Cal's Big Log II: The Revenge

A what now? No we don’t have anything fancy, not even a good girl/bad girl machine.
I like KB swings for glutes but can’t do 'em right now because I can’t hold weights at arm’s length. Stupid arm.

I’m with you on the royal wedding. It was live at 7pm here…it could barely be avoided but I found a way out… I was watching aussie rules football instead. I felt like a horrible person for a few seconds because a friend text’d that she was crying while watching the wedding. I flicked it on for a minute (to feel better about myself), got sick of the singing, and resumed back to the yummy footballers in their tiny shorts.

Just woke up. I had to stretch my back out in the night - running for that long does cause all manner of muscle aches. Oh and my left foot is sore again. I don’t think it’s an injury exactly - just some soft tissue soreness akin to DOMS.

I looked at my race instructions for Sunday 8th. I have to be there by 8.10am and there’s a mile and a half walk from the nearest train station which means to get on my first train at 6.55am (a 5 minute journey) and then hang around Clapham Junction for 20 minutes waiting for my connection. And at that time on a Sunday morning there will be no shops open.
Or I could get a taxi. [/quote]

Hows the foot feeling?

My main running injury was my foot. No defining moment that hurt it, but it was there the whole race. I blamed it on a weak muscle in my foot due to an old soccer fracture. I taped it, and it helped a little, but mainly I knew it would be painful by 17km and that my mind would just have to be stronger.

It doesn’t even sound good on paper =(

Cal, you say you can’t do KB swings, what about cable pull-throughs?
If you wanted to do anything like that. Your leg workouts look good to me; being safe with the arm yet still hammering the major muscles.

the ohio state fair has chocolate covered bacon as a food option.

i have declined the circus of that fair and the bacon and plan to continue to do so. ugh.

MIM- youre fucking crazy. cute, but crazy.

cal- 1m hold on leg extensions sounds awful, in an awesome way. might try that sometime.

MiM! Taking pics of the TV!! I love it!! Thats some Argentina type stuff, right there. HAHAHA!

Just did KB swings today - you’re correct, great glute w/o. So you can’t extend your arms at all? Or just not hold the weight.

@sarahdawn - foot is OK. I think it was just a grumbly ache rather than an injury (although I’m aware that grumbly aches can turn into injuries if left unchecked). I had an issue with the other foot about a year and a half ago when I sprained my ankle. I have an extra bone (an accessory navicular) in the right foot and although it never bothered me before, after the sprain it became painful for some time. Once I was back to running, I just used to grit my teeth and ignore it. Thankfully it seems OK these days because I have enough teeth gritting to with regard to my sciatica. Which is a pain in the arse. Literally.

Nikki/Masch - I can straighten my arm but not while holding a weight. The pain is on the inside (soft) part of my elbow and is worst when I am holding a weight at arm’s length with my arm straight/locked. Which rules out most of the posterior chain stuff, unfortunately. With the step-ups that I’m doing, I had to abandon weighted step-ups and just make up for it by using a higher step because holding even a 10kg (22lb) dumbell was uncomfortable.
I’m having Nicole (my ART) look at it on Tuesday and see what she recommends.

Bear - the 1 minute hold isn’t fun but it’s the 10 reps done immediately afterwards that really suck. Let’s just say it’s cathartic.

YAY!!!

Good luck with that elbow. I know that it is so fucking frustrating to deal with injuries. I’d love to have you as a patient though because cases like yours are what fuels innovation. Does the elbow ever swell? Does it feel weak? Does it hurt when you aren’t doing anything? Does it radiate? Just curious.

Meanwhile, seems that you’ve been doing some good work regarding the running and lower training. Nice job of making the best things.

Sorry bout the elbow Cal. I just discovered weighted step-ups and they are harder than I’d expected. Keep at the bulgarians and high step-ups for now and just let the elbow heal.

As for weddings, Mims is our romantic! Sweet!

I’ve never had a thing for big weddings. We got married in a ski lodge with a few close friends and family. We literally went and picked out the flowers, food, and place in ONE DAY! It was the closest thing to eloping we could manage. I just don’t get why people want to spend a year, and thousands of dollars planning these things. And, I find it strange that Americans are so infatuated with British royalty.

Heh, I think it’s because the Americans have never had royalty, so it’s strange and fascinating.

Veggie - I’d certainly love to have you prod my sore bits! As to your questions, it does not swell or feel weak, but it certainly hurts a fair bit when I wake up. I have provided a shitty photo to show where it hurts. If I stick my finger into my arm, I can feel a fat tendon there that is somewhat sore. There’s no problem with the more prominent biceps tendon on the inside of the arm. The brachioradialis is also tender when I palpate it but it’s likely just sore because it’s my mousing arm. I also developed golfer’s elbow from squatting but it’s fairly mild and I’ve changed the way I hold the bar now.

If I let my arm hang loose at my side it doesn’t hurt. If I lock it out, however, or hold a weight so that the arm is forced to straighten out, it hurts quite a bit. However, if I support myself on straight arms (eg, top of a push-up, or a downward dog) it’s fine. Any pulling motion hurts.

Sunny Sunday morning: 7.5 mile run. A bit further than you’d suggested, Nadia, but the weather was so nice I wanted to stay out there.
Wore the new (black) Frees. They feel the same as the old ones, actually, so I’ll use these for the half next weekend. Arse hurt though. Damn it.

So, I am way out of the loop about the wedding, I didn’t even know it had already happened lol.

Argh running, I could walk for hours but for some reason can’t stand running.

It’s too bad about the elbow still hurting. :frowning:

Cal: That’s great that you recovered so quickly from your long run last weekend. I’m glad you had a good run and felt good!

Today: More or less the same workout. Slightly different order (due to equipment availability).

20 hypers
20 clams (per leg)
20 reverse hypers (with V at top)
20 bosu ball squat/sit-up thingies
20 hip thrusty air hump thingies (one foot on a high bench, other leg straight in air) per leg

6 TGUs (8kg, 3 per side)
A bit pathetic, these - I kind of failed on the last rep (arm dropped down) so I ended there. Didn’t want to aggravate the duff elbow.

100 step ups (50 per leg, alternating) using 8 risers + step.

3 x 12 bulgarian split squats (no weight). (added a set. These are starting to feel easier)

Squat:

Bar x 10
30kg x 10 (+10)
25kg x 10 (+10)
40kg x 8 (+10)

The (+10) indicates that I did 10 jumping squats (no weight) as soon as I’d racked the bar.

Bent over leg curl: 2 x 20kg (per leg) (12, 10)
Another +1 rep on the first set. These are hard, seriously. And I do notice that my left hammy is weaker.

Leg extensions:
10 reps, 1 minute hold at top, then 10 more reps (and a lot of grimacing): 22.5kg, 25kg (added 2.5kg to both sets)

Stretching.

PS if anyone thinks they can tell me what is wrong with my elbow (see the post with the photo above this one) I’d be grateful.

I just stopped in here, cause I understand that Cal goes commando…always.

this is important.

Almost as important as the royal wedding.

no, probably importanter.

a good volume leg workout, sorry about your arm though. I have no clue.

Just letting you know that I’m thinking on your elbow issue. I’ll let you know what I come up with.

how could someone talk shit on chocolate n bacon??? i thought i lurved u nikki.

I am almost always commando, Edgy! The exception is on the rare occassions when I’m wearing a dress, when I wear French knickers. I just don’t like anything tight around my nether regions.

Regarding chocolate bacon, I had a photo of some I’d made in my last log. I made the mistake of using English-style bacon (which is not crispy) and very dark chocolate. It wasn’t a good combo. I’d recommend using crispy bacon and milk chocolate (make sure it is good quality, not crap like Hershey) because dark chocolate is too bitter and it doesn’t offset the saltiness of the bacon well.

I’m seeing Nicole today so I’ll find out more about the elbow problem. I have a sneaking suspicion it stems from gymnastics and handstand/cartwheel practise.
