Cal's Big Log II: The Revenge

That “conversation w/yourself” is something that we all do. Yours was hilarious. I really love reading your log. Nice DL training.

WOW!! That meal sounds UN-REAL!! I’d freaking kill for it! And yes, absolutely worth every penny - judging by the pics.

Hilarious auto-conversation! Glad you two could work things out. Lol!

Nice DLing - you put up some serious weight. Good work!

Cal: You’re too funny. Glad you made it to the gym today. Sounds like those handstands are really coming along.

Oh yep that would be great to. It will help with the core strength a bunch - I am able to hold it for like 30-45 seconds depending on the day, a minute would be nice. I should work on them more, there are just entirely to many exercises that need worked

LMAO Cal
I had a similar conversation with myself today as well, looks like both the Sergeants won

For me it’s quite the balancing act between respecting the needs of my (let’s face it) ageing body, and being a lazy sod. Throw some injuries into the mix and I often have a bit of a dilemma.

Found the stretchers

Many thanks.

And it’s another spring-like day which means it’s a run day. It’s actually up to 13 degrees and quite sunny, so I was able to ditch the hoodie after a mile.

I ran my basic three mile Tooting Common course (it’s still very muddy in spots) but when I got to the bridge (Tooting Common is bisected by a railway line) I threw in ten hill sprints. It’s not very long or steep, but ten repeats up a gradient is pretty tiring given I haven’t done any hill sprints since I left my last job. Felt quite good although the sciatica got quite noticeable towards the end of the run (despite me using my roller, hockey and tennis balls before I went out).

Oops sorry. I saw that you asked about these in my log  I suck at logging and I prefer to read other people’s logs! lol. Anyways, glad you got them - give a go! I enjoyed them.

Nice running! I like to throw in hill sprints into my runs too. Feels so damn good!

10 hill sprints is a butt load. You’ll get a lot of bang for your buck with those for sure. Hope your arse isn’t too pissed off at you now.

Oh Cal, you’ll love the stretchers!
They help with details in the back and width, which… you already have… hmm, well at least they’ll be fun for you to do!
Non-torso cool people like me HAVE to have those kinds of things in my training.

I must be lazier than you, because I’ll need to be threatened in order to do hill sprints.

Gym today. Training on Saturdays, even if I go at 8am, isn’t brilliant - lots of fucknuts. One guy left his loaded barbell in the middle of the floor and walked off. I followed him into the machine gym and told him he couldn’t just leave something and he nodded and then went back to his lat pulldowns. Cunt didn’t even come back in to strip his bar. I ended up having to do it. I did grass him up to one of the instructors but I doubt anything will be done. [/rant]

Anyway, I have figured out what is causing a) elbow pain and b) funny behind the knee problem. It is -dun dun dun!- olympic lifting. The elbow is already grumbly from back squats, but it is really very unhappy about the clean position. Crap. As for the knee, the culprit is, specifically, catching a snatch. I don’t really know why, since it’s fine with regular squats and OHS, but jumping from a hip-width stance to land in my customary, wider squat stance at the bottom, seems to piss it off. If anyone has any ideas as to why this should be so, I’d be interested to hear your theories. Anyway, looks like oly lifting is off the menu for the time being.

Military Press

(nb, I followed every set with 10 OHS with a 4kg body bar).

Bar x 10
25kg x 10
5 x 30kg x 5

Those five 30kg sets were pretty hard. Considering I’ve done 10 x 30kg I find that quite surprising - could I be getting weaker? Anyway, then I moved on to…

Box Squats

Bar x 10
30kg x 10
5 x 40kg x 5
2 x 45kg x 5
3 x 50kg x 3

Concentrated on form a lot and made sure I sat my ass down on the 50kg set.

Between the millies and the squats it doesn’t look like I did a lot but that took me around 90 minutes. I wasn’t fucking around either - I stretched and mobilised a bit between sets but I wasn’t taking forever.

The free weights room was busy by this points so I went to the mats next door and did my handstands. They’re getting better. Regular practise seems to be the way forward.

The gym has a new weighing machine - one that also measures body fat (and yes I take those readings with a pinch of salt, but it’s still interesting). As I was planning on starting my diet today (I have been procrastinating since January!) I decided to get on and see what damage I’d done this week. 11 stone 7 (161lbs) - yikes. The body fat reading was likely false as I accidentally entered myself as male - it was 23.4. I’m not sure how it calculates it but I should think it’s higher.

Anyway, I need to dump a lot of weight. I look “normal” in clothes, but I have no definition and my pants are all tight so I want to improve things now it’s starting to get a bit warmer. I’m cutting carbs heavily - it’ll mainly be lean meat and green veg. I’ll keep you posted on how that goes.

Good luck with the diet.

What is it with people who can’t unload their weights? I have been known to hunt them down in the gym as well because I find it so damn annoying as well as such a contradiction.

I hate when people don’t unload, you take the time to put the weights on, just take it off. Then again, I’m just a cleaner like that, I like to organize the plates and put the 5s with the 5s, 10s with the 10s, and so on.

I hate BF calculators on scales, total BS.
Good luck with the diet, I hope Sergeant Cal keeps you to it.

People who leave the gym a mess are self-centered and unbelievably rude… and most gyms do nothing to curb this behavior amongst their members.

Cal, is the pain behind the knee medial or lateral?

Hope the diet goes well.

Cal, your writing always entertains me. First, that meal. OH MY GOD! If ever I’m over your way, I would definitely go there.

I have the Princess Kimba/Sgt. Kimba conversation in my head all the time. And you are so right, that a nagging injury or “not quite right” feeling makes that whole thing much more problematic. My knee is in the category of doesn’t feel right, but it doesn’t kill me either. So damn annoying.

As for the diet, are you going to do the tuna fish thing again, or do you have something else planned?

Totally with you on those that don’t unload the bars. I’m like Nikki, though; I like to make sure everything gets put in the proper spot! Good luck with the diet, but I wouldn’t be too upset if you have definition in your back like that!!

It’s not exactly a pain - more of a feeling of wrongness. It’s behind the knee (rather than behind the kneecap) and if I prod around it is to the right of centre, but it’s not the two big cords I can feel there, it is deeper. I’m not entirely sure it isn’t the calf rather than the biceps femoris. Sorry to be so vague but the feeling is pretty vague in itself.
