Yeah it sucks. I went for two years without a cold (well, a few tried to start, but my body killed them before they got going) then got one at the beginning of September, and now this one. Usually they go within a week…this one has been going for 10 days now. The whole left side of my face hurts - seems to be a sinus infection now. Joy.
I did have ART today, though. (Nicole kept me plied with tissues to mop up my ever dripping nose). Neck is still as hell still (she gave it a good few cracks - she’s also a chiro) and right TFL and left glute medius were painful as ever, but shoulders were better, probably because they’ve done fuck all this week, lol.
I am away next weekend so I really hope to get to the gym tomorrow, as it’ll be my last chance for a week, but if my body says no I will respect it.
I finally got my arse to the gym. There was quite a lot of “Should I? Shouldn’t I?” going on but ultimately I figured I needed to unglue my arse from the chair and just go.
I did a fairly low key workout:
Superset: Millies/Back Squat
2 x bar x 10/10
25kg x 10/10
30kg x 10/10
I really struggled on that 30kg set of millies, but I guess I have an excuse this time around.
Then on to back squat only:
2 x 40kg x 5
Jesus Christ these were hard. 40kg (88lbs) is a pittance, really, but I struggled with it. I didn’t feel too good squatting, to be honest.
Went for a lie down. Or bench press, as it’s otherwise known.
Bar x 10
30kg x 10
40kg x 10
2 x 50kg x 5
The 50kg set didn’t feel quite right but I’m definitely out of practise on this lift due to all the shoulder problems.
Deadlift:
Bar x 10
3 x 60kg x 5
Taking it fairly easy as bending forward makes all the snot rush into my nose. Urgh.
Did a bit of stretching and left it there. I felt better for having exercised, I’ll admit.
Weight is still 11 st 2 (156) but to be honest I’ve not been dieting as such, even if I have been eating less shit. I don’t look too bad at this weightm mind you - just a bit soft.
A “lie down” a/k/a bench press. That made me laugh!
88 lbs. for squat is a pittance and I’m struggling just as hard with that pittance. Perhaps for some of us, the struggle is the way to be stronger and there really is no prize at the end.
Actually I think my nose has finally stopped running so perhaps the exercise helped (I’ll know tomorrow when I’m back at school). My ART/chiro, Nicole, also adjusted my neck yesterday and said freeing up C1 can help sinus pain. I also steamed my head using Olbas Oil (don’t know if you have that stateside - it’s a blend of menthol, eucalyptus and other stuff designed to clear your nose). Anyway, I feel markedly better than yesterday.
Kimba - yeah it sucks to struggle with 88lbs but bear in mind you are 110lbs or thereabouts, whereas I am 156lbs. Bit of a difference.
Training always helps me get over a cold. That and Mucinex. And OJ. Eh, OJ is only an excuse for me to drink it. Mucinex and training work wonders alone.
Whew, so a moderately stressful day today. First I had the headmistress in to one of my lessons to evaluate it (I don’t know what she thought of it - I have a follow up meeting in the future) and then netball club where I had to announce the team for a match against another school next week. (My first match against another school, for the record). Lots of upset from the girls who didn’t get picked.
Anyway, I’m also rather excited because I have always wanted to go to the Fat Duck, Heston Blumenthal’s renowned restaurant (Google him - he’s a very experimental chef) and I got invited by my friend Fraser, who is celebrating the anniversary of his civil partnership. Of course I have to pay my own share and it will cost an arm and a leg, but it’s on my bucket list so I’m bloody well going to go! It’ll be later this month and I can’t wait.
No training this weekend as I’m visiting my godparents (first time for, oh, must be more than 20 years since I’ve seen them) but I’m intending to hit the gym Monday and hopefully get in a run at some point too.
HAHAH! “A lie down” Freaking hilarious. And nice DLing! Esp considering you’re coming off a cold.
How fun re: the netball match. You’ve really taking to be a PE teacher huh? This is so cool! I’ve always love all my coaches, even the shitty ones - so this is all very cool to me.
You lucky bitch! I’d totally pay an arm and a leg for some seriously good and posh food. So worth it! And yes, details are mandatory!! Have fun
I had a nice weekend visiting my godmother (and husband - who isn’t my godfather although I think of him as such) and her daughter who I used to go riding with when I was a kid. Been 20 years since I saw them all and they’re doing well. They live in an amazing period house in Cambridgeshire and it was quite comforting to see that very little had changed. I was well fed - quite a bit of comfort food - so I didn’t get on the scales when I went to the gym today.
Cold is still not completely gone but it’s on its last legs. I feel more or less OK but there’s still a bit of congestion and I expect my energy levels are a bit lower than normal. Anyway, I knocked out the following workout:
Superset: Millies and Squats
Bar x 10/10
25kg x 10/10
30kg x 9/10 (wasn’t happy about losing a rep on the press but I let the bar come a bit too low on the pervious rep and just lost it)
35kg x 3/10
then moved on to Box Squats:
3 x 40kg x 8
Slightly better than last time. The squat feels quite comfortable but I’m still concerned about what my back is doing. I need to bust out the digital camera again.
Bench Press:
Bar x 20
30kg x 10
40kg x 10
50kg x 7
Right shoulder isn’t quite right so I didn’t push it further.
Body rows
---------- (done on Smith machine)
8, 6, 5
Just ran out of gas.
After that did some hypers and worked my bridge. Bridge is getting a lot better. Would have liked to have practised more gymnastics but the mats were too busy, so I called it a day.
Glad to hear your box squats are feeling good. Did you see the recent Ripptoe article on setting the lumbar curve? It has helped things click a bit for me (oh, yes, that is what I’m supposed to be doing with my butt, lol). My hip flexors are having some trouble adjusting (stretching out), but that article really helped me have a better sense of what I was supposed to be doing…
Never head of the Fat Duck, but looking forward to your report

We’re going for the tasting menu. I’m sure Frenchy will enjoy the wine list, too. Personally, I’m terrified about the cost but as I said, once in a lifetime, bucket list stuff.
Today is what you’d call a glorious day - clear blue skies but not cold. I had already decided today would be a running day but the weather only reinforced my decision. Sciatica was quite noticeable even as I started. It had niggled a bit at the weekend - it might have been because I went stomping through some marshy woodlands in my godfather’s too big wellington boots (godmother’s and daughter’s wellies were too small for my large plates) and had to scramble across a fair few tree trunks and other obstacles. It could also have been the inordinate amount of sitting and lack of mobility work that went on when I was sick. Either way, it sucked.
Initially I thought I would do a conservative three miles, but despite the glute pain, I realised I had quite a bit of energy and ended up doing about 7.5 miles. I’m not sure on the time as I didn’t take my watch, but I was able to push myself towards the end.
Just for the hell of it I also did 30 swings with my 16kg kettlebell while I was running the bath. I suspect my bum will be angry tomorrow.
