Hmn… so I should be working my way up to x20 reps on my shoulder circuit? damn.
pr!!! spastic cartwheels
best kind.
FFS, I am sick again. Started with scratchy throat and catarrgh yesterday. Half of the nursery kids are out sick - I blame them. I must have the worst immune system in the world. It’s like, the second I make a little progress in the gym, bam, I get hit with something. Going to need a lot of meds to get me through today.
Hey Cal, do you drink whey protein shakes? I used to get sick about every three months (since I can remember, I would regularly get sick). The first year after I start consuming protein shakes, I didn’t get sick once. I was sick when my boyfriend left the country, and now that he’s back and I’m also drinking those shakes regularly again, I haven’t been sick once in the last 6 months.
I looked it up and it turns out that whey protein increases your white blood cell count. A shake a day keeps the doctor away ![]()
wow, sorry to hear that…can you take something like ‘airborne’? Its this otc stuff full of vitamins that was made up by a teacher who was tired of always getting sick. It dissolves in water like alkaseltzer.
Your MP is stellar, girl! Nice work on that.
And nice hang cleans!! Damn I love those. They’re good for so many things!
Sick again?! Faaaaaak! My mom works with kids, she’s always sick too…ugh! Feel better, mama!
Oleena - yes I’m already a big whey user.
RE: Airborne - it is not widely available here. You can get it via Amazon but it’s prohibitively expensive. I take 1g fizzy vit C every morning (usually with glutamine but I’ve run out of glutamine for the moment) and I take ZMA before bed so I’m well covered as far as immune supplements go. But I’m surrounded by snotty children.
Geez louise! Sorry to hear you’re sick again. You’d think being around kids so much eventually you’d build up a tolerance to all them kid snot germs.
Feel better soon!
Is there any way you can start disinfecting them in some way? Make them shower, wash hands? It is a gym class, showers are to be expected.
No showers at my school - it’s very small. But we have antibac gel in all the classrooms.
ah fuck me.
That there is why I would never teach.
stay strong Cal.
This winter has sucked. Time for spring and no more sickness! If you want me to send you any cold supps from the States, PM me.
Thanks Kimba. I’m coming to the US in June so I’ll stock up on what I can get there (including Mitchum unscented gel deodorant - can’t get that here and I love it).
Yesterday was last day of school for a week (well, excluding the after school club I do on Monday - that school has a different half term holiday to the one where I work) and fortunately yesterday was a training day because I was too sick to spend the day on my feet, shouting at kids.
Felt pretty horrible this morning too but I made myself go the gym. It wasn’t like the first cold where the symptoms were mostly sore throat and snot and I actually felt better for training - I am more “ill” today and I just don’t feel good. But I needed to train. I didn’t do anything too stressful (ie, squats, deadlifts, explosive movements, gymnastics - even my stretching was pretty mild) but I did push a few weights around. I took fairly long breaks between sets to recover.
Warm-up was the usual hypers, reverse hypers, clams, body bar shoulder stuff.
Military Press:
Bar x 10
25kg x 10
30kg x 10
5 x 32.5kg x 6
Superset: T-Bar Rows/Push-ups
20kg x 15/15
25kg x 10/12
Just two superset. Really, I just did this while I was waiting for some retard to finish his quarter bench presses.
Bench Press:
Bar x 10
30kg x 10
40kg x 10
45kg x 10
50kg x 8 (+1)
52.5kg x 5
Close Grip Pulldowns:
50kg x 10
55kg x 8
Wasn’t really feeling these today but I think that’s partly down to the sickness and partly down to the fact I had to use the smooth V-handle rather than the one with the texture (what’s this called? Gnurling?) on it, so it was hard to keep hold of the bar.
Straight Arm Pulldowns:
20kg x 15
25kg x 12
30kg x 10
Incline treadmill walking: 15 mins (between 5 and 6% incline and 5 and 6kph).
Although we still use miles in this country, a lot of gym equipment is in kilometers, which is annoying. I know 6kph is about 4mph.
I would have gone longer but it bothers my achilles. That thing is fucking me off. I guess the only cardio that wouldn’t bother it is swimming or possibly spin, I don’t know. And I find both boring.
I’m going to take it easy for the rest of the day and hope that I feel up to doing circuits tomorrow, because I enjoy that class and get a lot out of it.
what about bike sprints? I’m going to be adding those. Less time spent on=less boring.
and what about a regular mountain or road bike?
I can’t ride a bike. I’m not joking. Growing up dyspraxic, it wasn’t something I was able to master. A childhood friend tried to teach me and I ended up in a rose bush, cut to ribbons. After that I never tried again.
I expect I could probably learn now (considering I’ve learned some basic gymnastics and I can catch reasonably well whereas as a kid I couldn’t catch at all) but I don’t know anyone with a bike, and I’m not willing to spend hundreds of pounds on something I might not be able to use. I’m also aware of the fact that cycling in London is dangerous - a week doesn’t go past without some horror story in the papers about a cyclist being crushed by a lorry.
Bike sprints could work - I like rower sprints too, (well, like is not quite right - I find them effective and satisfying but it’s also painful and I need to be in the right frame of mind, unlike running sprints). But obviously not when I’m sick. Needed something more gentle today.
Got my circuits in today, despite feeling crappy. I did feel better after, as is often the case. Now if only I could lose the weight. I may be a bit bloated at the moment - Flo still hasn’t arrived. It’s actually 37 days since the start of my last period. However, seeing as that one lasted 15 days, it’s pretty clear my cycles are not normal at the moment.
Back when I turned 40 my cycles got very weird and my immune system went to hell - it seems to be happening again. I’m not unduly concerned because I’m coming up on 45 this year and menopause can’t be too many years hence. This sort of nonsense is likely all part of that. Aside from the colds, I feel OK, so as long as that remains the case I’m not going to panic.
Cal: I think it is normal to get hit by a lot of cold bugs when you first start working with kids, but you have really had it going on this year. Take care of yourself!
Good on you for training while feeling crappy. Listening to your body is important, but sometimes the mental release of training is worth a bit of temporary pain. That’s what I told myself today, anyway.

Right on, it’s a weird balance to find, but awesome when you can.

Way to soldier. I like neber go to the gym when I’m sick.
Please tell me your coaster vacation is coming to Santa Clara great America?
