll feel like the Marathon des Sables.

It’ll be a couple of degrees cooler tomorrow, but still hot. Fortunatley I’m not working - I’m going to Thorpe Park with a friend (that’s a theme park, by the way). I don’t mind the weather when I’m coastering.

Ha! I found this quite poetic.

Running in the heat is the worst! I like running and I like heat, but I don’t like them together.

I forgot about the 10k! if you thought 4.5 miles was easy, you got 10k without a doubt.

Yeah well this will the third 10K of the year - I’m down to run five (it’s a series). I’d like to find a longer race but I need something that is a) offroad and b) can be reached by public transport. The thing with the 10K series is that it’s only 15 minutes walk or 5 minutes on the tube away from where I live, and it’s on a common. But I feel like I need a new challenge! (And don’t say triathlon - I can’t ride a bike and a hate swimming).

What about kayaking on the Thames? Upper body workout, galore.

mmmm, kayaking…

Kayaking is great. I’d try it.
Just adjust down for number of miles – you can’t kayak as long as you can run.

It’s not a bad idea - I did kayaking on an Outward Bound course when I was 18 and enjoyed it for the mostpart (the kayaking bit was fine, but I didn’t like the capsize drill!) I checked out a local club online but it has frozen its membership for inexperienced people (oversubscribed I guess).

It’s also not cheap to do, and since I won’t have a job as of next month, money’s a consideration. I need to find stuff I can do for free, at the moment. Anyway, onward.

Hit the gym this morning:

Warm-up (dislocates, mobility stuff).

Military Press

(Warm up: 10 x bar)
10 x 27.5kg (+1)

Chins x 4

(No change, but 4th rep was better)

Decline Push-ups (shoulder-width hand spacing) x 14 (+2)

Chins x 3 (no change)

26kg Dumbell Rows: Right x 8, Left x 10 (+2kg)

I am right handed and my right lat is bigger, so I’ve no idea why I’m stronger on my left side with these. It may be because my right shoulder is duff.

46kg Bench Press x 3 (Added 5kg but shoulder didn’t like it so I stopped).

This is frustrating, considering I’ve benched 70kg and have done 60kg for reps. But I’m going to shelve bench for now. I don’t gain anything from hurting myself more.

Chins x 3 (+1)

45kg Pulldowns x 11 (+5kg)

Quite pleased with this as I put the weight up and nearly got the 12 reps.

Weighted hyperextensions (14kg) x 12 (+2kg)

Damn these are tough! The rep count obligates me to add weight next time but ouch!

Stretching.
