Cal's Big Log II: The Revenge

Snot is one of the most disgusting things that comes out of our bodies. Bleghh. I hope you feel better. Looks like a good workout nonetheless. It’s very cool that you’re finding your way back to squatting. And even when I’m not sick, I’m only capable of really going hard with my training every other week. Recovery demands are a bitch. But the push hard one week, go easy the next week also helps me keep my head in the game. Intensity is a hard state to maintain.

Sadly the cold has come out - my throat is still sore but now I’m a bit snotty and sneezing a lot. When I get colds my skin always feels tender too, and I’m shivery and achey. I am rather sad because I’ve had to cancel my gymnastics class. I might have been able to tough it out but I wouldn’t have enjoyed it and I would have spread the virus to everyone there, which just isn’t fair. So I’ve stayed in.

My friend who teaches drama the school I work at has also come down with it so it’s obviously another nasty lurgy the children have infected us with. They are little typhoid marys, every one!

 way to work on the headstands! It took me about a week of trying every day to get it. Just lace your fingers and put them over your head. Get on your knees and then roll onto your forearms so you have a tripod of forearms and head. Practice up against the wall. I usually ‘unfold’ myself. Bringing my knees in and then stretching my legs out. I like doing this at the end of the work out because it’s a challenge for stabilizing core muscles after lifting and rowing. And it looks cool. I also like doing ‘bridges’ - you know, back bends to stretch the abs. Have fun  and get better soon !

Ah I haven’t had much luck with the yoga-style headstand - I don’t know if it’s because my arms are proportionally short, but I can’t seem to get my weight on my forearms, it’s all on my head. But the regular headstand I can do pretty consistantly now. It’s the handstands I haven’t quite got yet - working on that, but it’s a whole other ballgame to the headstand.

Still feeling like shit. Any kind of workout looks doubtful for the next couple of days. Buggeration.

Being sick sucks SO MUCH. At this point, rest is probably the very best thing.

I think doing box squats is an excellent training tool. High or not, doesn’t matter. The practice of sitting back and pushing with your hips out of the hole is extraordinarily worth it.

Feel better soon.

i feel ya on being in a petri dish by working with kids! no fun when they get ya sick. hope ya feel better.

your fortitude with training…despite a lot of issues with noncompliant body parts is seriously inspiring!

Ugh I was feeling poor last week, I am sorry that really sucks or blows depending on whether you have a kleenex! Hope you get to being better real soon!

Yeah, I’m doing a lot of blowing right now, and not the good kind.
I am a little concerned about work, since I work Weds - Fri, and it’s not exactly a sedentary job. If all I had to do was sit in an office, it wouldn’t be so bad, but I have to teach a bunch of kids gymnastics, keep order (never easy when I feel well and have full use of my voice) and demonstrate stuff. Hrrm.

Cal, you dirty whore, feel better. Stay home from school tomorrow. You must get some sick leave?

Sick leave? We don’t get that. In Britain, if we get really sick we phone in and say so. Thing with school is, it’s a massive inconvenience if a teacher is sick because the rest have to cover for them. So I’m going in.

Sorry to hear you are sick. Hard not to get random colds etc when teaching. I gotta work on my squat, too. Be interested to hear how the box works out for you. Hope you feel better soon.

Are you feeling better yet?

Ha you and your blowing jokes.

I’m super sorry you’re sick, how are you feeling? Haven’t heard from you in a couple days ;(

X2! you dirty bird

Are you feeling better?

Thanks for the well wishes. I’ve been feeling too crappy to train, although I did go to school as usual. I think this thing is a cold rather than 'flu, but it’s an ugly one. I am still full of snot. Add to that Flo’s appearance yesterday, and I’ve been transformed into a miserable bag of unpleasant bodily fluids. I was hoping to feel well enough to lift yesterday, but still didn’t feel up to it, so I decided I would rest and hope I had enough energy for gymnastics today.

And yes, I did go to gymnastics. I found it quite tough going but that’s to be expected. My moves are all getting better though - my cartwheel has a puncture but is not quite as spastic as previously, and my bridge isn’t too bad at all now. Still don’t have the shoulder and spinal mobility to straighten my arms, but it’s not so bad.

At the end of the class, the instructor wanted to see us all do a forward roll, “small” handstand (ie, feet off the floor - not a full one if you couldn’t), bridge and cartwheel. When I kicked up into the handstand I did it so well I went vertical, surprised myself and promptly fell over with a big crash. Someone might as well have yelled timber. Still, she did say it was the best handstand she’d seen me do. Progress?

I have a headache now so just chilling back at home. Doing inverted moves with a head full of snot isn’t great but after more than a week off, I really needed to go out and move.

I’m hoping to lift tomorrow - in any case I have ART in the afternoon. Guess Nicole will have to work on my lev scap again.

You’re alive! But still sick…sorry. Sounds look good news on the gymnastics front.

ish - feel better soon Cal.

you just described my weekend to a T! lol i feel your pain. hope you dry up in no time.

Good for you getting to vertical on a handstand! I am very impressed. Heal up soon.

Great job in gymnastics… despite not feeling tip-top.
Sick and TOM?.. not very nice of your body to do to you.
