Cal's Big Log

I think the EZ bar weighs 15 pounds.

So far I only have a 12 kg kettlebell, and that was plenty for me when I tried your pushup/kettlebell killer workout.

Arms, arms, arms. Love it.

In my experience, EZ curl bars usually weigh 18 lb, 25 lb, or 32.5 lb. To further demonstrate my neurosis, I must admit that I have carried them into the locker room to weigh them at various gyms.

I was going to go for a run yesterday but I had butt/ham DOMS from the KB swings, and it was raining. I can usually motivate myself to run with one or the other, but not both.

So today I went back to the common near work and did more hill repeats, as last week. Only this time my stamina and recovery was better, and I got 8 reps rather than 6. Niggly butt/ham thing is still there. I think it’s down to a combination of piriformis syndrome and referred pain from my back injury. It’s a dull ache rather than anything that feels critical, and bothers me most when I’m sitting.
Still, felt happy with that workout.

On a personal note, my mother’s gone to a nursing home for a couple of weeks. She’s not steady on her feet and has a UTI. I’m visiting this weekend and have ordered a Discman and a couple of audio books to cheer her up a bit. Seeing as she can’t speak or move properly and can’t concentrate to read any more, her quality of life is diminishing and she’s pretty miserable. I hope she can get some rest and TLC in the home.

The whole aging parents thing really, really bites.

And I’m very familiar with the dull ache. That’s ignorable.

Hill repeats are looking awesome.

Yes, I must admit I’m enjoying the running more than the gym right now. A lot of it’s because we’re having a really nice spring here (Sunday morning’s rain excepted) and it’s good to be outdoors after such a long, shitty winter.

I have a 5K in May which is just for fun, but my aim is to bring my running times down. I’m such a plodder normally (I am usually around 10 minute mile pace). My best 10K times are around 57 minutes and I’d like to get under 55. That’s respectable for “most people my age” but in terms of the people who actually run the 10Ks I do, I usually finish in the last 25%. Anyway…one thing at a time.

x2

I weighed the one in our gym much to the dismay of the desk monkeys.

I’m also trying to get my 5k speed back. Before my surgery I was running around the 25 minute mark but I’m a long way away from that now. Those hill repeats looked nasty.

^^^^^

So I’m not the only one who needs to be committed.

Cal, I think your race times are damn respectable! My fastest 5K was 26 something. And I thought that was pretty damn good for being 40-something and a non-runner.

nope ive weighed the bars in my gym as well. 2-4lb discrepancy even on the full barbells.

cal, i hope your mom gets to relax while she’s there. be an involved, nosy child. i’ve heard and seen horror stories about those places… both of my grandmothers have been in, and my sister worked in one for awhile. let them know you’re paying attention and are motivated to kick ass where necessary.

my own mother, on the other hand, has requested we off her if she ever gets to that point. she’s too damned independent and stubborn to be without any of her faculties.

I don’t blame her. I’m seriously considering offing myself as soon as things start failing. If I can’t have fun, I don’t want to live. Seems my mother can’t really have fun any more. I don’t think she’ll be around for too much longer, to be honest.

Anyway…gym today. Rather lacklustre, due to low calorie intake yesterday and only 6 hours sleep (daresay those hill sprints took a bit out of me as well).

3 x Superset

26kg Dumbell Rows x 10
Decline push-ups x 10

Military Press

bar x 10
25kg x 8
30kg x 6, 5, 5

Would normally do these first but someone was using the rack for bent over rows. Sigh. Least it wasn’t curls.

Straight arm pulldowns

2 x 25kg x 10

Was going to do some seated rows but I was too pooped, to be honest. Did some stretching instead.

Lower back still annoying. Be a while before I can do any serious lifting again but, well, just over a month until I cross the Pond to ride shitloads of rollercoasters. Although those trips are tiring (lots of early starts, long coach journeys etc) I often feel good on them because I sleep amazingly well. Nothing like a big shot of adrenaline during the day to make you sleep like a baby.

I think we all believe we’ll off ourselves when the going gets rough and can’t get any better. But I don’t think anyone really knows until the situation is at hand. Maybe you put up with bullshit that you once said you never would because the alternative seems even more bleak when you’re truly faced with it.

Curls in the rack. Second only in annoyance to the guys who load up the plates and squat, oh, about 2 inches. I loathe waiting on either of 'em.

That’s some fine rowing. I so suck at supersetting upper body stuff. My endurance is shyte.

And anyways, you can’t off yourself when you keep forgetting where you’ve left the implement with which you are to off yourself with…sad really.

Nice rows, and supersetting with pushups? That’s hard work! I tried that yesterday with presses but found that the supersetting makes the lifting even more stupidly difficult. Good stuff Cal.

editing so you don’t see double posts (which is one of my pet peeves)

< this is me twiddling my thumbs…

I’ve been on no carbs and low cals until today, so I’ve been feeling pretty weak (not literally so - it just feels as though someone took the bones out of my legs. Sort of floppy and listless). No excuse to miss the gym though.

Superset

Chins: 3, 3, 3, 2
Decline push-ups: 10, 10, 10, 10

Underhand grip chins - my AC joint will have a big hissy fit if I try to go overhand (and well, we’d be talking single rep sets, too).

Superset

Skull crushers: 10kg x 12, 15kg x 8, 17.5kg x 6
Close grip press: 10kg x 12, 15kg x 8, 17.5kg x 6

As before.

Superset

20kg Dumbell press: 8, 8
8kg seated curls: 10, 10

I dropped down a weight for the overhead dumbell press, then realise I actually got less reps than before. I blame it on the low cals.

Did some hypers and a lot of stretching.

Weighed self: 10st 7lbs (147lbs) / 67kg - down 1lb. (Good). Still not happy about my jiggly bagel. Hope I can get rid of it in time for my holiday.

Having a bit of a carb up tonight - well, a bag of nuts and dried fruit. I’ve been finding it hard to concentrate at work so food is kind of necessary if I want to keep my job. If I feel better tomorrow I may throw in some hill repeats.

Cal - sorry to hear about your Mama… I agree with Bear! My Grandfather suffered major neglect in a nursing home… and he was visited daily by family members and we still didn’t catch it for a long time! Very sad!

Take care of that lower back! Finicky b*tches aren’t they?!?!

She’s only there for two weeks, I believe…so it’s not so bad. It’s better than putting her in hospital. She was miserable there, last I went to visit her.

Yeah, lower backs are bitches. Never had any problems with it until I started trying to squat. Then it all went horribly down hill.

That’s your carb up? A carb up for me is like three bagels and two bowls of ice cream.

Sorry to hear about your mom. I went through nursing homes with my dad when I was 19 (long, long ago, lol). Its never fun. I am glad to hear you are going to see her and trying to make things as bearable as possible. you often see so many parents completely neglected by their own families. I hope everything turns out ok for everyone.

Lower back issues are the absolute worst thing that can happen. Its difficult to recover from an injury in your back. I am like an old lady walking around with a TENS unit…sucks to get old

PS - nice supersets, kuddos on the chins.

You know, I am not entirely sure that I can do even one decline pushup. I’ll have to try one and see what you are up to with those.
