Cal's Big Log II: The Revenge

hope you have fun at your amusement parks. fingers crossed it doesn’t rain too much for you. i need to look into merrells too, i think. find something that can approximate a dress shoe…

You have the summer off!?!?! I am absolutely green with envy.

Have a great time on the coasters.

Take walks!!!

It’s good for low moods as well. For me anyway. If I’m not in the gym, I feel I must do something or I feel lazy. Going for a morning walk is a great way to start the day.

I hear you on the weight loss. Moderate approach never worked for me. But probably cause I had the thyroid thing and didn’t know it. Going drastic was the only option. And I know this shit gets harder as we get older.

I’m already itching to get this extra weight off that has been hanging out too long. But I should be patient to give the meds and my body a chance to catch up.

I’ve have a weird ball thing in my foot too. I was on medical hold in the Navy because I have something messed up in the pad beneath my big toe. Even today I can’t stretch it out, like doing lunges and stuff HURTS. grr

ah yes the perk of being a teacher - enjoy it Cal

Is there any particular reason why you want to loose fat? Is it just vanity? NTTAWWT
But if that’s the reason then why not just take some sexy nekkid photos of yourself? These would force you to appreciate the way your body looks, if you’ve never done this it can be eye-opening. Maybe you’ll realize you look better than just “not too bad”. Nekkid picture therapy!

You don’t have to post the nekkid pics but you could if you wanted too. 0:-)

The clothes job is to make you look good, if they are too tight then they are failing at their job.

I could not agree with this more.

bravo, Charlotte~!

Hmm, words of wisdom.

If the only thing holding you back from feeling 100% about your body are those trousers, well maybe they have to go. Although I can see where you might want to just lose that last bit of extra (whatever) since you are so close to comfortably fitting in them.

I’ve just got back from a great weekend. Unfortunately I picked up another cold (I suspect I got it from the kids at school - I’d like to go two fecking months without a cold, but no!) so I feel a bit ropey.

I got to do a track walk of The Ultimate, a rather odd English coaster that held the world’s longest coaster title for quite a while (it’s still Europe’s longest - only Steel Dragon 3000 in Japan is longer, currently). It wasn’t built by a coaster company but in-house with the help of some railway people. It has sleepers rather than foundations. It’s pretty wild, too. Oh, and I wore my Vibrams. Heh.

Regarding comments above - clothes in England are about four times as expensive as in the US. I’m not replacing my entire wardrobe, especially not on my modest part-time salary. Especially as I really like some of those trousers and I’m not going to admit defeat. I look OK, sure, but I could look better. I’ve got summer to sort myself out (foot injury and virus not withstanding). Seeing Nicole tomorrow about the foot. I guess I’ll go to the doctor if she suggests it - I just hate going to GPs. But I am a bit concerned about the lump. Probably a cyst but it’s not going anywhere so I need to get it sorted.

Cal: You are just adorable in your element. Sorry to hear about your foot and your cold. I hope those things resolve quickly. You certainly haven’t been given an easy go of things lately. Hang in there.

Ok Cal, I get ya, I can’t afford any clothes right now either and nothing ever fits my hips-waist ratio properly so shopping is a chore. You don’t want to look like a vagabond like me anyway

They always look like fun till I get on them but I can’t do rollercoasters, I get very very queasy. F
eel better and yes I don’t like wasting money on doctors either but best to get it looked at.

I remember meeting some people from England when I was traveling and they told me that it’s cheaper for them to fly to New York to buy new clothes than it is to buy them there. That’s so bizarre to me, but I understand the not buy a whole new wardrobe thing. You look just lovely in that picture by the way. Hope you get the foot thing taken care of, seems like that’s been going on for some time now, and I know injuries wear out their welcome quickly!

Doctors are free here so the money isn’t a problem - it’s just that they are usually rubbish with anything other than the usual illnesses. They treat symptoms not causes and there’s a lot of fobbing off because they are trying to get through the patients as quickly as possible. However, I’ve just come back from seeing Nicole (which does cost me, considerably) and there’s no getting around the fact I need to see a doctor, if only for a referral, because I need to get a scan.

Nicole poked around, said my foot was interesting and the lump was most likely one of the sesamoid bones, which means it could have been ripped off the tendon or could even be an extra (because I already have the accessory navicular in that foot and where there’s one spare part, there is often another). She is going to write a letter to recommend I get a scan (since doctors would rather not send you for anything other than an x-ray due to the expense) so we can figure out what is going on in there. Needless to say, running is out, and there’s the possibility I may need surgery. Yay.

She also cracked my neck, so at least the headache is gone, and messed around with my hips. Apparently that jammed up feeling is due to tightness in the capsule. So, a lotta stretching in my future.

I’m not training today - want to give this cold a chance to go. I want to be at full strength when I get back into the gym.

Glad you had fun! Sucks about the cold.

Will be interesting what you find out about your foot.

A lump in one’s foot is certainly concerning. Here in the US with no medical insurance, you’d be out big-time money to have that taken care of. I pay an outrageous sum per month for health insurance (as I’m self-employed) and a bit bitter about it.

What is the time-frame for getting a scan? I sure hope you don’t have to wait forever and a day, because I know how anxious you must be to get your running back.

BTW, I tried on the Merrell Pace Gloves and quite liked them. I can’t justify them at the moment, but they were a cute shoe and pretty comfortable. My VFF beat them for comfort, but their looks aren’t quite as versatile.

Oh dear, Cal! That doesn’t sound good. But I’m really, REALLY glad you’re getting it taken care of. I’m sending you good vibes! Hopefully you’ll get everything resolved.

Also, you such a freaking cutie! Your love of coasters shows

Hang in there Cal!

Woke up this morning, felt grotty, thought about training and decided I wasn’t up to it. Had a cuppa, ate some raspberries and a few brazil nuts (yeah, still got some of those buggers kicking around), had another cuppa, played a game and decided I couldn’t just sit on my arse all day so I stuck my Blondie greatest hits CD on and went to cleaning the kitchen with a purpose. (The fact it’s full of mouse shit gave me extra incentive. Fucking mice). Even cleaned the oven, which I haven’t done in, uh, maybe three or four years. (Actually it’s still full of corrosive fluid. I’ll have to scrub it later).

After that lot I was feeling a bit better so another cuppa and some forum browsing later I wriggled into my Vibrams and went to the gym. I normally go early, so I was expecting crowds (it was midday) but it was actually pretty quiet. Trained legs.

Warm-up:

20 hypers
20 reverse hypers with V at top
20 clams (per leg)
20 single leg hip thrusters (foot on high bench) (per leg)
2 x 20 overhead split squats using a 5kg body bar (per leg)

There was some brief rest between sets of split squats. My legs felt like jelly after - that second set was tough.

Went into the free weight room and did a set of 10 squats with the oly bar. I don’t think I’m squatting to depth but it does feel a bit better than before.

Box Squats:

Bar x 10
30kg x 10
40kg x 5, 5, 5, 4 (15 seconds rest between sets)

Less reps overall - I was trying to ease back into it due to the cold (and the jelly legs didn’t help). The 15 second rest felt like nothing. It was pretty brutal. But I was sitting back a lot better than last week. I think whatever Nicole did to my hips yesterday obviously helped a bit.

Leg Extensions:

30kg x 10
40kg x 10
45kg x 10
50kg x 10 (it was more like 7, a few breaths and then 3)

Harder than last time but my quads were fried by that point. Between that and the squats I was grunting a fair bit.

Single Leg Curls:

30kg x 10/10, 8/8

Second sets were killer.

Leg Press:

80kg x 10
120kg x 10
140kg x 10

And I was done. I did a little stretching, did one good handstand (still touched the wall, mind, but not too much) and two shitty ones and decided my body had had enough. Home, hot bath, fried mackerel and salad and TV (working my way through the shows I recorded while I was away).

Headache/stiff neck is back. Curses. Will foam roll later.

Nice job getting into the gym and hitting those legs. Love the glute work!

Also glad to hear that Nicole helped out the hips situ.

I’m concerned about this headache/stiff neck though…do you have any idea how it came about? Maybe stress? Any correlation to the foot thing? For me, I find that neck problems are always related to something completely unrelated to my neck - like tension in my back, mostly as a result of stress. Either way, hot bath and fried mackerel actually sound like a great remedy for it!

All in all, that sounds like a decent day. I hope you are feeling improved tomorrow. Summertime colds somehow are just wrong.

I love the roller coaster pick in the bright pink vibrams.

Also, great leg work.

Well I’ve finished the oven cleaning - what a gross job that was. Couldn’t get it completely clean, either. I guess I shouldn’t have set fire when cooking sausages. Oops.

Headache’s gone - I took two Migraleve which is the only thing that seems to work (paracetamol/codeine). I’m not overly concerned - it’s just upper back/shoulder tension. I have very twitchy levators and they get upset quite easily. However, I did buy new pillows a couple of months back and it could from that - they’re puffier than the old ones I threw out. (There was also the stress of not knowing if I was going to have my contract confirmed at school, plus the sports day).
