Cal's Big Log II: The Revenge

You have the bad luck with injuries lady! Happy belated birthday!

If you do have to stop the running I find/have found that oly lifts (lower weights for reps), supersets(especially with a compound lift for the lowerbody), and explosive movements were great for getting the heart pumping. What about rowing? Just some recommends just in case.

Hopefully it is not as bad as you think.

Rugby player Danny Care. He’s very concerned about your foot and would like to offer his ummm cuddling services.

Yeah I will need a proper diagnosis - I’m just guessing based on where the pain is. The idea of a fracture worries me and from what I’ve read, can easily be missed due to the size of the bones. I’ve actually found that the less supportive the shoe, the more comfortable I am. I was sore wearing the trainers I usually wear to work so I wore Chucks the next day and they felt a bit better. Bare feet are the most comfortable.

Party was fun - I was quite sensible about getting myself home before the last tube left. I drank a bit, not too much, ate some cake and smoked a lot (not cigarettes). That tends to happen when I’m with my friend Colin. I feel only slightly grotty. I’m going to drink lots of tea now and try and finish writing reports. No training today.[/quote]

Hi Cal. Happy belated birthday!

I followed Charlie Horse in, lol.

Ladies tend to be extremely harsh on their appearance. I saw no spillage on your camo pic. You look great in that picture.

I used to run a little. Was at 25-30 miles a week and developed plantar faciitus. I have never really been able to seriously restart running since then. (That was 95…). It’s on my bucket list.

I hope you can recover quickly from your heel pain.

Here’s an example of taping feet to alleviate the PF pain. I used a variation of it when I was in a lot of pain and it helped.

You mentioned that you can not use biking as a cardio option. Does that also mean stationary bikes?

Happy Birthday!!!

Hm…there’s so much you can smoke in this world Cal - cock, salmon, cigars…the mind wonders, lol!

Anyways, glad you had fun! And that you weren’t too sauced to miss the tube. (another reason I love NYC, subway runs 24/7!)

Sorry to hear about your foot. You are unlucky! But i’m always impressed how you manage to work around your injuries and aches, so keep at it! Hopefully it doesn’t turn out to be anything too serious. Great work in here, no less

Oh and yeah, i don’t see any spillage either!! I think you have a nice little mid-section there. Looks perfect in camo pants!

Heh, well it’s a blurry photo. There’s definitely squish there but I guess it doesn’t show too well.
What I will say is, right now, I don’t think my body looks awful. It is a bit on the soft side but it goes in and out in the right places. I would not appear fat to the average person. The problem is that all my clothes are tight. Some I can’t get into. I had to dig out an old pair of fat day jeans to wear. They are a UK 14 (around a US 10-12, depending on the store - it’d be a GAP size 10) and I’ve not needed to do that for a few years. I am also 11 stone (154lbs) as of yesterday which isn’t quite panic weight territory but it’s definitely a good 7lbs away from my happy weight. (And before anyone asks if I might have added muscle, whilst I suppose this is possible, I find it doubtful considering my injuries have prevented me from doing much more than rehab work recently). Heavy scale weight plus tight clothes equals time to diet.

Anyway… regarding the foot (and it’s the ball of my right foot, below the big toe…not the heel) it is starting to feel a bit better. I can pad around my flat quite happily now and I walked to the shops earlier without discomfort. It remains tender if I attempt to pull the toe back and if I palpate the sore part, so I know it isn’t better. However, it may not be as bad as I suspected.

I am not going to rush back into running. Far too soon for that. But I’m hoping it’ll allow me to run before too long. Fingers crossed.

Hai Cal!

Happy belated birthday, you young thing you! I’m glad you had a good party to celebrate.

Here’s hoping that foot pain is just a minor matter that will fade away quickly. Putting a new ache on top of the known issues is just too depressing for words.

I’m late to the party-but I’ll put in my vote for no spillage! And happy belated birthday! I’m glad to hear the foot is starting to feel better. Be nice to it a bit longer and fingers crossed it in turn will be nice to you.

I wanted to post this Beaker in that thread that disappeared.
So I’ll post it here seeing as you are responsible for what Beaker is doing to himself!

Contain your lusty thoughts, wench!

yes, fingers crossed for your toe. i have fairly persistent pain there (with trying to stretch my toes back from the balls of my feet - especially my big toe) and it is no fun at all. maybe some (very gentle) tennis ball rolling and stretching will help? or maybe it is the kind of thing that just needs to be left alone for a bit to heal.

I confess I have been incredibly lazy since the party. I trained Saturday. I was not planning on training Sunday. Monday and Tuesday I just didn’t feel great. I didn’t drink much at all so I wasn’t hungover, but I was still suffering the after effects of the cold virus, not to mention the tiredness. And my left shoulder is still cranky - I keep sleeping on it wrong and waking up with it hurting. It’s annoying. I decided it was better just to concentrate on writing my school reports whilst resting my body (now, if only I wasn’t exposed to so many germs…but that’s working with kids for you).

Anyway, just to say I’m much better rested and looking forward to resuming normal training this weekend.
My foot is much better. I was quite concerned because it was quite painful to walk on initially but I can walk no problem now and I can stand on tiptoes. I haven’t tried running yet as it’s still a little tender if I bend the toes right back and also if I prod, but nowhere as bad as it has been. I’ll see how it responds to squatting on Saturday.

First training for a week.

Glute activation warm-up

20 hypers
20 reverse hypers with V at top
20 clams (per leg)
20 single leg hip thrusters (foot on high bench) (per leg)
20 overhead split squats using a body bar (per leg)

Did some handstand practise as the mats were free, then went off to the free weights room, which was sweltering. Due to the eccentricities of their heating system, if the hot water is on, so are the radiators. Mental.

Box Squats (6 risers + 15kg plate)

Bar x 20
30kg x 10
5 x 40kg x 5
50kg x 2 (felt heavy.

Stretched between sets.

Leg Extension (plate loader machine)

25kg x 10
30kg x 10
35kg x 10
40kg x 10
45kg x 8

I just wanted to see how much I could do, to be honest, so I kept going until I could no longer get 10 reps.
And what d’ya know, I can extend as much as I can squat. Maybe more. How crazy is that?

Single Leg Curl (Cybex)

20kg x 10 (per leg)
25kg x 10 (per leg)

I messed around with some body bar snatches, did a bit of stretching and called it a day. I feel vaguely satisfied given that I have a bad foot and have just got over a cold, but also slightly disturbed about the whole leg extension/squat comparison.

Weight: 11 stone 2 (156lbs) - up 2lbs from last week. No mystery there - my “birthday” treats turned into four days off the wagon. Oops.

Glad your foot isn’t holding you back. I did something stupid with my foot and had to train in socks the entire week.

How long have you been practising gymnastics?

A birthday celebration and a few rest days. All good, especially when you’re trying to recover from having a cold. I hope you are feeling strong, refueled, rested, and ready to hit it hard again. GO!

And you’ve got a sweet hourglass body, whether you like it or not. Personally, I like it. And getting your weight down 5-7 pounds will happen quickly if you get down to it. It does feel good to go in your closet and be able to wear everything, without worrying about if it will fit well. You’re only a month away from that, Cal. Sorry you are gonna have to work around the foot pain, but you can do it!

yup a break is good sometimes  Enjoy it and then carry on and you will be just fine!

Thanks Puffy!

Techno - only since September. I’m dyspraxic. My fine motor skills are good but my overall spatial awareness is sucky. And ironically, I got a job teaching PE at a primary school. Realised I couldn’t teach gymnastics if I didn’t even know how to do a few basic things, so I took a gymnastics class at Crossfit in East London. I figured that even if I still couldn’t do stuff, then at least I could see how it was taught. And hey presto, I can do a pretty good forward roll, a headstand and a handstand with wall support (I’m still some way from a free-standing handstand, but it’ll come). I haven’t been to the class since May due to various injuries but I’ll resume when I can. In the meantime, I mess about on the mats at my local gym when I’ve time.

That’s nice little story there. The body can amaze at times. Forward rolls may be handy, you might have to go through a flaming building or dodge a few bullets. I’m klutzy and a few loved ones expressed their ‘concern’ when I showed them what Olympic lifting actually was, but hey my body is doing fine so far, its the normal day-to-day stuff I have to watch out. That’s great you are teaching it, is it a mixed class?

I teach age 3 - 11. Nursery is mixed but the prep school is all girls. It’s quite tricky because there’s a massive difference in terms of ability between the age groups. The little 'uns can’t do an awful lot but it goes right up to Years 5 and 6 where the girls are pretty competent at netball, not to mention competitive. The older ones are all starting to get hormonal too. I have to deal with quite a lot of moods and arguments, heh.
